Hi, I've been lurking on this forum for a while. Great Forum! This is my first post so be gentle on me!

I have been reading that many of you appear to upgrade your engagement rings and wonder how people feel about this.

I received my engagement ring 18 years ago. I loved it then and I love it now. It is relatively small but it is the ring that my husband gave to me when he asked me to marry him. Although I would love a fantastic HUGE diamond I just could not imagine wearing anything other than the original. I wear it with an eternity ring (row of 7 diamonds), which my husband surprised me with after the birth of our children.

I am not judging anyone for upgrading, just curious as to whether you gave it any thought before changing and whether this bothered you also?

I should mention that I am from the UK and perhaps this makes a difference.

im from the uk and personally i wouldnt have any problem upgrading - you can always keep your original ring or maybe have it re-set into a necklace perhaps??or if you have a daughter pass it to her when she is old enough ???????????

We upgraded my ring recently and I couldn't be happier. I have never been 'attached' to a stone and neither had DH. We got engaged young with every intention of upgrading.

I don't think I would ever change my wedding band though. But who knows....I'm fickle :D

I've only been engaged about a month, but I love my ring. I couldn't imagine upgrading it beyond recognition...there are 4 small stones in the center though that I would perhaps upgrade to one larger one years from now, but I am satisfied with the ring I have.

I see no issue in upgrading e-rings. I only have a wedding ringyself and I would never upgrade it. Where I live we have a 'growing diamond' concept and it is completely accepted to upgrade via this system.

I think it's ok to upgrade if your taste or budget has changed. As said before you can make a new jewel with it or give it to your daughter or daughter in law.

I am not attached to a stone given to me, but more of what it symbolizes.
We upgraded mine after 9 yrs, DH was very excited about it. The symbolism of him slipping a ring on my finger is still intact.

Gosh I am surprised that everyone upgrades.

My budget would allow me to, but I just couldn't imagine changing my engagement ring. I guess I would rather spend my other on other items.

"everyone" definitely doesn't upgrade.
In my personal life I know very few people that have done it. You're asking on an admittedly materialistic website
Pretty sure "most" people here don't do it.

You can spend your $$ however you wish. Some people like to upgrade, some people dont.... :shrugs:

You misunderstand me (I think). I don't disagree with how people spend their money and whether they upgrade or not. I am not critising those for doing so, just surprised that so many do.

I personally am attached to my engagement ring for sentimental reasons (and I still love the ring). Therefore when considering other items of jewellery I would prefer to buy other items, rings included but leave my engagement as it is and continue to wear it.

Please don't think that I am judging anyone, just curious and surprised that all the responses were pro 'upgrading'.

I get it!
I find that it may be about 50/50. A lot of girls are very attached to their original ring, it holds much sentimental value, for others. . . not so much.
I don't feel judged, it's all good. Wonder why people that wouldn't upgrade haven't weighed in yet. We've discussed this A LOT, perhaps people feel like they're already answered this too many times :shrugs:

I agree with Swanky. I don't know anyone in my personal life who upgraded. Only a few of my friends could become future upgraders as the have a special 'thing' with jewelry.
