I'd say the Celine luggage totes are pretty "it" right now.

wow actually ITA with you! when i first saw this thread I couldn't think of any 2012 IT bags but you are right...celine luggage tote really is!

I even daresay that the birkin is one...I know it is really a classic but with the Kardashian Klan carrying them like crazy it gives them an "it girl" vibe to me. please don't yell at me for saying that!

I'm not sure how I feel.

I own a couple of 'it' bags I purchased at the height of their popularity (Paddington, Medium Gaucho Saddle) but I still carry them. I feel like since people have retired them, the bags stand out that much more. I don't feel like a relic by carrying passe it bags; in fact: I saw a girl with a bordeaux/burgundy coloured Paddy last month, and it was nice to see the bag out and about.

So then what all the -" really good classic pieces" to invest in?
I love to look through target. I keep a few bags for kickaround when I don't want to use my more expensive ones. They have great beach totes and I get them from lands end too!!

@pandora, I think "classic" is different for every woman according to her life and personal style. You should get something that makes YOU happy, is durable and works for your lifestyle, and will outlast the trends.

@zippy, I love your avatar. Patricia Velasquez was so hot in that movie.XD

It sounds like you bought the bags you did because you love them, not just because they are (or were) "it bags." If you're still carrying them after others have stopped, it shows that you aren't a victim of it bag syndrome. Which is the whole point, right? To carry a bag because you love it, not because of its It Bag status!

ITA with both of you!

Embarrassed to admit I am not sure what the current "it" bag is! I bought a Paddington back when I first became enlightened about the world of designer bags, lol, but I haven't used it in years. I have just realized that Chanel is Chanel, Prada is Prada, Bal is Bal, etc etc so I don't care anymore about having the very latest thing.

I still remember this thread.

About It-Bags, this was during the height of Fendi Spy, etc. At that time, there was quite a topic about celebs and everyone wearing the same thing. Then, eventually, everything was all about Classics. Classics almost on everyone and till now.

Today, I don't think It-Bags is an issue anymore. One example is Prada. I've been a fan of Miuccia Prada works for a long time. At the same time, her collection can also be summed up as 'IT' to some; be it RTW or Prada bag collections over the years. Some may say one can tell if you wear a Prada piece bought from 2 or 3 seasons ago. To some, it might be tacky to wear a 2 or 3 seasons ago; while others might view in another form, that you are a Prada fan.

In any case, sometimes IT bags or latest new creations can be a nice pleasant sighting away from the usual classics. It adds some variety out there and most of the latest creations designs from many designer brands have since improved a lot, imho. I can see value-for-money now more than before. Not only entirely focus on brands/hype only, main attention is on the design and shape.

Tim Gunn may say this in 2007. I don't think it works anymore in 2012. If you want to be on the safe side, follow what everyone has been doing over the years. Collecting classics only is nothing wrong.

Tim Gunn is still saying it in 2012. From his recently published book, "Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible":

A woman is dependent on her purse to help her through the day, and so it often looms large when they think about major purchases.

The culture has taken this a bit too far, however. When I see young women walking around with $10,000 purses, and acting like they're a must-have status symbol, I cringe.

You can get a sturdy, fashionable, long-lasting day purse or briefcase for $200 to $400. This is an area of fashion where having to make do with less is a good thing. If you're budget minded, you're forced to look harder for things, and you can discover a whole world that you never would have found otherwise.

I agree with Gunn! I don't have any "it bag", by that, I mean the new bag you see on models and in the magazines every season but all those professionals know what they are doing: the bag is everywhere, at the beginning you might even not like it.....but little by little you begin to thing it's fabulous....
When the Paddington came out...I resisted...Same with the Fendy Spy....
Would have they been 500 euros...I would have taken the plunge....
But over 1000? No way!

Tim Gunn has said that a bag should be "functional, a workhorse". That being said, if you can find one with those qualities plus has the "looks", I would say buy it. But not at the expense of your being fearful on leaving at your desk. In that case, don't buy it, or just leave it at home. No one needs that kind of stress.

I think that at least part of Tim Gunn's perspective on handbags is that accessories, all of them, are secondary to fashion.

Funny comment from Project Runway All Stars contestant Casanova when asked what he's been doing lately:

I became a bag designer because I'm lazy. I don't have to make any sizes, and it's easy for customers to buy online..

Funny.....Casanova has been in the top three each time. Not bad for a 'lazy' designer! :D

Tim Gunn says no to way too many good things, IMO. wink, wink.

I think it's just embarrassing to have the same bag as everyone else, no matter what it is. It shows more thought to pick something that is just totally you than the bag that "goes with it all."
