Thank you for your advice! I found all my so called "fashion" jewelry finally ended up thrift stores. I could have something nice and long-lasting if I hadn't bought all these stuff. :thinkin:
^yes, I can remember going through that too. at least you've learned early, right? make sure you get your jewelry on sale or for the absolute best price you can. most of us are suggesting classic pieces that you will wear throughout your entire life, so if you have to wait for a really great sale it doesn't matter in the long term.

I love this list, although since I'm not much of a pearl person I'd probably opt for a classic bracelet instead.
^thanks! I was never really a pearl person either, but I sure have become one now. I'm surprised at how often I reach for my classic pearl studs.

For me, I would say:

1. Diamond engagement ring
2. Wedding band
3. Nice watch
4. Love bracelet
5. A Right hand ring you love
6. An everyday necklace that is meaningful to you

Maybe "must have" isn't what we all really mean. Most of what everyone is suggesting is the "classic" staples. Jewelry that will never go out of style. Diamond studs, tennis bracelet, diamond solitaire pendant is just like a t-shirt and jeans. CLASSIC !!! Jewelry that can be handed down for generations to come and your grandchildren wouldn't be saying, omg what was my grandma on???!!!
My best friend who owns the best pieces from all the friends I know does not wear classic jewellery. Today she had a small black/white/gold water snail dangling around her neck, it matched the black/white-stripe-shirt and the black/white blazer perfectly.

I guess it takes some courage to step aside the classic route and choose the own, personal route.

Speaking about the classics: my mum wears all her jewellery, by the time she dies I will be (hopefully) 60 years old, I don't want to wait so long so what's the use of buying to hand it down. I guess I will also wear my jewellery until I die.
And if the kids or grandkids don't appreciate it, they can carry it to the pawnshop. I would not care, because by then I will be gone.
To point it out in a quite extreme way: to me it seems co-dependet to buy jewellery my kids or grandkids would like to inherit.

I switched to fine jewellery and left the costume jewellery, because I would not want to hand down expensive costume jewellery. But as long as it's gold and diamonds, they should be fine with any piece!

My grandmum had red-gold rose-shaped jewellery, fashionable in the 1950's but not today. Still she lives through those pieces. Would I sense her spirit in a 6-prong-setting diamond-pendant? Dunno.

OP, nice thread!!

I remember wearing a pearl-necklace at a company-anniversary-party and a co-worker said "You plus pearls - that's pure revolution!" Classics just don't work for everyone.

Speaking of watches - Omega are a fine alternative to Rolex. :graucho:

I agree! The pieces should be timeless and classic but that represent you at the same time. I have the RG cartier Love bracelet and matching ring. I wear those every day along with either my pearl or diamond studs and my Michael Kors watch. To me the bracelet and ring are classic and they go with everything, and I prefer them over a tennis bracelet, but both are classic. It is really up to you but the lists on here so far are pretty on point in terms of suggesting jewelry that will not go out of style! Good luck with your investements!!

no one in this thread (including me) has said that classics work for everyone, we have given our opinions about what we consider to be the 5 "must have" pieces that we own. if you have a different opinion, that's wonderful...you're welcome to take the OP's invitation & state it in this thread as you already have more than once.

Hi ladies,

I'm turning 25 this year. And I realize I need to save up for some nice things :D. I don't really have investment pieces so far. I want to hear your opinions what are 5 must-have pieces in your jewelry box? It could be any, necklace, bracelet..

Thanks!!!:p

I think I understand this question as what are the pieces that would form the basis for a good collection. Sort of the jewelry equivalent of wardrobe staples like a fitted blazer or a great dark jean. Stuff that maybe everyone else has and is not really "unique", but would play off and support all the other pieces you own.

I think I'm mostly repeating other posts =)
1. Gemstone ring of the best quality you can afford. (I prefer a statement or cocktail style ring)
2. Pearl studs (never thought I was a pearl girl, but they work with everything for me)
3. Diamond earrings (I'm still working on that)
4. Watch (I prefer one that transitions well from day to evening wear and is a bit sporty)
5. Tennis bracelet

5 Must-Have Pieces

1) A pair of earrings you don't want to take out
2) A bracelet or watch that makes you smile every time you catch a glimpse of your wrist. (alternative, a ring)
3) A simple necklace which says "Timeless"
4) A simple necklace which says "I have fun"
5) A piece of fabulous jewelry which will catch every eye.
