Is it common to be offered gloves before handling bags? My SA sometimes puts on gloves but I've never been asked to do so.

In my experience, I've only been asked to put on gloves once, handling an exotic leather bag, never for non-exotics.Is it common to be offered gloves before handling bags? My SA sometimes puts on gloves but I've never been asked to do so.
Only during Covid and once when I am not sure whether I will take the bag. But usually the gloves r new.Is it common to be offered gloves before handling bags? My SA sometimes puts on gloves but I've never been asked to do so.
Never for me but I generally don’t look at bags unless I am serious about buying it.Is it common to be offered gloves before handling bags? My SA sometimes puts on gloves but I've never been asked to do so.
Very strange. Wearing the dirty gloves to touch the new bag seems a bit pointless - like it defeats the purpose of why you'd be wearing the gloves in the first place. (Unless your hands had visible motor grease on them or something, but I highly doubt that!)Wandering into the Hermes boutique in Short Hills NJ, I inquired after the SA I typically work with who was out sick. There was a lovely display Garden Party 30 and I asked to see it for a size reference. It was not in a case just on a shelf. The SA carried it over to a case and then opened a drawer, took out a lovely silk pair of gloves for herself and then handed me a pair of very used, dirty white cotton gloves, and instructed me to don them before touching the bag. I asked for a clean pair and she refused to provide them. After several long seconds of staring incredulously at her and feeling embarrassed for her lack of manners and protocol, I requested that she just show me the bag herself and told her that I didn't need to touch it. I thanked her and walked away. Having been to Hermes Boutiques worldwide, I know this isn't the usual experience. Everyone had always been gracious and professional. Oh well.
agree with this ^Never for me but I generally don’t look at bags unless I am serious about buying it.
I’m not asked to wear gloves any more, but in the old days here in Melbourne we always did when looking at a bag. But like others I wouldn’t handle something I didn’t intend to buy unless I was trying it on for size (and then I’d tell my SA that before touching it).Very strange. I also echo others in that I've never been asked to wear gloves when inspecting a potential bag purchase.
But I applaud you for your response to an otherwise awkward/puzzling scenario.
I was asked to put on disposable fabric gloves to handle “display only” bags but never for bags offered for purchase. Is it common to be offered gloves before handling bags? My SA sometimes puts on gloves but I've never been asked to do so.
I am all for putting gloves on to inspect a handbag: display or for purchase. But they should be new gloves, disposable. Not pre-worn (many times). It would be like putting your feet in someone else's stockings to try on shoes. And the haughtiness that accompanied the request and entire interchange was something out of a movie, TBH. Didn't think people truly acted like this anymore.I was asked to put on disposable fabric gloves to handle “display only” bags but never for bags offered for purchase.
Can you specify the location? I heard that in some locations in Asia there are display bags that are specifically available for anyone to purchase as walk-ins.I was in the area, so I went to a store I don't usually go to* because they never have bags available and their customer service isn't the best - it's not just me whining for bags, their reviews show clients having issues in every area from shoes to watches to silks and mentioning the robotic and icy service. I went in not interested in bags for once. Well guess what they had available? Three bags on display FOR purchase. They made sure to let the customers know that's all the bags they have today, and the others were about as interested as I was (not very). The bag COLORS were ideal/most popular, but the styles were less popular ones: noir with palladium hardware 24/24, a mauve sylvester mini bag of some sort that is not on my radar but around 9K, and an in the loop in etaupe. I want that color very badly, but I am on the fence about in the loop, it looks tiny for my needs and I already have a picotin that I love more as a bucket style.
I was shocked they were still available, though. Is this just what H is like during a week day? Or is the Hermes bag frenzy finally dying down? I've only ever been on Saturdays, so maybe that's why my luck wasn't great. Or is it just how it goes, when you aren't hunting for a bag, they'll be in stock with something. How annoying.
I didn't overhear anything interesting, just someone else asking what bags are available and the SA pointing to the display for purchase case. She unlocked the in the loop and told me the prices. There was a display only case with an orange picotin wearing a rodeo. I wasn't rodeo hunting either, but I don't know if they would have sold it to me... do people ask?
I did purchase a twilly out of the display case bc I didnt see it in the drawer, it was the sea silk quest. I love the mermaid-horses.
* I don't live close to any boutique to make it my "exclusive home store" and the last time I liked a twilly this much and tried to wait to go through a dedicated SA, it sold out.
Sure, Palo Alto, CA. They usually never have bags (for walk-ins) and I never saw a display case in any store with bags that you can buy. And all in "in-demand" colors. Can you specify the location? I read somewhere if a store needs to hit sales goal, they will start offering bags to sell at the end of the month lol, maybe this is that scenario?Sure, Palo Alto, CA. I think I read somewhere (honestly can't remember where) that stores have a monthly sales target to meet, so sometimes bags become available towards the end of the month. Or maybe the stores need to get rid of certain inventory, like how display bags are rotated out (I don't know when that happens, probably store specific).Sure, Palo Alto, CA.
