Sigh...I don't like my Birkin

Jemi:

I looked at this forum a lot before I decided I wanted a Gold/PH 30 Birkin. When I received the beautiful pre-owned bag, I felt it was too dainty and too close to the size of the Kelly. I am now selling the bag via a re-seller to finance my 35 gold/ph, which I absolutely LOVE. I especially love the squishy Clemence leather. All my other Hermes bags are stiff or semi-stiff leathers and I can't say enough about the soft casual feel of the Clemence. It really feels right, even with shorts and flip flops, like I wore is yesterday running errands in 90 degree Atlanta heat.

So I have the color/hardware choice right, but not the size or the leather type. Perhaps something very close to your original instincts with a few tweaks. I don't believe you "learn to love" a 5-figure ($) bag! You either love it or it has to go!

Daphne

Daphne, I hope I stumble across your bag as that is the specs I want, 30 in gold with PH!

Maybe I am bitter, but I hope the feet of your Birkin scratch that Bentley! LOL. Of course, only kidding, but DO be careful during your photo shoots.

How's that patina coming?

CastorNY,how nice of you to worry; and if you ever own a car;I promise I will worry about yours!

My patina is coming along quite nicely, thank you. I figure a few more years in the sun ought to do it?
Hopefully my wrinkles will all blend together by then?;)

Hi Jemi, I feel your pain. Really. Just want you to know that you're not the only one feeling like this. As much as I love Birkins (and everybody knows just how much I love them :))), sometimes I ended up with a purchase that I wasn't too happy about at the end. It happened to me several times, in fact. Sometimes it's because my impulsive tendencies got the better of me (as in, saw it on the shelf, buy it), or because I got an offer that I thought was too good to pass (as in, good price), or because I thought it looks good when I saw it on somebody else. My advice is to try to give it some more chance by taking it out and using it more often. It could be just a problem of getting used to carrying a birkin. However, if your heart keeps on saying that it's not love, then don't feel bad if you feel like you have to let it go. There's no worse feeling than trying to convince yourself that you're in love with a bag when you're not. Better sell it and use the funds to buy one that you really really love.

First, thank you all so much for your advice and thoughts on this - I appreciate it a whole lot!

Last night I loaded my stuff in the Birkin again. I am going to try using it for a week but I am not going to try and make myself love the bag. I want to see if I can figure out what it is about this Birkin I don't like and if it is something that is remedied by a different Birkin (bigger, other color, other leather) or if this is just not the style of bag for me at all.

Good luck trying it out! I agree, there's no reason to try to force yourself -- you shouldn't have to make an effort to love it.

I'm going through a similar process wondering if my Birkin is right for me now that I've transitioned to being a mom (and soon to be transitioning to being a SAHM.) I used to carry it to work, but running around with a diaper bag, I'm not so sure.

Good luck! If not, I agree with those that said not to force the issue. For that amount either you love it or you don't. I've seen stuff that was nice but then I see something else that makes me go WOW and there you go. Sometimes I don't know what will make me go wow until I actually run into it, you know? Hope that helps.

Size can make a difference, I did try a 40cm birkin and it looked like I was dragging a bag of potatoes so i went for a 30 and it is perfect, why don't you go and try other sizes and see how you feel?

I went up to SF yesterday & went by Hermes. I dropped my Kelly off to have a new strap made. I carried the Birkin with me all day....and by late afternoon I was looking for a purse to buy so I could put the Birkin in the trunk of my car. Yes I disliked carrying it that much. I just could not get comfortable carrying it and in fact at some points it was down right uncomfortable to carry. So disappointing!

The good news in all of this - I have found out I am NOT a "hand carry only" bag kind of girl. The Birkin did not feel comfortable on my arm either because the handles are SO stiff (but that could be because it is box). Lesson learned - I do better with bags that I can carry comfortably on my arm, up high on the shoulder and under the arm or just an outright shoulder bag.

Looks like I will be sticking to Kellys from here on out. I wanted to try out a Constance, Picotin or Evelyne but unfortunately they did not have any.
