The Dumbest Reason You Ever Gave For Buying a Bag

I'm a newbie right, and I just find it so shocking that people recommend Chanel and Hermes as bags everyone should have, when they cost thousands and tens of thousands of dollars! Lots of influencers will offer or recommend budget options of course, and recognize these bags cost a lot of money! But I've been watching Chinese handbag videos too, and so many of them recommend Chanel classic flap as a person's first bag! For young women and young professionals who most likely don't make a lot of money, saving up for a Chanel classic flap would take a long time. I think anyone can go after whatever bag they want, but for some people, hearing these kinds of things can also make a person feel like they have to spend this much money.

That's so sad and I would say irresponsible. I've been told by a lot of young adults that know friends that have taken out loans for a bag or designer stuff. Apparently, it's seen as a reasonable thing.

I remember spending all my money on clothes and 'stuff' whilst at university so I'm the last person to moralise, but I was also working night and day at the time, buying vintage (thrift) markets rather than just designer/brands. Above all, I avoided all student loans because I was terrified of the interest nd not being able to pay it back.

I have nothing against teens or young adults buying and carrying whatever their heart's desire, but when it's peer pressure (SM is fuelled by peer pressure and FOMO) I am very sad. My favourite discussions with someone over their beautiful CF or other Chanel bags are when they tell me it was their life long dream to own one and carry it every day, or it was for a BIG birthday they held out for.

I convince myself I need a new bag for travel (so I buy one before a trip)… and then while traveling, I convince myself that bags make good souvenirs. You know… “I‘ll always remember [insert place] when I use this”… so I end buying another one.

You have to convince yourself? I admire your reticence and reserve. I need no such convincing

Yes I agree! This is not something I've personally done or something I see my peers go through, but you definitely see people go through this online, either because of influencers or because they are influencers. Social media definitely has made big changes to society, and exacerbated some huge problems.

I just got a bag in a colour that I “don’t know” (doubt is probably the better word...) if it’s gonna gel with my wardrobe/personal style. But still bought in as a challenge to myself to make it work.

It’s like setting myself up to fail.
Oh - this is perfect! I’ve been trying to decide between a beige bag or a popping green leather in the same style. Beige would go with everything I’m sure, but I think the green is gorgeous! I think I might “borrow” your “reason” because I can’t seem to let that green bag go even though I know it wouldn’t match as much of my wardrobe as the beige! Thanks!

I hope you enjoy your green with a pop! Green is my favourite colour. ❤️

The Bal that kept bugging me is purple. Not dark since I can’t rock bright colours but it’s like a soft lavender/lilac/something like that. I wear black streetwear (and own lots of black/neutral bags) but something about this softer colour appealed to me. I left it alone for a few days and it was still there for the taking so I gave in. We shall see how it pans out. :P
