So is this what a Shoulder Sac with a single rivet looks like? I am glad the one I have has two! The way I load it up!

That rivet isn't in the center, as it was on this bag:

(Completed listing; watch out for redirect.)
It looks like a design flaw that they fixed later by putting 2 rivets there.

Those were replaced. They aren't the kind Coach used. When they used the single rivet, it was in the middle, in the center of seam, like the listing Catbird9 linked too. The seam ended up ripping. I had one like that and when I replaced the rivet, I put it off-center.

Hi ladies, I asked this on FB and have not had a reply. What was the very first Coach bag that was designed after Lillian Cahn's mother's paper bags? Is that the 9170? About 10" wide, 3 deep and 8 high.

I believe that the correct answer to your question was the "Shopping Bag Tote" series from the early-to-mid 1960s which came in three sizes (that I know of): Dinky Shopping Bag Tote (8-1/2"w x 8"h x 5"d), Shopping Bag Tote (8-1/2"w x 12"h x 5"d), and Large Shopping Bag Tote (12"w x 13"h x 5"d). As I recall, these bags were available in both all-leather and slubbed linen with leather trim versions. For reference, below is a very early advert that shows the tall slender Shopping Bag Tote style:

The style #9170 Classic Pouch was introduced in 1971 during the time when many of what would become iconic COACH designs first appeared and BC's influence at COACH seemed to be waning. And yes, there were subsequent advert campaigns that identified the #9170 as "the original COACH bag," though obviously that is hyperbole.

As for the story behind who to attribute the design of this early series of bag, I suspect that there's both myth and fact. Given that the earliest versions (identified with a white fabric tag with gold lettering) were labeled "A BONNIE CASHIN DESIGN, Cashin-Carry for COACH," followed by later releases that were identified with both the black "Bonnie Cashin" metal tag plus the red "COACH LEATHERWARE A BONNIE CASHIN DESIGN" fabric tags, I suspect that one can probably conclude who the design credit truly belongs to insofar as I cannot believe that BC would lend her name to something she did not design. I'm inclined to believe that sales and promotion were Miles Cahn's strong suits, and if nothing else, creating a good story helps sell.
