Vintage Chanel - how do you tell if the leather has been retouched / redyed?

Is the leather soft?
If it’s my bag, I would believe the leather dye was original. The stitches is nice and clear.

If the dye was painted on by a brush, not by a spray gun, and the strokes had gone around the stitches, you will see two different color tone at the edges of the diamond blocks near the stiches.

I will show you a photo if I can still find it.

The vintage dye is plant base, it will come off some every time you wipe it or polish it.

Is it a Classic Flap? She must be beautiful!
Oh i see it could be that dye
It is soft
Is it supposed to feel different if sprayed painted
That would be helpful Thankyou!

She is truly a beauty!
When a bag has been spray painted, the texture and sheen will be changed.
Check out this thread, ‘Leather Surgeons ruined my bag?’.
You will find photos of ‘before and after’ on a redyed bag. It’s sad!

Sorry, Mebagaholic, I would have to take back my previous comment, ’If it’s my bag, I would believe the leather was original’.

Please don’t be alarmed, I’ve realized I have to be cautious of what I say. What I post out will stay on this thread forever, Haha!

Honestly, without seeing and handling your bag in person, I can‘t guarantee 100% that she hasn’t been redyed. I can only say, from the images, I can not find any evidence of your bag being re-dyed, especially by a spray gun.

Some leather dye is not that heavy, it won’t leave much residue on the stitches and the pierces. One layer of it on the leather can hardly be visible, especially on photos.

Thinking back in Sept 2020 on this thread, I had mistake once, I thought that beige color bag was in original leather, yet phish fan said her bag was re-dyed. Then days later, I enlarged her photos, I found traces of evidence, the bag was re-dyed.

Therefore, I’m showing you photos to tell you what to look for with the best of my knowledge.

If you go back to see phishfan’s post on page 2 of this thread. Look closely on the second photo posted. Do you see traces of paint residue on the stitches close to the CC logo?
Examine the stitching pierces, they’re not the same in size. Some are smaller, covered with paint residue.

Attached is a photo of a professionally done re-colored Reissue from the Restory website, https://www.the-restory.com/2018-4-7-re-colouring-a-chanel-bjpy5/.

Look into this photo in detail, do you see paint residue on the stitching pierces too? I wonder if they would clean up the stitching pearces before shipping back to the owner since those stitches are bigger in this bag.

According to the description on the website, that leather has been put on three layers of paint. When leather is covered with thicker layer of paint, it’s very easy to tell it has been repainted.

What has made you suspect your bag had been re-dyed in the beginning?

Thankyou for this detail i will check it out too.
My bag is brown classic flap apparently if that helps
I sent you a private conversation as well ☺

I recently purchased this vintage lambskin and was advised it was original condition but I can’t tell if it’s been retouched all over or in some areas (particularly the edge stitching). I rubbed a bit of toilet paper on the colour and there was residue - is this normal of original vintage lambskin leather ? Or only happens if a bag has been retouched? I would really appreciate your opinion as I’m going crazy ! A1C705ED-EE0D-4A70-9008-71E92CA27BFA.jpeg

My last CF purchase looks very close to yours.
I have that brown stroke showing on the very edge of the back packet.

Because after a layer of leather polish (I use Saphir Renovateur mink oil base cream), the leather is soft and nice, i really can’t tell for sure if this bag has been redyed. Therefore, I have decided to keep the bag.

I just think if she has been redyed and can be restored to this beautiful condition to my standard, I don’t mind keeping and treasuring her.

Also, because I have purchased a total of 17 Vintage Chanel bags, I understand and accept some restorations are necessary. As long as it’s done well, it’s okay by me.

It’s all up to you. If it bothers you, I would return it.

Where did you get your bag? May I ask?

you can Direct Message me if you want.

What toilet paper wet when you wiped on the leather? Wet cloths and wet anything will take some color off vintage lamb skin. All my lambskin bleed when wipe with leather conditioner, expect for one or two.

I know for sure my one bag has a special coating on it, so leather doesn’t bleed when contacted by moisture wipes.

It was just a dry toilet paper, no moisture or wet paper. I just rubbed on it a bit and colour has transferred. See photo. image.jpg

I bought it from a very reputable online store. I can’t seem to find the direct msg option lol if you can DM me that’s be great.
I won’t name them here in public. That being said they’ve got a large following and are a legit business. Was told it’s original condition. Even if the corners are touched I’m fine with it. My concern was if the entire bag was retouched since the colour came off on the paper. I was advised by them that can happen with vintage as leather is dyed after manufactured. They won’t take it back.
I don’t have a lot of experience with Lambskin as I mostly have caviar so I’m finding hard to know exactly how it should feel. It feels soft to the touch now so I think it’s fine but I don’tknow if I’ll ever know. Now I’m having another concern as I’m waiting for the zeko authorisation as some of the quilting doesn’t line Up - I read with vintage it’s not always perfect but this pic below concerned me.
Any thought on this ?! Much appreciated. image.jpg

I don’t think this bag has been redyed because the thread/stitches are still clean, and stitch holes are not covered with dye residue.
Also, the fine grains on the leather can still be seen.

This bag still has a sheen on it too. Very pretty.

I usually use French made mink oil base Saphir Renovateur cream on all my vintage Chanel bags.
Apply, let dry and puffer. It has given my bags a layer of protection and long lasting shine. Hope this help.

Hi Mimi
In another thread you mentioned the same Product Saphir Renovateur but with different pictures. I’m wondering which one is the better one or there is any difference between 2 products. Just want to confirm before I order it. Thank you.

I have ordered the $24 one first, then Amazon showed up this cheaper/smaller version ($12).

Because the big jar dries up on the bottom since I couldn’t finish it that fast, I decided to try the little jar on my second order.

From my personal experience, I think both are the same. I would order the $12 if you’re not doing a big job or just want to try out.

A little go a long way.

(I’ll write more about it in an hour. )

Thanks so much. It’s much clearer now. I actually researched on them abit while waiting for you and saw lots of good reviews

I feel this is the best leather cream I have ever used, because the moisture and the shine last a long time.

Mink oil hydrates well and wax locks in the hydration.

If the leather is older and dry, apply twice, or three times. Afterwards, you’ll notice the sheen will stay on and on.

Most important thing is to apply a THIN layer at a time, wait until the the stickiness is completely gone, then lightly buffer with soft cotton or the wool cloth included in the Saphir Renovateur package.

Depending on the humidity in your environment, I sometimes wait for an hour or the next day, before buffering. I live in southern Arizona, weather is dry most of the time. During monsoon season, I have to wait longer for the cream to dry.

When Saphir Renovateur is completely dry, buffering is so easy, you can even use your figure to lightly rub the top lever of wax off. Sometimes, the wax will fall of by itself, leaving the leather nice and shiny without any buffering.

You may touch to feel the leather, when it’s ready, there is no more stickiness.

Let me know your result. Hope to get to see your bag too.
