Tricks of the trade- How do YOU clean patent leather?

I'm going to upload a pic for you ladies to see, and CTS please let me know if that is the type of mark that an acetone-based remover can remove immediately. I tried it on a fake patent pair, and all it did was smudge the black mark around -_-. Either way, I think I'm going to take these to the cobbler tomorrow and see what he says. I've been told by my Nordstrom's SA that CL patent leather can be buffed out...

I will! Yeah, I don't know anything about chemistry but it only works on real patent leather. Beats me as to why.

Seriously, I thought my mom was crazy when she suggested it to me but I let her convince me. I was freaked out but it was like magic. Just a teeny bit on a cotton swab and run it across the scuff. It must be acetone-based and must be real patent, but give it a shot on a pair that is less important to you and see what you think :smooch:.

I will definitely give it a go. That sounds amazing. As advised, I'll try it on a pair of less special shoes first!

For patent scruff removal, I have tried with success, using Magic Eraser, or a cotton swab lightly dipped in acetone (or nail polish remover with acetone) and lightly ran the swab over the mark. Yes, the results aren't immediate. Don't panic. Store it and let it dry, and the mark will be gone.

That's my own experience, and I do it to my high end patent shoe as well

Here is the shoe. Any similar experiences? I love how the other side is perfect with no marks.... -_-

I have used acetone nail polish remover to remove a white scuff from my black patent new simples. I immediately followed the scuff removal with a heavy coat of vaseline and 15 minutes in the freezer, before wiping off vaseline and buffing shoes with a soft cloth. I posted about it in the shoe care thread (if you haven't read that thread there is tons of advice in it).

I now treat all my patent shoes to a Vaseline treatment once a year!

Awesome tips on the vaseline and freezer aftercare (well...after the acetone application). I will try that next time myself. Thanks :)

Does the 'scuff' look deep to you? Vaseline didn't work, neither did windex. Let me know if these marks have appeared on your shoes before and if you were successful at removing them with nail polish remover (can you recommend the specific brand you use?) Thanks a lot!!

It looks to me like a pretty basic scuff to me--nothing unusual. I have never had a scuff on patent leather that did not come off with nail polish remover. The brand does not matter at all, just must be acetone based.

Do I need to do anything after the acetone?

Agree with others a damp cloth for removal of general dirt and dust and then can use various conditioners. Vasaline works well, but I also found hairspray works quite well to remove marks.

Hi ladies,

I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome tips!! I noticed some silver scuff marks on my nude patent leather Simple pumps and immediately started to freak out. I began to browse this thread and I can happily say the scuffs are completely gone. I used acetone nail polish remover, applied it to the marks using a q-tip. Wiped the area dry, then applied Vaseline. I let the vaseline sit on the area for about 2-3minutes then wiped it clean with a baby wipe. The area is completely Scuff free!!! YAY!! Thanks again

:ghi5: Awesome!

I had similar issue with my patent leather YSL tribute. Put the pink patent tribute sandal next to the green patent tribute on shoe rack for about one month. I didn't notice that until yesterday when picked the pink out to wear and found there were color transfers between the green and pink pairs! Now there are marks on both pairs although they are all brand new :( ? Is there any solution for my shoes ladies? They were so beautiful before this happened...
