The purple envelope clutch sounds WONDERFUL!
The bags we carried in high school in the early 1970s were oversized, glorified knitting bags with shoulder straps. It was a crafty time. And this was part of the original boho look. They were large calico bags, usually a quilted calico in a pre-date of Vera Bradley fabric. They were usually gathered on two wooden dowels with large wooden balls on the ends, like the frames you can buy at craft stores for making knitting bags. They were wide open at the top, with long shoulder straps attached, sometimes with rings, sometimes braided, sometimes with tassels. They were big enough to carry your lunch. The only thing I can find online that's remotely similar is this on ebay, but it's smaller and lacks that puffy gathered calico look:
Wooden Handles.

The bags I bought because they reminded me of high school

were by Betsey Johnson, who else? The line was called "Flower Child" aptly. They even have big wooden balls on the ends of the tassels which made me swoon. And just like in high school mom keeps asking me why I am carrying around a knitting bag. Retro heaven.
