Are you saying that some tfp members are also H employes? I suppose it would make sense for them to be a members here to read what H customers think.
No sorry Nahreen, I meant on the Hermes Instagram account-I was wondering if Hermes Corporate would reply to the questions about the process for scarves on their Instagram posts.

I'm sure there are few employees that read here but I don't know for sure!

Just posting a couple of my new acquisitions. Like @rainneday, I'm having a little difficulty showing the true colour of Au Bout du Monde cw04, so have included my colvert B for reference & to try & tempt @Pocketbook Pup (I hope I've got the colvert fan right!).
Also yesterday's sole purchase at FSH (not a huge amount of new season there yet), Hermès Electrique cw08 brique/orange/prune.

I love the Electrique! So cool!

Yes, that CW is particularly difficult to properly represent in photos!

Congrats!

The scarves larger than 90cm in silk and all cashmere are hand screened, there is not a machine process as far as I'm aware to do such large format printing.

In my opinion H has found a wonderful balance of merging technology with their traditional methods. New silk techniques ensure colors don't run or fade which is a great benefit. Not every company uses technology to cut corners, if they no longer hand screen I don't think it would detract from the scarf.
If anyone would like to continue the technology and printing technique conversation, there's this thread:

All Handmade?

I'll bump it in a moment as the discussion doesn't really relate to the specific Fall 2016 scarves!

I really appreciate your posting this link, MrsOwen3, as I am thoroughly fascinated by all the discussion around this topic!

About screened vs ink jet printing, many of the reissues are no longer screened the way they used to be. Hermes has always been quiet about that, to point of letting everyone be blissfully thinking the printing process has not changed. I doubt an SA would know for certain how a design is made.
An obvious difference is the addition of colors in the backgrounds, all that remix stuff, color blocks. That hides the fact that the design itself printed quite differently - fewer screens/colors.
One possibility: new issues have less shades of gold (for ex) in the gold hardware. The result is more comic book / graphic looking than the original printing due to lack of color nuances.
Another possibility is the use of a finesse style - pen & ink line drawing designs which are testament to the fewer screen trend. The tattoo series , the bandanna, this seasons legendes de l arbre are examples, C est la Fete CS scarf.
Ink jet printing is yet another possibility. I think all (most) of the 70s, maxi twillies etc are done that way. Maybe not the twill 90s. Could not say about the 140s. My silk 140s certainly look to have been inkjet printed.
How can you tell? An experienced eye can tell the difference. The easiest way is to put two scarves (new & old) alongside one another and compare some detailed sections. Are they identical ? Does the new designs look blurry ? less crisp ? Those are signs of ink jet printing. Count the colors - fewer means elimination of screens.

Thanks for posting this, Marietouchet. I'm always interested in scarf design theory-- and am also glad to know it's not all in my head that many of the designs now seem oriented around a completely different (and more economical) production process.

Hi, yes, in the past few years Hermes has been digitally printing some scarves (inkjet method some call it), or they use more technology instead of all hand screened like in the past. I read an article years ago where someone mentioned they were experimenting with "new" machines. Then we noticed scarves of the new method came to market. Hermes has been quiet about this, but I had a long discussion with my SA and SM. It's true, and while the products are very beautiful, many longtime collectors prefer the old way.
Wa Ko Ni became collectors grail because it has the most colors/screens (46) and it was done all by hand! It was before the machine. Not sure if it's going to be re-issued how they're going to print it, due to the new technology. Another scarf widely rumored to be inkjet printed is Jardin de Leila (and that season's scarves). If you compare the old Au Coeur de la Vie with the re-issue, there's difference in depth of colors. That's why collectors prefer the original issue (of Au Coeur de La Vie) than the re-issue, hence higher price for the older ones.
Specifically about the new Lalbhai, I haven't seen it in person, so I'm not sure how they print it. The older ones were hand screened.

Remember the fabulous (well, I think so) Indian Dust scarf? I recall that Hermes actually advertised its inkjet process because it was not their standard process, and it gave the scarf a distinctive look, which they were proud of. I love my colorway of it and love that it stands out in my scarf drawer-- but I'm not so thrilled about other designs I love (like ACdlV, one of my all-time favorites) getting the same treatment. I can definitely see the distinction between the first and second issues on that design.

I'd be very interested to hear any opinions on the printing of the new Lalbhai. That's another of my absolute favorite designs, and I expected to buy several colorways this season, so I was surprised when I saw it in person and it didn't move me the way that that design has in so many different formats and colorways in the past. I wonder if it's the different printing process. It looks great on the members who've modeled it, and there's no right or wrong type of printing to prefer aesthetically, but it is interesting to reflect on the history of the H scarves and these distinctions.

I don't think these have been posted yet.

I kind of like 03 too. I'll have to see it in person though...
Yes! gun to my head, 03 would be the next choice after 08. Of course, who wants to think in those terms when discussing $1100 scarves! I'm still sad that H went this route with my beloved CLF. I don't buy CSGMs anyway so it's not a huge loss to me personally but I know many were looking forward to this reissue and [with some exceptions of course] it seems most opinions have not been favourable. I'm still waiting to see it in silk!

Now that Mumbai above is STUNNING! Of course I don't care for fringe simply for the fact that I worry I would play with it and unravel the whole thing haha.

I'm with most of the others - I was very excited about it and now mostly disappointed. I haven't been sucked into the CSGMs yet either and while I'm looking forward to the gavroches, I don't usually wear that size...
