Tricks of the trade- How do YOU clean patent leather?

I've used nail polish remover and it seemed to remove some of the shine. However, the scuffs seemed less obvious.

My shoe guy advised me to use a gentle solution of vinegar instead. That worked too.

The vinegar smelled really bad though. So I used Applegarde Leather Cleaner and a soft cloth to get rid of the smell. It also restored the shine to a lovely gleam.

Mods, please feel free to move this thread to the appropriate location. I have read posts about 'skid' marks on patent being removed with Vaseline or Windex, but there is a fair amount of women who say this does nothing to remove the marks. I've read that nail polish remover is the solution--ladies, if any of you have ever bumped your feet into each other with your patent leather shoes at some point, what did you do to get the marks off? I'm worried the nailpolish remover will ruin and discolor the patent (these particular shoes are black). ladies, what are your tried-and-true solutions? Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Definitely do NOT use nail polish remover. It will remove the shiny finish. I have never had this problem with scuffs with any of my CL patents as they're so durable, but I've had scuffs on non-CL patents which I've just removed by rubbing with kitchen roll and water. Vaseline is also good for cleaning patent.

I'm not sure why this happened either :( it definitely is a surface mark...like a line of black non-shiny mark. It could be that when I was walking quickly, my shoes did a quick bump and maybe that's how they happened (I was walking downtown among a large crowd of people). I've tried patent leather cleaner (a foam) and it didnt do anything..so maybe its not strong enough. Let me try the Vaseline now...what's a kitchen roll? Thanks for your help :)

I havent had this happen to mine. my feet bump each other all the time in my Nude Rolando's but no black mark..Actually the first time it happened i immediately looked at them cause i thought the mark would have been there but nada!...Good luck getting it removed.

So my shoes are black, and theres a non shiny black line on the shoes...its like a color transfer (because shoes are black, color of 'mark' is black). The patent is very smooth and not scratjces, just that there's this mark. I've bumped my foot once wearing my dark green Biancas, and checked them, but no problem either. These filos suck! I tried the Vaseline just now and it didn't seem to take anything off. :(

Do you have a pic?

I actually disagree. This is debatable. We have had this discussion in multiple threads and the result of opinion is usually 50/50 with some folks like honey warning against it (for whom I have the utmost respect :hugs:) and people like me saying I use nail polish remover (acetone) all the time. I have used it for dozens of scuffs in patent without any negative result. You might wanna do a search throughout the forum angie or try it out in an inconspicuous spot on a less expensive patent leather shoe. Good luck with whatever you try!

Thanks for clearing this up. I stand corrected! I confess I haven't actually tried it myself, I just assumed it would be a no-no. If you have used it with success, I will trust you and give it a try myself! Thanks.

Seriously, I thought my mom was crazy when she suggested it to me but I let her convince me. I was freaked out but it was like magic. Just a teeny bit on a cotton swab and run it across the scuff. It must be acetone-based and must be real patent, but give it a shot on a pair that is less important to you and see what you think :smooch:.

I'm going to upload a pic for you ladies to see, and CTS please let me know if that is the type of mark that an acetone-based remover can remove immediately. I tried it on a fake patent pair, and all it did was smudge the black mark around -_-. Either way, I think I'm going to take these to the cobbler tomorrow and see what he says. I've been told by my Nordstrom's SA that CL patent leather can be buffed out...
