I've been wanting to go back for years and the weather had been so weird this winter. My last full day of vacation I decided to haul my DS up the volcano with me because it was a day with no cloud cover... lots of vog, though.

It's a twisty, turny route...

Baby silversword... there weren't any tall ones in bloom at the moment.

Usually I go up for sunrise, but this time we got up to the summit around 3pm, so I was surprised at how not-cold it was. Normally I have to layer up and am still freezing, but I ran around in flip flops and a regular jacket and was fine.

Upward and onward!

In addition to watching out for cattle on the road, you have to keep an eye the Nene! They may look like canada geese, but the Nene are endemic and have much better attitudes.

Informational plaques on the inside.... keeps the wind off, which is nice to be out of... it can get frigid!

You can see the summits on the Big Island... just tipped with snow!

I remember Chez Paul... lol, never ate at it though. I've never stopped for pie at the new place, either. Maybe I should take Courage there. lol Leoda's has a good reputation for pies.

Chez Paul was amazing!! Opakapaka with buerre blanc and Molokai sweet potatoes. Such find memories. Best French food. Funny because it looked like a dive from the outside.
Leodas has a great lunch menu. Try it out sometime. We are planning to come back once schools out. Fingers crossed. Depends on flights and availability at the H 'o olei.
While I'm there if I see somebody wearing the large frivole earrings I'll think it's you!! I always bring mine to Hawaii. They remind me of plumeria. Ok....back to topic.
How much longer do you get to keep the bracelet ?

Wow !! Your photos of Haleakala are amazing.
The last time we drove up I was pregnant and the windy trip was rough. We passed many cyclists and saw snow at the top.
I hope that you have enjoyed your vacation time. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories :)

hahah... You'll know it's me if you see a short filipina wearing large frivole with jade bangles. I wear my earclips so much more now... I've definitely gotten used to the size, love them so much!

I think the last time I went up, I was pregnant, too! I went with my mom... we went to go stargazing, too. Coooold!

Here's looking west... my home town is on the other side of those mountains. So voggy, so it's hard to see clearly with all the haze. It reeks havoc on my sinuses, too.

Last set of pics...

We went down to the lower visitor area and found a patch of ice! That was a first for me. I've never been up there when it's snowed or got cold enough for ice. I had an extra ziplock bag, so I took some home with us in our cooler. lol

I promise to send Courage out soon... I think now that I've managed to get her up to the top of the House of the Sun, I feel good about letting her go. I really wanted to take her to Hana, too... but I think that drive is out of my time capabilities at the moment. :girlsigh:
