I don't understand how people don't have a problem with this...

These pictures are child pornography. It is disgusting and illegal. The fact that so many people ogling the pictures are more upset about her public hair than the fact that she is a naked minor is very disturbing to me.

She may be 18 now, but was a legal minor, a CHILD, when these pictures were taken. She is famous for being a CHILD star on a CHILDREN's channel. That is why it is disturbing.

God, I feel like old

Following the appearance on the Web of a nude photo of Vanessa Hudgens, a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE that the High School Musical actress once sent risqué photos of herself to Nickelodeon star Drake Bell.

Hudgens had emailed photos to the Drake and Josh actor a couple of years ago, before she was famous, the source says.

Bell's rep, Jill Fritzo, tells PEOPLE of the images that began hitting blogs on Thursday: "Drake says he never received those photos."

Hudgens, 18, appeared in a 2006 episode of Bell's Nickelodeon show as his character's girlfriend. In real life, Hudgens is dating her High School Musical costar Zac Efron, and the two are in Australia at the moment, where he is promoting Hairspray.

In a statement Friday, Hudgens apologized for the pictures and says she is "embarrassed over the situation and regret having ever taken these photos."

The pictures, including one nude photo, first surfaced on the Web Thursday, prompting her rep to issue a statement saying that the shot "was taken privately. It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public."

The Disney Channel has said it is continuing negotiations with the High School Musical cast, including Hudgens, for a third installment of the movie series, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment," Disney said in a statement. "We hope she's learned a valuable lesson."

Dont say ur old because ur Right! It is child pornolgraphy. Shes a child star and she is not a good role model at all. I feel like disney should fire her. Shes not fit for disney. I dont like how people say well everyone takes pics like that...um NO!! I dont and I know a lot of people that dont. It was a stupid choice for her and it will effect her.

Oh my...I will never look at her the same way again. She looks very young... with her blue stuffed animal on her bed...like a child and she was! How can she represent Disney? Reading all the gross comments about her pic makes me sick. I am baffled how Disney can stand by her...she must make them lots of $$$.

I'm surprised that her rep confirmed it too... must mean there's a ton of other stuff out there. How dumb do you have to be to take and send pics like that when you want to be a public figure?

^^ oops... forgot to put this in my first post... ClaireZk, it seems to me that Vanessa Hudgens was plenty old enough to make decisions re: consenting to sex an the like when those photos were taken. I recognize that the law draws a bright line because otherwise things would be an administrative nightmare- but I think we can all recognize that the purpose of the law probably isn't offended here. That's why cases like this properly fall low on the prosecutorial priority list- it's more important to hunt out people exploiting kids. Only rarely does the law get enforced here, when it's a late teenager sending photos to a similarly-aged SO- one girl was convicted recently- 16yo IIRC.

I'm glad Disney didn't fire her. They still made their stern, parental statement about life lessons and lapses in judgment, and they are modeling a lesson of forgiveness, themselves. I'd rather them set that example than one of neo-victorian shame over a naked body.

I don't understand how a naked body photo = consenting to sex. Explain your rationale. I get the whole child pornography component of the photo's leaking on the internet, which is troubling, indeed. But that and the state-by-state age of sexual consent provisions are two separate legal beasts.

I feel terrible for Vanessa that these pics were leaked but I don't understand why she would be guilty of pornograpgy. They were personal pictures of herself, sent to a boyfriend. I find it even more disturbing that someone would leak these pictures seeing how young she looks in them.

I also feel that if Disney had sacked her, how would parents explain to their kids the reason she isn't in the next movie?

Distributing nude photos of minors is child pornography. All of the people who are downloading these pictures and ogling them are committing a federal offense. I didn't say anything about her sex life.

It is troubling to me that Disney would be permissive about this issue. Basically, Disney is condoning child pornography by not speaking out against it.

She was underage when the photos were taken and now they have been seen by millions of people around the world. This is a high profile celebrity in the world of children's entertainment. It sends the message that it's okay for child stars to plaster naked pictures of them selves all over the place and still be role models to our kids. NO THANK YOU. I don't care who took these pictures and why. Disney needs to just get rid of her and wash their hands of this.
