This thread is hilarious and unnervingly close to the truth in many instances. The dumbest/oddest reason I've used, typically for secondhand bags: "I have to make sure somebody (me) who appreciates this bag gets it." Why should it matter to me where in the universe a bag ends up once it's sold? And why would somebody else not appreciate it at least as much as I would? It's not like the bag is talking to me, right? Right??
Along these lines, spouse refers to my collection as the Purse Museum because often the bags just go there to be appreciated and viewed, opened up and then stored back in their dustbags, examined, practice packed, and then back in to rest. I have a lot of admiration for people who use and thoroughly enjoy their bags. I am not quite there yet.
