So I placed a SO of a grey MOP Magic pendant. I put down a 30% deposit a few months back. It's now arrived and while it's incredibly gorgeous (highly iridescent, super lively), I don't LOVE it! I like it very much, but am not in love with it. It has a lot of greens, which I specified when I placed the order that I didn't want. Now, the SA says that they said they couldn't guarantee that - I've yet to go through my texts with the SA to see what was said. I also need to dig up the order form/ receipt given to me when I paid the 30% deposit, and see what it says. I also told my SA that I wanted it to match the grey MOP Magic motif in my Magic bracelet, which it doesn't. The pendant also flashes a lot of pinks & some purples (like an oil spill), whereas my Magic motif flashes a lot of yellows and oranges in addition to pinks but no purples (so it's more like a sunset).

So my Q now is: am I obliged to accept it and pay the remaining 70% or can I refuse it and use the 30% towards something else? Or do I stand to lose the 30% deposit if I walk away?

Appreciate any insight.

I don’t know if you have to keep it since I haven’t placed a SO. But I’d say likely not given the service I receive at other higher end stores. I once purchased a SO ring from a retailer that had been rejected by the buyer. They should adjust or accommodate to make sure you’re satisfied. This is the boutique experience.

I’d ask if they could send out your SO with your bracelet to get a closer match. The stone variation will not be exact but they could certainly try again. With the markup I’d expect to leave happy!

That's great to hear. Yes, I agree with you 100%.

I did send a video and lots of pics of my bracelet before. I was thinking that I should have sent the actual bracelet when I placed the SO. I'll try a second time, this time sending the actual bracelet. It's a great idea!

Thanks.

I should say hardly any purples. It's primarily yellows/golds with oranges, and some pinks, with just a few greens.

Have you told your SA yet how you feel about the piece? It’s really going to be the only way of finding out what your options are, as I think that the answer may be slightly different at different boutiques .

I am just guessing here, but I think the boutique won’t have a problem with you turning down the SO given that it will be easy to sell to someone else . A year ago I placed an SO for a different Magic pendant necklace and was told it would take 2 1/2 years. I initially declined the SO because of the estimated delivery time, but my SA said she would place it anyway because if I didn’t want it when it came in she would easily sell it to someone else .

Good luck!

You should not keep the piece if you are not 100% in love with it. I agree with others here that you should check with your SA to see what your options are, and also bring in your existing piece for them to match if they can remake it. I shop remotely with my wonderful SA and she said that, if I ever wanted to match a piece, she would want me to send my existing one to her to ensure that the match was perfect.

VCA seems to have great customer service so I would think that they would try to make this right for you and also use your deposit towards the reordered SO pendant. I’m sorry that you were disappointed. I was so thrilled when my Gmop bracelet arrived and I hope you get the pendant you’re envisioning soon!!

I think this is key. I have talked to my SA and so far this is what she's said: The piece cannot be forwarded to someone else in another boutique even if they like it (a few people have apparently expressed interest). I can't send it back to have another piece of grey MOP (matching/ closest to my Magic motif) inserted into the setting . She hasn't said anything about the 30% deposit. She's invited me to come into the boutique to have another look and decide then. My feeling is that it'd just be sent back and I'd better be able to use the 30% towards another piece (I'd be SUPER cheesed off if I couldn't!).

That's so cool of your SA. Did you end up accepting the SO?

Thank you. I agree that I shouldn't be obliged to take the piece if I am not 100% in love with it. I am going to the boutique on Friday and see how I feel about it. I've left a gap of about 2 weeks from the last visit. Let's see if I still feel the same....

I should have sent in my actual bracelet when I placed the SO. The SA and I thought a bunch of pics and videos would suffice. My friends think I am crazy to turn down this piece. It is incredibly gorgeous, very very lively (much more lively than my bracelet) with lots and lots and lots of flashes. It is just not of the same colouring as my existing Magic motif ...{{SIGH}}.

I love your grey MOP bracelets. I wish I felt the same about my pendant...you know that little flutter in your heart...

I hope VCA comes through and finds a solution that works for you. At a 30% premium for an SO I think the piece should be perfect to you.
I can see it being tricky to match a grey mop single motif - much harder than the non mop stones given the variance of colours. I am not sure I would risk sending it back to trying again since you could get a stone you like less.
Devils advocate but do you need the stone to match your bracelet if you like the stone? It sounds like a beautiful piece and that it would go beautifully with your other pieces.
Goodluck and keep us posted!

Thank you for your input. I've yet to go "visit" the bracelet again. May do it tomorrow.

I wish I'd thought it through more thoroughly prior to placing the order. I realise now that grey MOP is a tricky species. The SA has now told me that I wouldn't be able to send it back and have it replaced. So the only thing to do is to either accept it or reject it (and maybe I'd have to fight for the 30% deposit). Tbh, I keep flip-flopping back and forth. One minute I want it bec it's very beautiful and lively on its own. And then the next, I am like..ahhh...it doesn't match my bracelet. But then again, like you said, am I being unrealistic and too picky to want the pendant to match my bracelet?!

(The premium, when compared with the white MOP, is more like 40%. Ugh!).

I don't understand why they aren't able to sell it to another client if there is interest. Obviously they aren't putting it on the floor and it would be going to another well established client. Seems win win to me.

I don't understand that either, but that's what my SA has told me. I will ask her for more details when I see her.

Hopefully your SA will do the right thing by you since you are clearly valuable customer.

It sounds beautiful and my guess is only you will know that it doesn’t perfectly match your bracelet. But if you don’t like the look together that is what matters

Honestly so many of us would love the grey MOP and the magic is my favorite pendant style! Crazy for the SA not to put it on the floor. So short sighted to make you go through this instead of taking care of you by slowing another order AND making another customer happy in scoring an SO grey MOP!
