Upgrading Engagement Ring

I know people who have upgraded their diamond rings, and I know people who wouldn't in a million years. If your ring is of high sentimental value to you, then keep it as it is. Really showy jewelry is more of a celebrity or "real Housewives" thing, if you ask me.

Sometimes I think a down payment on a house makes far more sense.:p

Hi, I've been lurking on this forum for a while. Great Forum! This is my first post so be gentle on me!

I have been reading that many of you appear to upgrade your engagement rings and wonder how people feel about this.

I received my engagement ring 18 years ago. I loved it then and I love it now. It is relatively small but it is the ring that my husband gave to me when he asked me to marry him. Although I would love a fantastic HUGE diamond I just could not imagine wearing anything other than the original. I wear it with an eternity ring (row of 7 diamonds), which my husband surprised me with after the birth of our children.

I am not judging anyone for upgrading, just curious as to whether you gave it any thought before changing and whether this bothered you also?

I should mention that I am from the UK and perhaps this makes a difference.

Hi Greenleaves! I'm sorry to ask you a question about a really old thread you've done in the past about the Cartier love bracelet style from Dubai jewellers! Can you do a review and impression with it pleasssse?? ..I'm about to order from them i want to know if it's good quality! Thanks! :):worthy:

In my circle, I'm the only one I know 'upgrading'.
It's only the diamond - which I never really liked in the first place. The actual gold, the ring itself, I'm am absolutely attached to quite deeply.
I had a G SI1, Good polish/symmetry/cut, 1.01 princess to a gorgeous, sparkly 2.22, E, Ex polish/symmetry, VG cut. Absolutely LOVE this stone. The claws are being remade to fit the bigger stone but that's it. No adjustments or changes.

Interesting thread, even though it's 5 years old almost to the day.

It's kind of strange to look at ame's post, knowing what happened to her ring years later (wow, that's really bad luck with diamonds)

I'm in the "no-upgrade" group: my e-ring's value in my heart is not in the stone or the setting, but in both. I couldn't imagine changing either.

I would be ok with wearing my wedding ring with another diamond ring (or any other statement ring), and leave my e-ring home, but I wouldn't call it a second engagement ring, because, obviously, only the original one was involved the day he proposed and we got engaged ;)

I just upgraded my ring 2 months ago. Totally in love! At first I was hesitant but the more research I did I realized my husband had no clue about diamonds when he bought my ring (7 years ago) The specs were not good. He was relieved when I upgraded bc the new rock I got was spectacular!!! He looks at it and know that he can afford it and the smile on my face is worth it :) I kept my original setting. I love the idea that he went out and picked the style of the ring so I didn't want to change the style of my ring. Same ring just a bigger sparkier rock! :) never regretted it one bit.

My hubby was the same! He's happy (and a little cocky too) that he can and wants me to have a bigger and better diamond.

When he first saw the original stone, he said to the guy 'is that it? I thought it would be bigger' . Now we BOTH have the ring he envisioned.
