Wallet - should you buy high-end or low end?

I have all three: high-end Celine wallet, Coach wallet (middle) and a cheap $30 Kenneth Cole wallet... All of them are leather BTW. I use any of them when the mood strikes me. Pick a wallet for its design and looks. Ultimately you're the one using it and it should make you happy!

I think the quality of the wallet is the most important feature and then appearance and unfortunately mid to high end is usually where the quality is. I tend to prefer to go for a high end classic ones that can be enjoyed for years. I built have quite a collection of these now. By purchasing them one by one over the years and they are all different (LV, Gucci, Chanel, saving for an Hermes now) and adore them all for different reasons. I also concur that my LV wallets have stood the test of time, but if it is true what other forum members are saying about their downward spiral regarding quality and craftsmanship, I will not be buying those in the future. I have had great luck with a 6 year old LV wallet made in Spain and amazing luck with key/card/valet, I believe it is a LV cles that I have had 2 of over the past 20 years and my last purchase was the beginning of this year while they were still being made and declared to be made in France and Spain and I was still pleased with the quality and craftsmanship. So, based on my experience I still recommend high end brands but find out what their services are and what you can expect AFTER the sale (before you buy) and that should give you insight into their quality and how they stand behind their brand's craftsmanship.

But take it with a grain of salt because my mantra is buy quality as is ALWAYS pays you back.

I have a blueberry Kate Spade wallet that retailed for around $200 and I got for $60. Well worth it. I have to open my wallet a minimum of 5 times a day and it doesn't always get good treatment. But it still looks so good even with all my abuse.

depends. If you are the type that gets tired of your wallets easily and want to switch to a new one then buying mid range will suit your needs better. Lasts long enough to get your use out of it and just long enough so you have an excuse to buy a new one that you aren't bored with.

If you are the type that doesn't care and won't switch out your wallet too much then a high end one will do too. But sometimes non high end ones have super cute wallets like the hello kitty and pikachu wallets. OMG cuteness.

I never used to bother so much with wallets - until I bought a beautiful Gucci. Then I really appreciated the difference.

However, I do think there are very good quality wallets out there, without having to go mainstream designer name

I've had lower end wallets before and to be honest the quality was also low end. Then I switched to Prada Saffiano wallet and 4 years down the road the quality has held up well. You might wanna get a high end wallet but on sale season or from cheaper website such as Yoox, that way the quality justifies the price.

High end. My first wallet cost around 50€ and a leather piece was soon sticking out when it wasn't supposed to. I was so glad when I finally got my first LV wallet, I've used it everyday for 5 years and it still looks new with minor wear on the corners. I switched to Prada Saffiano for 1 and a half years and it held up well too (though the LV quality is better), just switched back to the LV since I prefer the smaller dimensions nowadays

I say both, which ever suits your needs. Folding or zippered, enough slots for various information papers, cards and cash. Gucci has nice wallets i admit, Rebecca Minkoff has nice ones, Kipling, and Fossil.

Personally I have one from rebecca and two from kipling and fossil respectively.

I have what I would consider a mid-range wallet, my current one is MbMJ. I never switch them out so I made sure I chose one that is sturdy enough to withstand me getting in and out of it several times a day (too often!) but that I can toss in my purse without worrying about scuffs, etc. My wallet's zipper actually broke within about 6 months of use (actually, the strip of leather that holds the end of the zipper down broke loose...hard to explain) but I was able to glue it down well enough to be satisfied. Next time I buy a wallet I will probably go with something other than MbMJ just to avoid the zipper issue, but I wouldn't spend more than $250 or so on a wallet- I'd rather save my money for the bag itself :smile1:

high end because they will outlast a cheap one, besides the amount of times you'd have to replace a cheap one would get you at least a medium quality one time that will last years.

I have to disagree with you. There are high end wallets that are very durable and there are some that are more delicate. I fell in love with a Prada deerskin wallet. It felt so nice and looked so beautiful that I chose it over the saffiano leather which wears like iron. I don't regret it but after a couple of years it is showing wear. My wallet before this one was a Michael Kors. It's not as beautiful but it held up better.

OP, I'd advise you to get what you want but it's not necessary to pay hundreds of dollars to get something that will hold up.
