Suede bags - love them or hate them??

I have two bags with suede trim - both are totes with the full suede bottoms. Honestly they both look brand new and I use them alot and put them down everywhere (yes even the floor :shame: ). When I went into the Coach outlet the other week with my Hamptons scarf pattern pink tote with the light beige suede bottom the SA was quizing me on when I got it. She couldnt believe that it looked so good. BTW I got it when it first came out. She said she could tell I took very good care of my bags. Little does she know! Anyways... I left the store with a very big ego. :p

I like the look and feel of suede, but I hate how it can get dirty so easily. The beige suede trim on my new Scarf Print tote is getting messed up (I think it's from my jeans), and I've only carried it 3 times and I'm sooooo insanely careful with my bags! I think I'm gonna call customer service to get ahold of the suede cleaning kit to see if it helps, and maybe find some sort of suede protector (the Coach store recommended scotch guard).

I'm new to this forum, and I also am afraid of keeping suede bags clean. I am in love with the Coach Mosaic hobo cuz it's gorgeous and it features my favorite color, purple, in it. There's a couple of them available on eBay for reasonable prices now, but with all the suede I'm afraid to buy it and then messing it up! Perhaps I'll get over my fear one day and look into the suede protectant spray that was suggested.

IMO, stay away from Coach suede...I have a small suede purple hobo that I purchased several years ago and was extremely disappointed by how quickly it got dirty, and I didn't even carry it in bad weather. I would have been really mad had I not gotten it 50% off at Marshall Fields. My co-worker has a baby blue suede Coach bag and has also been disappointed about how quickly it ages.
I also have a patchwork tote with a beige suede bottom and trim and it is absolutely filthy despite my attempts to clean it using Coach products.

Thanks for the advice Emily. I know what you mean about even having suede trim on a bag getting dirty. If I bought that suede pleated hobo I can envision myself protecting it at all costs on the metro rail to work making sure it doesn't bump into people or touch random surfaces! Talk about high maintenance! LOL!!

I guess I have to ask myself - Do I really want that kind of hassle of constantly monitoring? :shrugs:

But that bag is soo-oo beautiful, and the prices are more affordable now than when it first came out - it makes me want to reconsider suede just this once!

Are you talking about the full suede one or the dusted metallic suede? The dusted metallic suede is much darker and holds up better IMO than the plain suede ones.

I am referring to the all suede purple/pink pleated hobo that came out last winter. I didn't think too much of it then cuz it was too pricey at the time ($598). But then I bought a white one for the summer - it looked completely different and amazing when I tried it on in person - I got alot of compliments on it. With Fall approaching, it made me revisit the suede one again on ebay since I love the style (and the color purple)!

Perhaps I will look into the gold dusted suede as an alternative. Thanks for the suggestion! There are some cute gold dusted hobos on Coach's current website... Does anyone else have dusted suede and are you happy with it?

I have several dusted gold/silver pieces but haven't used it much. The only issue I've seen is that the gold/silver can rub off if you use it a lot (it rubs off on the part where it touches your jeans/clothes). The few times I've used mine, I carried it like normal but just made extra sure that it wasn't "rubbing against me" a lot.

I must be the only person in the entire world that doesn't like the FEEL of suede. I just can't stand to touch it. It's really sad because the other day when I was in the Couch store I fell in love with this bag:

Coach - New CHELSEA NUBUC SATCHEL

It is the most beautiful Periwinkle color and it's suede. :crybaby:
Nope I don't particularly like the feel of suede either..it's like nails on chalkboards to me. I do have two bags that have some suede bits on it though.

kathyrose, just saw your link to your purse collection - it's quite impressive! (And saw your dusted suede stuff too.) Very beautiful pieces!

I may end up caving in and buying the regular suede pleated hobo. I'll just carry it extra careful and only on weekends to show off to my family!

If you get suede in a darker color it should be fine. Mine (2 dark brown, 1 dark purple) have really stood the test of time and are still looking beautiful! Here's a pic of my Market Tote that I got about 4-5 years ago (with an Hermes Twilly). :flowers:

Yep, it's love/hate for me too. Great look, but here in Seattle I'm afraid of too much rain and moisture exposure  . In general, I need more 'structured' bags that can take a beating (or perhaps I need to be more gentle) . I have a couple suede bags (one chocolate, one burgundy), but the poor brown one is really showing its age and may go out to pasture soon.
