Question to all about ready-to-wear. It seems like H instructions are dry clean for all - even cottons. I understand that it is a must for silks and blends. Do you follow the instructions? I'm thinking of machine washing or handwashing my cottons. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I don’t have any H cotton but I’ve hand washed my cashmere sweaters.

I machine wash on gentle with a silk detergent then air dry then iron for cotton pieces. If it’s more complex than a short or shirt then it goes to dry cleaning

I have handwashed my cotton TShirts so far, with a delicate detergent.
I have also handwashed carres (silk or cashmere/silk) .
And I have washed a silk carre in the washing machine 🫣 😅 with specific Silk cycle and special detergent. To me it looks totally fine, but I have not taken any mesurements whether it did shrink. Not sure if I want to know 😂

I have machine washed a cotton jacket with metal buttons on hand wash setting. If it really is just cotton and there is no special treatment like pleats, leather patches, particular metal pieces (that will get banged up), several different types of fabric (such as a different lining fabric), risk of bleeding or staining due to overly saturated colors + white or whatever else, it should really be fine. But don't blame me if it goes wrong! I have also steamed several other H garments.

You can also (hand) wash silks by the way. There is nothing fundamentally different with H fabrics compared to any other silk, cotton, cachemire or wool fabrics. But there's more than just the fabric to take into account.

For my stuff and that of DH, I generally follow instructions and ask my dry cleaner if they should dry clean or hand wash cottons (sparingly). I don’t trust myself to block items back into shape, iron, or steam. However, plenty of TPFers hand wash without issue. I’m just lazy and afraid, (not really joking lol ;)

Re advice, I’ve read to use a color catcher (like shout brand, necessary to prevent color bleeding); gentle cycle or hand wash, no agitation, rinsing gently. And dry flat. Some in the scarf thread blot gently between white towels.

Was anyone here recently looking for a large Kelly?

ETA: @Nikhil7286 , @docride is the forum expert on VN, barenia, box, and other heritage saddle leathers. @docride has also evened out the patina and luster and weatherproof my preowned VN. When new it’s the color of LV vache and susceptible to marks which is part of the charm. Many here post on the Lazarus thread for @docride opinion on prospective purchases
