Do you guys wear plume with an extra long strap? I think the handles are long enough to be wore on shoulder. Just wonder any upside of adding the long strap?

So yes, you can technically wear the Plume on the shoulder but it it is a tight fit. With a coat, blazer or leather jacket it is not really comfortable if at all possible for me (and I am more on the petite side). Plus, when carried like that you loose mobility in your arm and the inside of the bag is not accessible. The added strap allows you to quickly hang it from the shoulder if there is a need to go hands free.
Say you are at the cashier in the supermarket, putting groceries in bags while looking for your card to pay and answering a phone call. Carrying the bag on the shoulder by its handles just doesn’t work in this situation, but if you can hang it from the strap it is a relief. That is what I use the strap for, otherwise I mostly carry the bag in the hand/crook of the arm. To me, the Plume is designed as a hand held bag and to have any other expectation on it would lead to frustration.

I remember in the early 90's wanting to buy a canvas strap for my Plume at FSH: the SA wouldn't sell it to me because she said the Plume doesn't have a shoulder strap and hooked on the handle rings would damage the bag. I insisted but she was adamant. In the end I said it was for a Kelly so I got it:angel:

Of course I've always used it on my Plume without a problem!

I always find it interesting when SAs caution us against damaging a bag ... these are the same SAs who sell H based on its quality and durability. Sometimes I suspect they are purists who want us to wear a bag the way it’s “intended” to be worn, and they use potential damage as a way of getting us to do that ... or to get us to buy a true shoulder bag instead of altering a bag we already own.

I just bought 2 of the 50MM canvas straps for my PM Evies while traveling in London and the SA told me these straps were not meant to be used on Evies because the handle rings on Evies were not strong enough to take these new straps. He then said these new straps are really meant to only be used on Bolides, kellys and plumes. I’m not sure what to believe any more :confused1:

When I see Lakis' Plumes, it does look like he doesn't mind abusing them slightly. They are probably his knockabouts. They're often pictured overstuffed, carried open with a strap etc. I think the SAs are prob correct though. A 28 or Elan could take a strap so long as the bag's not full with bricks or books but I'm not sure about a 32 fully loaded. That's a lot of weight swishing up against one side of the handle if used for a long time. Just occasionally used when needed a hands-free moment it's not going to kill the bag but different designs work different ways. Everyone should use their own bag the way they want, get the most out of their bag but personally, my Plumes are my pride and joy and rather not risk it I paid as much for one of mine as a Birkin. In fact new Plumes (post-2014) are rarer than Birkins (although I espied a few more 32s on h.com recently).

Maybe she was talking about the mini Plumes, which have extra rings for the strap? I don't think they would recommend a strap for the standard Plumes. I don't feel the strap causes any damage to mine, but if it were carried by the strap full to the brim the whole time, I don’t think it would be good...
