The nick is more of a dent. She thinks it somehow happened in shipping from Honolulu to Boston. If you hold the ring up vertically so that the diamond is at 12 o'clock then the dent is on the front face at about 10 o'clock on the band. Its about the width of my fingernail and looks like how sillyputty/playdoh would look if you pressed the tip of your fingernail into it about a millimeter deep. Its not all that noticeable but as soon as she mentioned it, I obviously looked and could see it immediately. She said they would try to buff it out but that she would feel better if they just fully re-set the stone because "it should be perfect". She was really insistent and said that she would set it up so that I could just drop it off and then they would hand deliver it to me so that I didn't have to make the trip into the city twice. I was pleased that she was so concerned about the flaw and was trying to minimize the impact to me by letting me still wear the ring out but having a detailed plan for getting it fixed at a time that would be least impactful to me (while I'm on vacation).

I die.. that ring is gorgeous! I would also take them up on resetting it. I know what you mean about not wanting to part with it but I think you'll be happy if you just get it over with.

What a beauty!

Babilu - The upgrade was extremely easy. We went in on Sunday and looked at what they had in stock and decided on color and size range and then went through the computer to find the perfect ring. They ended up bringing two into town (Boston) for me, a 2.32 ct from Beverly Hills and the 2.44 ct from Honolulu. I had to leave my original ring with them so that their in-house appraiser could look it over on her normal shift on Monday (some places make them send it to NYC for appraisal which takes longer so I'm glad I could avoid it). By Wednesday morning the rings were at the store so we went in and I, of course, ended up picking the bigger one. They give you a credit of the appraised value of original diamond, minus the cost of the platinum band. This was a loss of less than $500 (~3% of the original price) for me. There were no other fees. I've heard sometimes they might charge a restocking/resetting fee as well but the upgrade was over 5x the original purchase so we didn't have to pay any of that. We paid, they gave us champagne and did a final check of the diamond and ring. When checking it, the SA found a nick in the plat band so she is insisting that we send it in to get reset in a new band while we're on vacation next month. I'm torn on the resetting because a) I kind of like the imperfection (in a band, would hate it in a stone!) because it makes it 'mine' and b) I don't want to be without it. =)

Thanks all for the sweet comments. You guys are so nice!

Oh...didn't seem too complicated at all! How long did you have your original ring for? Do you have to wait a certain number of years until you can get the upgrade?

We also got ours at the Boston store (Copley to be exact. The SA's name was Peter)....we used to live there until about 1 yr ago:smile1:

I had my original ring for just under 4 years. Their policy is that the upgrade is only available within the first five years but I've heard that they sometimes waive that requirement (probably especially if you're spending big). The 5 year limit always confused me because it doesn't seem like a long enough time to have changed your finances enough to suddenly afford at least twice the purchase. Ten or 15 years seems more appropriate although since diamonds don't age, I don't know why any time limit is necessary. Anyway, its definitely worth asking if you're past the five years but still interested!
