top 7 pieces every woman must own in her life time?

+1with @doni, @saligator, @AntiqueShopper, and @Joule. This thread also made me think of the quote by Coco Chanel. “A woman should mix fake and real,” she once declared. “The point of jewelry isn’t to make a woman look rich but to adorn her—not the same thing.”
Although I own or have owned many of the must haves on the list of others, I want my list to reflect my personal taste as per @HauteMama. Most of these as per @saligator , and @doni, can go from day to night. After decades of wearing diamonds in wg, DH and my jeweler said that YG is more flattering and youthful (couldn’t they have mentioned this sooner)
all top three also make me feel like me and like royalty as per @Hekate03)
1. My torso puzzle pendant by Miguel Borrocal (this is made of base metal) and is closest to the CC quote above. I wear it on a hardware lanyard, rubber cord or etsy metal choker. (It was given to me by my stepfather who collected boroccal scupture and wh9 knew many artists personally. It also inspired me to start collecting art.
2. A pair of yg clip Corne earrings by Verdura Belperron) that can be worn day or night
3. A favorite watch (I ’borrow’ any from DHs small collection except the Alange zeitwork and wg Odysseus). Mainly a tonneau wg Breguet or an IWC Portugueser. My most unique watch is a wg gerard perrigeaux from my GM (last pic) it’s links are structured like a bridge.
4. a statement/fantasy piece (since I was a teenager, I adored the verdura Maltese cross cuffs on Coco Chanel. I never thought I’d ever own anything like that, (as per @papertiger #7 below) but DH made it happen for our thirtieth wedding anniversry 2021. I intend to wear it daily and as per @Joule, I’ll feel like Wonder Woman . Unlike many TPFers, I prefer to wear my jewelry very loose and like movement. . .
5. Rings that make you feel fabulous and part of the family tapestry (as per @doni) : a vintage rose cut that my godmother gave me in college (it used to belong to my aunt); an oval diamond from my grandmother that I had reset; and, an emerald cut solitaire and earrings from my mom (the later two part of graduation presents).
6. Pearl strands Preferably Black Tahitian orsouth sea pearls, baroque or round, but I have some white too, the bigger the betterm and relatively cheap From the Philippine pearl markets. My godmother handpicked my most classic large graduated black grey pearl strand. . (I bought them bc I obsessed about an angela Cummings strand at bergdorfs. Mine were less than the tax on the Cummings strand). Over the years, I’ve had my jeweler remake baroque strands by adding wg chain to strands that can be combined or doubled, and diamond clasps to others.
7. Dealers choice as per @jelliedfeels Mine is a hand set Georgian antique necklace of Russian aquamarines with a detachable Maltese cross pendant/pin (that I rarely wear but adore) or my VCA six motif gmop necklace that I wear quite a bit.
Number 2,4, and 7 were purchased recently thanks to advice from @papertiger, @Notorious Pink, @BigAkoya ,@kipp, @Rockerchic @Comfortably Numb, @etoupebirkin, and after reading posts of numerous other TPfers. I could not have figured out how to curate, transform and weed out my collection otherwise. (As is the family custom, jewelry that I no longer wear gors to other family members, like recycling)

Edit: @muddledmint, my choices are markedly different than yours, so I would love to see an action shot! I can imagine you with lots of stud earrings, necklaces and a big statement piece on your hand!
@jelliedfeels, i cannot do normal clip ones, but Belperron designed hers to fit left and right lobes and to distribute weight evenly. (The clip runs the length of the lobe and there are no pinching pressure points.
@periogirl28, I keep a long strand of pearls with good luster as a place holder, but never wear it. On me, the long pearls can come off as prissy, conservative, matronly or debutanteish, and I don’t quite have the knack to style them. But, I’m hoping someday, they will work.
Apologies for the length of this post.

Coco Chanel loved jewelry. “A woman should mix fake and real,” she once declared. “The point of jewelry isn’t to make a woman look rich but to adorn her—not the same thing.”
Although I own or have owned many of the must haves on the list of others, I find as I get older that I tend to more personalized choices. Most of my choices, as per the advice of @saligator , can go from day to night.
My personal list:
1. My torso puzzle pendant by Miguel Borrocal (this is made of base metal) and is closest to the CC quote above. I wear it most often on a hardware store metal beaded lanyard or a rubber cord. (It was given to me by my stepfather who collected boroccal scupture) and I think of it more as art than jewelry. Any favorite piece that expresses your personality and taste could fit in this slot.
2. As per @doni, a pair of earrings that you could wear for days and nights and can be dressed up or down. (Mine is a pair of yg clip earrings by Belperron).
3. A favorite watch (I like oversized men’s watches and ‘borrow’ any from DHs small collection except the Alange zeitwork and wg Odysseus). Probably the one that he wears the least and I wear the most is a tonneau shaped wg Breguet on a matte alligator band.
4. a statement/fantasy piece (since I was a teenager, I adored the verdura Maltese cross cuff and am in the process of obtaining one). I never thought I would ever be in the fortunate position of considering one, but I intend to wear it daily and it will, in the words of @Joule, make me feel like Wonder Woman
5. Rings that make you feel fabulous and dressed no matter what else you are wearing (mine are a vintage rose cut that my godmother gave me in college and an oval diamond from
My grandmother that I had reset). Both, as per @doni, have a history and many stories behind them.
6. Black south sea pearls, baroque or otherwise, or their equivalent, that can either be classic or edgy. I tend to go relatively cheap on pearls as I don’t mind baroque shapes so long as the luster and color are pleasing and think the bigger the better.
7. Dealers choice as per @jelliedfeels Mine is a Georgian ?antique necklace of aquamarines with a detachable pendant/pin.
Great choices, I love the sound of the aquamarine pin/pendant and a rose cut diamond

Ive never been able to wear clip-on earrings for more than a minute. I am impressed!

I think the whole idea of these lists is kind of silly. I love my diamond studs, but another woman might like larger earrings or standard hoops instead. A pair of diamond studs would sit unused in her jewelry box, despite being told by countless people how they were "must haves".

Likewise, there are people who feel bare without a watch and those who are irritated to no end by having something on their wrist. Why spend hundreds or thousands on a watch or bracelets/bangles if you cannot stand them?

Many women tend to be fond of simple, understated pieces, but some of the most amazing people I see have statement pieces or ethnic jewelry that is simply stunning. For the person who values it, their money is much better spent on items that are big and carry history than on dainty "everyday" pieces.

I guess my point is that everyone's taste, style, socio-economic status and values are different. These cookie-cutter lists seem to take all the individuality out of accessories that are intended to highlight that very thing! So long live non-standard jewelry! I admire that far more on other people than the "must-haves" on all the lists (that mostly blend into the background and go unnoticed).
Totally agree. The lists in this thread are all so similar...like a jewelry uniform!

They look wonderful. Sounds like they are very well-designed too.

I disagree. A lot of people are more minimalist and some people like one-off art pieces and some like antiques but I like hearing all their opinions equally

I personally don’t wear earrings anymore, don’t get fine watches and love coloured gems and sentimental styles but I know slightly camp and Victorian isn’t for everyone:lol:

I’ll caveat this list by saying it may not be for everyone (and I don’t like some of the items on my own list!).

As far as the most timeless and classic items to collect, I think they are:

1. Cartier Love bracelet
2. Tennis bracelet - Boodles has one with a tennis ball on the end, so cute!
3. VCA Alhambra piece
4. Cartier Tank or Rolex Lady Datejust
5. Bulgari Serpenti bracelet
6. De Beers diamond studs or diamond necklace
7. Mikimoto pearls

I would just like to share my own personal list chosen partly from the collection gifted by my mother, grandmother and great grandmother (and either purchased by me or gifted by DH). Yes I obviously inherited their love for jewellery, as well as the actual pieces. Each of us siblings was assigned a whole collection, with emphasis on our birthstones.
So here goes.
1- Diamonds stud earrings in the best specs you can afford, in your fave cut and shape. Size best for your ears. RB D colour Ex for me. Some prefer pearls.
2- Statement bangle or tennis bracelet. Mine is now the VCA Clover Perlee RG
3- Significant piece for a milestone. For some it would be their wedding set and for other perhaps a gift to themselves. To celebrate anything. Mine is Ering in Emerald step cut, Cartier Diamond n Plat eternity band, Tiffany wedding band. My signature pieces.
4- A long sautoir which may be doubled when needed. I would suggest either classic Mikimoto or VCA Alhambra MoP. The lustre of pearls is very important and famously flattering. Working on this.
5- Watch. Useful and elegant. Some need an extra evening dress piece. I just wear mine infrequently now as not a watch person. Was gifted 2 plain Cartiers on graduation (under and post grad) for work, a Rolex and I bought an Hermes Arceau as I love the Moonphase bit. Watches are more DH's thing.
6- Heirloom antique piece or at opposite end, a super modern piece which best reflects your style. Mine are old jade pieces which have been handed down and I wear for both sentimental reasons and because they are my heritage.
7- Very special occasion big gun item, in my case, Emerald birthstone and diamond ring. Reset and designed by me, with good stones from an old ring of my Mum's. Wear anytime, regardless. Alternative for me is a vintage Edwardian brooch, not worn this one yet.

HTH for ideas!
Want to thank everyone for contributing as really enjoyed reading these lists.

Since it's almost May, does that mean another fabulous birthday pressie will be joining this list soon? :graucho:

I've enjoyed reading all the opinions.

I just buy and collect as the mood takes me so I'd be no good at offering advice for other women.

1. It is nice to have something inherited that one's father bought her mother and can remember her loving and so of its time.

2. Also, a present that was given to her by both parents whether for sweet 16 or whenever.

3. Something considerable purchased with one's own money as a reminder of a personal achievement and self-reliance.

4. Earrings you could leave on if it were necessary. When I go on holiday or travelling, I don't like to take off earrings or rings.

5. Something from a loved one (hopefully that can be seen by the wearer - so a ring or bracelet). Doesn't have to be a e-ring or wedding ring and doesn't have to be a partner, could be child to a mother or best friend.

6. Something surprising, for the other side of you.

7. Something you'd never think you could own but then did.

That's it from me.

I love this list for its sentimentality. It speaks to me so much!
