Stop Booing Lamar Odom

by Jonathan Tjarks • Mar 19, 2012 1:21 PM CDT

With more reports circulating that Lamar Odom reportedly asked for a buyout from the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the year, the mercurial power forward's relationship with fans in North Texas is likely to become even more strained.

In recent weeks, he's been greeted by a chorus of boos whenever he's entered games in the American Airlines Center.

I'd offer only one word of advice to Dallas fans: Stop!

The Mavericks need Lamar Odom this season and he's not exactly the type of guy who responds well to criticism. If the fans turn on him, he's far more likely to just go into a shell than he is to shrug it off.

Ignore Odom's (admittedly) sub-par production, which is primarily a function of him playing out of position with Dirk entrenched at the power forward position.

He gives Dallas athleticism, shot-creating and play-making off the bench, something this team needs in spades. Without Odom, as became obvious during his shore leave earlier in March, the Mavericks have a glaring hole in their front-court, which has three marginal centers and pretty much nothing behind Shawn Marion and Dirk at the 3/4 spots.

Whatever he's going through off-the-court, he probably won't be with the team next season, so for now, everyone needs to just focus on getting through the year and not pointing fingers.

And no, he does not give the team "athleticism, shot-creating and play-making off the bench". :smile1:

Lamar is a sensitive something....

I don't follow the Mavs so I really have no idea with what's going on with Lamar or the team. Guess he's still having 'adjustment' issues though.

You would think all this negative criticism would make him want to step it up so people could STFU but I guess not. He needs to turn some that some of that emotion into motivation and hunger.

This part I don't understand. He has been playing professional basketball for 13 years plus all the other years when he was on a team before turning pro and he doesn't keep in shape during the off season?

Lamar spent the off season filming with the Kardashians, eating Khloe's food and being lazy. It is pretty obvious from the clips of K+L and Kim's wedding special that working out was not a priority for him. Last year, he was on fire for the Lakers from the start because he had played in the World championships and he was in shape come training camp.

Say what you will about Kris H, he was always taking time to go work out or practice basketball (often leaving Kim seemingly annoyed that he was not going to be at her beck and call 24 hours a day). He talked trainers. He struck me as an athlete. Lamar, not so much. Kris worked at staying in shape. He was ready when the season started. And it has helped pay off for him.

Kris H doesnt have HALF the talent that Lamar has naturally but he makes up for it via hard work. I watched every episode of KKTNY and he was motivated about his training and nothing was going to prevent him from being in shape and improving his game.

I do take into account that Kris grew up as an upper middle class with well educated parents who taught him about work ethic, while Lamar was basically an orphan with Joe as a father.

But he does. Watch the Denver game, even when his own shot are not falling, his passing game keeps their offense flowing and make other players game better.

I would love to see Lamar in NYC playing with Chandler/Anthony or in Chicago. He would be great fit with these teams.

Let's agree to disagree, then. From what I've seen this year, he contributes very little. Yes, the Mavs lost all(?) games where he didn't play, but that's because the only thing less than what he does for the team is nothing.

NY? Are you crazy? The media would have a field day with Lamar, if he behaved there like he behaves in Dallas. They would tear his sensitive behind apart.

I agree with you, he hasnt contributed much to the mavs. When I say their offense flows better with him, I am only talking about the 6-7 games where played decent. For most of the games this season, he has been a nonfactor.

Of course, I don't think the mavs ever needed a player like Lamar and are not using his skills properly. Cuban should have hired a SF who can hit outside jumpers like they had in Caron Butler. This is not Lamar's game, he is a PF who can play the SF occasionally. Cuban is just stupid, he failed to rehire a key player to his championship team and then just sign another forward to fill that role.

LOL Im not talking about confused and lost Lamar, I am talking about the versatile PF that helped LA won two championships. Anthony and Stoudamire cancel each other out in NYC since both look to score and plays little defense. You pair a power forward like Lamar with Anthony, he would complement mello's scoring ability with his passing game and able to play much needed inside defense for the Knicks.

Ok, just listened to CBS Dallas. They said the situation with his dad is real and he is indeed really sick. Sounds like they know what it is too. They said they won't touch it with a 10 feet pole. So, apparentlly, Donnie Nelson, Cuban, Carlisle know, but know one with comment on it publicly.

Anyway, they said it still was no excuse for his play . The bottom line according to them is Lamar doesn't want to be in Dallas. He just doesn't want to be there. They're not letting him go because they feel he can really contribute if he plays like he is capable of playing.

Oh, I definitely see him either playing in LA, Miami, or NYC next season. As much as he is not doing, most understand he's not happy or motivated in Dallas these past 3 months. But most know what he is capable of contributing and his skill set. He is a solid role player. If anything, he's lessening his money, but he'll get a new contract for sure.

You really think LA would take him back? They've done a lot to dump as much salary as possible and they will likely dig (relatively) deep into their pockets to keep Sessions... if anything they'll be looking for a legit SF.
Miami and NYC and BIG markets and they're not going to sign him if he continues to play they way he has been all season long. Not worth the money he'll likely demand and he's probably to proud to take a significant salary cut.

Milwaukee. That's where he's gonna end up. Mark. My. Words. :graucho:

This is actually a good read. Pretty much detailing what Kobe brought up.

Booing Lamar Odom Isn't Helping Anyone

Timpchisholm Mar 22, 2012

“That’s just stupidity.”
- Kobe Bryant

“This crowd needs to figure out who they are rooting for! Let’s go Mavs!!!!”
- Khloe Kardashian

Those are just two of the most pointed reactions to Lamar Odom getting booed at home at the American Airlines Centre in Dallas last night. Bryant, Odom’s former teammate in Los Angeles and his opponent during last night’s game, was incredulous at the treatment Odom was getting. Kardashian, Odom’s wife, tweeted out multiple pleas for the fans to send out positive encouragement rather than raining spite down on her husband. It was all for naught, though, as Odom struggled through yet another ineffective game with the Mavericks and fans grew increasingly frustrated with their high-priced dud.

The thought of booing Odom, though, just feels sort of...wrong. Odom is a notorious hard nut to crack as a basketball player. He has just about every skill you could ask for from a player, but he doesn’t do any one thing well enough to define his game. In truth, his game has historically been defined by its indefinability. When he’s at his best, like he was last season with the Lakers, he can be plugged in to any role, from rebounding big man to point forward to three-point shooter, and succeed. When he’s less than his best, though, he’s as frustrating as any player in the league. That’s because you know that the talent is there and for some reason its lying dormant - which is something no sports fan alive can stomach. Fans hate nothing more than a player performing at less than his best, and when Odom isn’t at his best (and this year he is definitely not at his best) he can be downright bad.

Part of the problem is that the Mavericks have no use for a player like Odom. Rick Carlisle’s Mavs have assembled specialists around Dirk Nowitzki. Lamar Odom is not a specialist, he’s a do-it-all type. The problem is that the Mavs are so well constructed that there is no hole in the roster for him to fill. He comes into games and there is literally nothing for him to do. Well, that’s not exactly true - there is plenty that the club would like him to do - they want to box him into a role and that’s not something Odom has ever thrived at.

Part of the problem, funnily enough, was how easily the Mavs got Odom. They basically had a completed roster for the season and got Odom for free by absorbing him into the trade exception created by the sign-and-trade of Tyson Chandler to New York. Odom was free money. They didn’t need him. They didn’t seek him out. They didn’t sacrifice assets for him that created a natural role for him when he arrived. He just sort of got shoved into a machine that worked without him and no one seems to quite know how to make any use of him. He’s like an extra pair of hands that just gets in they way. Obviously as a GM you don’t turn down a free kick at the Odom can, he was the Sixth Man of the Year for Pete’s sake, but perhaps taking a pass on this one is a decision the club now wishes they made since they have been unable to successfully wedge him into their system or attack.

This is why it seems sort of unfair to boo Odom for his poor season. As much as he’s not figuring out a way to be more effective, the team looks like they have no idea what to do with him. Combine the team’s uncertainty with Odom’s traditional laconic carriage and you have a recipe for fan discontent and, inevitably, booing. This will likely be Odom’s lone year in Dallas (he can be bought out for $2.4-million this summer) and so this story will probably have a rather abrupt and inauspicious end, but hopefully between now and then the fans and Dallas realize that their team’s problems extend beyond just Odom and burying him alone in their dissatisfaction is unfair to the man who has no reason for being there in the first place.
