Me and dh spent eur 2500 on silks and accessories at the Paris serves store and still no birkin. They didn't even bother to check. I spent eur 1540 on a bearn Wallet at fsh and after much asking, the SA went to check for a birkin and I got one.
no hard and fast rule I feel. More of which SA you meet and persistency.
i was told that to get on a SO for B/K bag, you need to spend $10K+ at the store. Can anyone else confirm this?

it really depends on the SA you ask and the manager on duty at the time. i have friends who didn't have to buy ANYTHING and still got a SO. i for one haven't been so lucky. however, for each of my 3 visits to paris i have been able to get a kelly. my most recent visit to paris was in late july... i went to the fauborg shop 3 days in a row (i was staying at the sofitel which is 2 min walk). at times i would see these regular clients picking up B and K but each time i asked, the sales said it was a SO and there were no stock. finally on my last day in paris, a shipment arrived ! and again i got another kelly. there were birkins too! as i am still undecided on the size of birkin i want i passed and went for the 35cm kelly (good size).

You have to ask to the bag dept. If you are shopping in other depts, they will not know if there are bags available.
Every time I went to FSH, I went strait to the bag area and asked for Birkin or Kelly and they were checking on their computer telling me what they had on the back (if there were bags available). No need to buy other stuff. As long as I know, in FSH they really don't care if you buy something different from a Birkin.

I was lucky most of the time.
I usually do like you. I go to the bag dpt first thing
. If they don't look is because they know there's nothing in the back (probably they just checked).If things didn't change recentrly, to ask for a Birkin straight off is taboo in most of the boutiques, but not in FSH.
Angelika summed up the Paris situation very nicely. Yes, September is "rentree" and although the weather has been horrible here, even I am not returning home to Paris until 1 September. The Hermes workshopin Pantin has been closed almost the entire month of August and thus actual in store stock is low.
However, Hermes is a "special" brand and "problem" for people who have little or no patience! And in this "specialness" the coveted bags that are actually in the stockroom neatly lying in their sleepers with the boxes stacked by size, awaiting a French vendeuse to decide if she or he wants to show it to you. And remember also that every SA has her own personal customer list and will be calling each of them to tell them what is in stock and possible to buy right now or tomorrow. I received such a phone call yesterday and happily gave my credit card over the phone---but I was very very flexible on colour and leather but very strict on size!
So enjoy Paris in September--the weather is beautiful, the fashion excitement is in the air and the tents are up starting 3 September!

wouldnt bother with Amsterdam unless you actually live there ,I tried many times with no luck.
I was in London & Paris this past July 21-30. I had gone to 2 Hermes stores in London (no Kellys & only 1 Birkin Croc print) & all 3 stores in Paris. I went to 24 FSH twice on a Wed. 1st when they opened the 2nd around 2:30, I made it a point to look for the same SA who would tell me, "none available, but come back tomorrow around 3pm". I went there the next day around 2:30ish and it was like Christmas! Birkins & Kelly bags being shown. The SA who helped us the day before was busy so we asked another if there were any Birkins. Her response was, "No we don't have any in stock" didn't even bother to look in the computer or even pretend she was checking stock. We asked what all the other customers were looking at she said, "they are trying out the sizes". At that point we realized she didn't want to help us so we asked another SA. His response, "I will go to the back & check". He comes back saying as if it were top secret there was 1 birkin in stock which he could only show me in private. I truly lucked out cause it was the one I wanted.
You will find your bag at 24 FSH you just have to be there around the time of delivery, be persistent and make sure you find a helpful SA.

So true! That's exactly what I did and got a Birkin my 2nd day going from one SA to another in the same day/same store..
