The appearance of platinum vs silver and white gold

Platinum is gorgeous and the most durable but as everyone said a lot more pricey too.

White gold is very pretty but not the best choice in a ring or bracelet that you will damage much more easily as it scratches a lot and will look ugly even if you take care of it.

Silver is the least favourable of the three unless you like the tarnished look which can look nice on antique pieces for example.

So if you were looking for earrings, necklaces or pendants white hold, otherwise platinum but it really does depend on your budget as there is a huge difference. All three are nice.

I've always heard the opposite that platinum is softer and scratches more easily than white gold. White gold should show scratches less than platinum? Platinum will get patina while white gold gets yellow potentially. Or that was my understanding

The alloys in white gold make it softer which is why it scratches very easily. At least this was what I learnt when I took classes at GIA. But that has also been my experience; my favorite white gold ring I have hardly worn and I take great care of my jewelry but it is all scratched up regardless.

It seems that today I am quite slow:))) now I have to tell you I have never heard of white gold turning yellow. That is new to me, whether true or an urban legend I have no idea. Platinum is extremely white in color, a lot more so than white gold; while gold is very gray in color as opposed to yellow. Today most white gold is rhodium plated which makes it look extremely white even more so than platinum. The problem is that the rhodium plating wears off which is when it should be replated. They use the rhodium to make the color more attractive and the metal to be harder. Obviously if the rhodium plating wears off then the color will change too, I would think it would turn more gray and less shiny which has also been my experience. White gold is actually kind of a pain and that is why they rec only to use it for earrings and necklaces. Of course I have white gold too just because I know some of their characteristics does not mean I can afford platinum, it is a lot more pricey for its rarity, durability and because it is used in an almost pure form. But if you can choose it is worth paying the extra for it. Rose gold is very beautiful and very unique and def. a lot more durable than white gold. Maybe the nickel turned yellow in white gold but they no longer use it as an alloy in white gold.
