Yes, you read it right. I heard about this on NPR this now. Here is more detailed information about it. The ring tone is super catchy. LOL

A cellphone ringtone that chants "condom, condom!" has been launched in India to promote safe sex and tackle the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The "condom a cappella" has been designed to break down Indians' reluctance to discuss condom use and to make wearing a condom more acceptable.
Organisers of the campaign, funded by the foundation set up by Microsoft mogul Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, hope the ringtone will become a craze among young Indians.
About 2.5 million people live with HIV in India, said the BBC World Service Trust, the charity behind the ringtone, which was released this month. It can be downloaded at condomcondom.org.
"Ringtones have become such personal statements that a specially created condom ringtone seemed just the right way of combining a practical message with a fun approach," said Radharani Mitra, creative director of the BBC World Service Trust.
"The idea is to tackle the inhibitions and taboos that can be associated with condoms." India is the world's fastest-growing mobile telephone market with 270 million users according to the latest official figures, up 57 percent in just one year.

I heard about this! I hope it does some good. AIDS is slowly becoming an epidemic in India (and in China as well). Mostly due to the conservative gov'ts unwillingness to acknowledge or address the problem. Hopefully they will take the rights steps so aids doesn't ravage these promising and developing and bergoning nations like sub saharan africa.

Interesting. Not all African countries have common cell usage, but some do have usage (but internet connection is another issues in some areas). I've read about the HIV rates over the years and the reluctance that some have to even speak of it, or of safer practices in some countries. If this actually works, I can see them moving it on to other countries too.

Love how it's in India...but sometimes that's what you have to do to have change. It's really crazy though how cell phones have taken over in India. Ringtones are very popular..in fact when you buy music cds (like Punjabi cds) there are codes right on the back of the CD cover that you can text and down the ringtone to your phone. Hope it works!
