Sooo irritated about this! I know my fellow Coachies will understand

While I think it is disgusting to have smoked around it and returned it, I do feel that if you aren't happy with something you've spent $100's on that you should be able to return it. Coach should also mark these items as USED instead of tossing them to the outlet, or back on the sales floor. Any bag that the tags have been cut on should be marked this way. A stamp on the creed or something.

If that girl wasn't sure about her purchase, she should have taken better care and not smoked around it.

You really think you a consumer should be able to buy an item, use it, potentially abuse it, and then change their mind and return it for a full refund?

Other than coach, I've seen this done to other things in other stores (such as clothes, shoes, etc). I think it is gross that stores turn a blind eye to this and just re-tag the items and put them back out on the floor to be sold. Haven't you ever seen a pair of shoes on display that look worn (the bottom all scuffed/dirty), or tried on clothes that reeked of body funk? I've encountered this several times, and I just cannot believe that some people just have no shame to return used items to the store.

Like the OP said, I dont know what is worse: the person returning the used items, or the store accepting said used items. I guess the moral of the story is we have to be careful what we buy.

If I've taken care of the item, yes, assuming it hasn't been an extended period of time. If it's been abused, drawn on, dirtied, smells like smoke, so on so forth then the store in question shouldn't accept the return, and shame on whoever tried to return it.

If I've had a handbag for a week that I spent $700 on, it's still clean/looks new, and I end up really not liking it, you bet I'll ask the SA's if they'll accept the return because I'm really not happy with my purchase. IMO it isn't any different than wearing the bag around your house, with your stuff in it, for a week. It can still get dirty, it can still get smelly, so on so forth.

As a business, bottom line, you want your customers to be happy (Aside from you know, making a profit). Happy customers means repeat business, and word-of-moth advertising. Not to mention fan-based forums like this one here that are awesome for advertising.

I've worked for Coach, and I know that if a customer throws enough of a hissy fit, or claims that they "barely used the bag and it just didnt work", the store will take it back, sometimes only for store credit, just to avoid a scene. Any bag that an associate believes has been used (at least at the store I was at) was immediately tagged to be sent out. The associates I worked with took pride in the bags and wouldn't sell anything used, especially if it smelled like smoke! I am guessing that the associates at the store that took the bag back wrinkled their noses as soon as she left and argued about who was going to handle it!

I think that's being abusive of their return policy, which clearly states they will happily accept returns of UNused merchandise. Testing out a bag, putting stuff in it, checking out how it looks in the mirror is one thing. You can do all of that and still leave the tag on and keep it in new condition. Once you wear it, however, and use it, then it is no longer UNused merchandise. There really isn't a grey area here. Most customers don't want to spend $700 dollars on a bag, under the guise that it's brand new and UNused, when you just returned it the day before after using it for a week. Coach needs to worry about those customers and word of mouth, moreso than the petulant customer who changes their mind after a week or sees a newer and prettier bag they want, stomps their foot, and demands to return for full value. The customer who is doing that is practicing some crappy ethics or lack thereof.

I agree. Even if it "looks new" you still USED it. I'm sure theres a lot of us on here that don't get to go to the Boutique on a regular basis. The fact that I wait for the PCE and as long as I like something I drive an hour away to buy that perfect bag, I shouldn't be sold something that someone else wasn't satisified with after they've been using it. I go out of my way to buy a BRAND NEW UNUSED BAG! Plain and simple. Listen, I love Coach's customer service. The SA's are sooo nice, and not pushy and those thank you cards they send in the mail are so cute. But with a couple bags I bought, I wondered if they were returns or even displays. I'm starting to think I should go to Macy's from now on and even though the SA's there aren't as friendly as Coach's, at least I can get a bag that's still wrapped up and brand new. Used bags belong on eBay,craigslist, or bonz, not an outlet or FP store.

If you put your stuff in it, carry it around, you're USING it. Just because something has a tag on it doesn't make it unused.

I'm not going to argue. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Trying a bag on in the store or in front of a mirror at home, putting your stuff in it, whether the tag is on it or not, doesn't make it used in the least bit.

Wearing the bag, and you know what that is, I'm sure, does make it used.

Like I said, it's black and white...no foggy areas. A person knows when they have used a bag and what their intentions are.

It sounds like you wear your bags, change your mind, and return them used, which is a clear violation of their return policies. You are not concerned about getting the "letter"?

Please explain the difference between using the bag, at home, around the house and using it else where. IMO, there is no difference. It is being USED either way.

And I never said that I did that. I said if I was unhappy with a purchase after a reasonable amount of time (like a week) that I would return it. I would also explain to the SA's the situation, which I know I mentioned above (asking the SA's to take it back). I would never return a bag that I used for an extended period of time, and pretend it to be new.

Please do not put words in my mouth, and please do not make assumptions about me, or my shopping habits or lack there of. You don't know me, and a few posts on a forum are no where near enough to be able to know anything for fact.

You advocate returning used merchandise, for goodness sake. Surely you aren't going to get all finger-pointy and morally indignant now, are you?

Just today I came home from work and told my husband I was unhappy with my Hippie because everything falls to the bottom and you have to take everything out to get to what you want - he said 'why don't you take it back' (it was my birthday present almost a year ago but I've only used it 20-25 times) and I said 'once you cut the tags, put your stuff in it and take it out of the house, it's used and you can't take it back!"

Using a bag even once and taking it back sounds like using a prom dress or wedding dress 'just once' and taking it back!

I advocate getting my money back for an expensive item I've had a week and aren't happy with. That's a MORE than reasonable desire, and if you can't understand than, then I'm sorry.

I'm also done arguing about it.

You need to go back and read your own posts. You clearly advocate returning USED merchandise if one changes their mind and hasn't abused said merchandise. You are just backpeddaling now.

I asked earlier but you didn't answer....aren't you afraid of getting the "letter"? Every poster on this forum who has received that letter probably had a smiling SA who accomodated them.
