Hello all~

You may recall that I announced my hunt for my engagement ring in a previous thread... I was just looking into things (possibly a Tiffany Ribbon Ring vs other possibilities) and I mentioned that my boyfriend's mother will be paying for the ring as part of a customary diamond jewelry set given to the daughter in law among other gifts when married...

I went to Birk's first. I learned some more about diamonds and my dbf got a much needed tutorial since he didn't do the homework I sent him (a youtube video on the basic GIA grading system)! The e-rings there were nice, but none really sang to me...

I enthusiastically made a bee-line for Tiffany's, and I had a feeling I would find my e-ring there!

I narrowed it down to 2 choices: the Ribbon Ring and
the classic Tiffany setting!

I didn't think I'd like the Tiffany setting, because it's a basic setting more or less that you could find at any jeweler... but I really thought it was classic and beautiful in a simple way that lets the diamond speak for itself...

Now I have a problem... I CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN THE TWO! I think I need to go 1 more time, this time with some women in tow including my mom and sis...

I couldn't get the poll thingy to work.... I don't know how to add it to my post, but what would you do...

-Choose the ribbon setting ~1.24-1.3 carats H colour VS2 maybe G colour
(the setting adds to the cost but makes a 1.24 diamond look like 1.5~~ for some reason in my opinion)
-Choose the classic tiffany setting ~1.38 carats H colour VS2
-Let bf decide between the two and surprise me since i love both

Please help me decide what to do or offer opinions which I will greatly appreciate! Thanks in advance!

(I will add pics below...)

It's wild for me to think that but this is one of those rare cases where I WOULD say that. I hate surprises and love to be involved and have couples do stuff like this together but if you can't decide, let him. You'll love either one!

Well I guess its not a bad idea to let your bf decide. But I do like the classic setting better. It is just so....Classic, lol, and I dont think you can go wrong with it.

One vote from in my favor of classic---because you can stack bands with it for more variety. With the ribbon you are kind of "locked in".

But I still say let him pick.

I like the classic setting but I also agree that you should let your bf pick! If you like both, it'd be nice for him to surprise you and I'm sure you'll love either if he picks it out for you! GOOD LUCK!

"I think you should definitely let your boyfriend decide...he will be so proud that he picked out something for you that you will love!" True... true.. laurineg1

Kimf79: Yes... I know it's very simple, but for some reason, it is very sneaky and can hold your attention~~ And I have to confess now... near the end of our consultation... I let the SA put away the ribbon ring.... So you think that I'd be settled... but I can't stop thinking about both...

ame: ~~ Kke you are leaning toward one after all... :graucho:
I know exactly what you mean... I tried on the ribbon ring once with a wedding band (a thin one) and the SA said I might have to get one custom made if I want them to go together ... otherwise, the wedding band wouldn't match up too well because the ribbon setting juts out from the band... I do like the idea of being able to play around with different bands later on...

I tried on the shared setting wedding band with tiny diamonds which looked like they were just dropped onto my finger delicately because the setting doesn't show much... It fit well with the diamond engagement ring...

How do you feel about the Classic Tiffany Setting being so similar to other styles available in other stores?

" Both are stunning but my heart skipped a beat when I opened the link to the ribbon ring. Good luck on your selection!" Drop Bag Gorgeous... When I read this, I immediately thought, 'Oh...no....'
And then I clicked the link and remembered how beautiful it is...
but I still don't know...

Classic, you can never go wrong with it; and 10 years later, that will still be a classic design that you will never grow tired of. I remember reading one of the tpfer's thread saying she picked a ering with shaped side stones from cartier 10 years ago but now she doesn't love it any more... Anyway, the classic design is the safest way to go especially if you love it.

I would let him pick....

But I'm on team ribbon. Its what you fell forfirst and I feel the classic appealed to you because of the carat size (maybe I'm wrong). I'd rather have the maximized size in the ribbon than a classic ring. I love having a more unique design. For a while I thought I should have gone solitaire but then my DF actually shook me out of it. He knows I want something different and all the compliments I've had were because the setting is so eye catching. The ribbon has that something special! And I've seen pictures of it with a wedding band that looks lovely! Check our reference thread, I think someone had one.
