Here's a photo of a Patricia's Legacy, a Legacy Zip, and a Stewardess:

ETA: Opps! I posted this before I saw that you had already gotten some comparison pictures, sorry. If you like shoulder bags then the strap on the stewardess is shorter. If you prefer crossbody then the Legacy Zip is a better choice.
Thank you, and to @Narnanz - really helpful! I was hoping the legacy zip might be comparable in size since I’ve been seeming some for sale in fun colors. And I love your photos, even though my wish list gets longer every time I see your bags. That white is gorgeous!

Ha ha! That's what I thought too at first. I was thinking, why is Narnanz so glad I'm chatting tonight? I could not figure it out. I felt really special for a little while but I have to put my pedestal back in the garage now I guess. Oh well.

I am so with you on the rust! Especially with fall coming up. When I was plotting purchasing my rust Courier, my eyes would glaze over as I imagined myself carrying my rust Courier while walking through the fall leaves drinking a pumpkin spice coffee while wearing a sweater and boots with special boot socks.... I am in love with that color. Of course, now that we're talking about it, prices are going to skyrocket.

ETA: could you imagine a Pony in rust?? Talk about a Holy Grail.
For me that walking through the fall leaves bag is Berkeley duffle. Something about the brown suede just clicks for me with fall.

I dream about finding a pony for $25 but it never happens. Some of my best thrift finds are Fendi $5 in Pennsylvania, Madison satchel in new condition for $18 in Florida, small hippie flap for 50 cents in Georgia, green Sonoma nubuc drawstring for $4 in Louisiana, Bonnie Cashin double kisslock for $23 in Oklahoma, Court for $2 in Nevada, Gucci for $3 in California, a Dooney zip along wallet with strap for $1 at a garage sale in California (with $1.75 inside!), Balenciaga club bag for $40 in Oregon, London Fog down coat for $1.50 in Oregon, Ferragamo for $2 locally in California, 3 Dunhill snakeskin wallets for $5 in Nevada (they retail over $800 each), Gramercy satchel for $8 in Nevada, 2007 Legacy satchel for $20 in California, Tod's tote for $10 in California, Court and Kent bags for $1.50 each in California, precreed Classic pouch for $12 in Arizona, MZ Wallace for $6 in California....
Your thrifting finds are amazing. When I was in New York city about 2 years ago, I really should go thrift shopping there but never thought about it. I did score some over two years in the past here in central Alberta Canada, but since Covid 19, NOTHING. Here is the list of mine, $25 red Saddlery, $25 black Gucci 1973 suede shoulder bag, $8 green all weather leather Dooney & Burke small satchel, $8 navy Devon, $20 black Legacy Zip (gifted to a friend), $8 red Scooter (sold it), and $17 wood carving picture of Moose by Canadian artist Kim Murray. That is all.

I compared my new to me Hermes Evelyne PM (29cm) sized bag in barenia leather to my Costa Rica Willis bag as it has the best leather of all my vintage Coach bags.

Both bags:

EE36831C-E9AF-4016-A71D-DFE8F14BA768.jpeg
For those unfamiliar with the Evelyne bag, it is a U-shaped bag, unlined, with a snap closure and, in the case of my 2003 bag but not current ones, a smallish interior slip pocket. I just found out the big H side is considered the back and the side with the snap is the front. If you want to slide your hand in without unsnapping it, it doesn’t matter what side is out, but if you need to open it to find or remove an item, having the snap towards you is awkward.

Front/Back of the Evelyne for the curious:

I compared the bags for: leather feel, leather thickness and hardware. I don’t own a Coach bag close in style to the Evelyn to do an honest comparison of the functionality of the two. What I should have done, if not feeling lazy, was dig out an NYC bag to compare handmade to handmade since H fans tout their price as the result of handcrafting. But I am still bummed about work and not up to rooting around.

Leather “finickiness”- As you can see On the above pic of the snap side, the barenia leather shows scratches easily. It is more akin to Dooney’s natural colored florentine leather where marks create patina than Coach leather which doesn’t mark up that easily. Judging them for ease of care, the Coach leather wins. The common leather used for Evelynes (clemence) is worse for care. While it doesn’t scratch easily, water can make it blister and the blisters don’t go away. Imagine a casual crossbody bag that is ruined if it gets hit by rain! The barenia is a bit easier to care for. Mine had a water mark on the bottom. Based on comments from a barenia fan and leather care guru in the H forum, I knew water was safe and used a wet white paper towel to dab at the old spot and it went from this:

Leather feel- both feel nice to touch. The barenia feels slightly velvety, but not suede like. It reminds me of Mulberry’s calf leather on their defunct Willow bags. The Glove tanned Costa Rica bag has a smooth surface that doesn’t tug at your fingers. The suede side of the Hermes bag has a finer nap to it than the Coach bag, both are preloved so it is not a matter of use. Winner: the Evelyne. I might go another way if it were another type of H leather, but the barenia just feels better to me. Very soft, very luxe, just gorgeous.

Leather thickness- they both feel the same thickness and both are very squishable. The Willis is a more structured bag so it doesn’t flop like the Evelyne, but both would “crumple” if not for how the Willis was constructed. Winner: tie.

Hardware- Willis has brushed nickel hardware that goes great with its gray color. It is cool and crisp looking. The Evelyne has gold toned hardware that is a bright shiny hue. It looks like warm sun. Judging on appearance only, while I prefer the nickel, the H clips just look better and more finely crafted; however, the Coach clips, which look utilitarian, are far easier to use. The H clips are hard to open and seem like if I am not careful, the might scratch the rings. The H clips allow the strap to turn effortlessly which is great if it twists, but it means it always seems to be twisted every time I pick up the bag. The Willis seems to twist less. Winner: draw. Depends what you want, looks or functionality.

Here are both clips:

A side note, when examining the H bag, I discovered the back side of the snap had verdigris and left a mark on the back of the pocket. So even a bag that retails for over $3000 new is plagued by the green menace. Not an issue with the nickel, but as I have other Coach bags whose brass turned, I didn’t count this as a fault against the Evelyne since the hardware was different metals and it wasn’t apples to apples. If I were comparing it to Coach brass, it looks better, but will evidently still corrode which a bag this expensive shouldn’t do.

final verdict:
I do not now, nor have I ever thought Hermes bags were worth the price they charge. At the end of the day, it is a thing to haul your junk around in. They claim the price is the handcrafting and that the bags can be repaired within reason (they basically reconstruct it If possibl) but the spa price is high and I saw a vlog of a woman who spent enough buying a second hand birkin and having it fixed, she could have bought a new one. A spa refresh, IMO, given the price they charge for a bag should be free, with charges only for major repair work.

So while, yes, I feel the Barenia Evelyne is noticeably higher quality than a vintage Coach (Keep in mind most of their bags are other leathers so the verdict might change if using one of them), the Coach isn’t that far off and I think the Coach is the better buy. You can pick up a preloved one in great condition for a reasonable price (for now anyway) vs paying more than a new Coach (or my first car) for a preloved birkin that looks like it went through a war. You can also fix up the Coach yourself and not have to fork over thousands to maybe get it fixed (fyi, Hermes tells you what they will fix when you send it in, you don’t have a say other than go ahead or not).

I bet NYC wouldn't be very good for thrifting. Too many people wanting vintage and sellers knowing it so pricing things super high. I didn't shop in NYC but in Poughkeepsie I found a black pocket purse for $20 - not a great deal.

Very interesting review.
The closest I will get to having a Birkin is my made in China dupe that I have to repair at some stage. I do own three scarves that I got for the grand total of NZ$10
Pity about verdigris on the Eve...you really would expect for that not to happen on a Hermes.
Either way...enjoy Eve.

There was a shop in Italy that used to have birkin and kelly style bags of various sizes that you coulc custom order. The quality was great. I had a kelly and 2 birkins made, but they were pricey for no name bags and, when I made a visit there during my trip to Florence, The guy there told me to go home and place an order even though reviewers said they sat there for over an hour looking through leather samples and ordering a bag in the shop. Put me off ordering more. I did get a croc kelly made by them off ebay that might be the real deal, I couldn’t get a straight answer out of them. It just looks and feels way different than my embossed fake croc bags. Recently I checked their website and saw they no longer list the Hermes style bags.

Does this really look gray or more worn-out-Black?
TYIA!

https://merc.li/mzTjXGwQb

Im definitely seeing worn out black but it doesn’t look that bad- for $35 Id take the risk to rehab and condition it to see if it makes the fading better. I have that bag- mine was in bad shape and I rehabbed it to pretty good usable condition. I will say though, its a pretty heavy bag- once you fill it up, it gets even heavier and Ive had it give me tense shoulders and a headache from wearing it crossbody. Just something to keep in mind :)

I think it would be a good candidate for a guitar style strap.
