Scoring a Birkin in US

Well, will try again.
Have seen Birkins on the shelf at VA H, not recently but over the last few years at least 3-4. And at least that many Kellys over the same time frame. And I don't go in all that often. When I can, I stop in. Love the store. Love the staff. They always seem busy and everyone seems friendly and kind.
Always think it is worth a visit to see the silks, RTW, home goods and of course the bags and SLGs.
Hermes sells more than just Birkins and Kellys.

TT, yes, I enjoy a store visit there too. The staff is friendly. They have tried to get what I wanted for the most part. The manager has tried to be responsive. I just want to get more stuff there and knowing what's available or could be made available is sometimes difficult. You are right, it's not all about birkins & kellys, it's about follow-through for smaller, less costly items that is what will keep me coming back to the store. As one example, I haven't seen the Marcelina yet but have expressed interest in it. I think the SA attitude may be that if I'm not clearly going to purchase it they will not follow-through. The SA's probably get a zillion requests to snag & hold particular scarves and I am just one of many.

It may also be that there is a limited amount of desirable inventory and they have to spread it among a bunch of customers so I get access to some things but not others. If that's the case, then I have to accept a certain amount of frustration from them. They are not a mass marketer, the prestige for their stuff is associated with scarcity. The SA's are probably trained to keep up the scarcity mystique, not make stuff too readily available. That is probably why I have never been initiated into the secret handshake! From reading tPF posts, I have learned to appreciate the extra access resellers provide, altho I haven't used one yet. When push comes to shove, using a reseller may be the solution.

I know there are conflicting views on this, so I should probably stay out of the fray, but I used to live in DC and now live in NY, so am familiar with all four stores (Virginia, NM, WS, and Madison). Virginia is a nice store but no birkins unless you are super-duper established customer who spends mega bucks (5 figures) a year there. Certainly, no birkins for a walk in. As for NM, they will try, but they dont get great inventory. Unlikely to get a birkin there either, at least not without a long wait (months). WS - very nice store, very low inventory. Not impossible to get a birkin as walk in, but I think at this very point in time, unlikely. Madison - nice store, more formal than the other three; has lots of inventory. Its possible that you might get a birkin but difficult if that is the only thing you are going to buy.

Just my opinion, others may disagree with some or all of this.

JEDI, you know what you are talking about and I totally agree.

In the past year, I've been fortunate enough to be offered four birkins (Pink 35 w/GHW, Rouge H 30 with GHW, Violet 30 w/GHW and 30 Mykonos Eclat) at Tysons.

I agree with BBL. I got my SO black birkin in NYC--and it was being in the right place at the right time. In my experience, the Tysons store staff is first rate, too. If they have it, they'll show it to you. I can recommend some SAs there (and Madison Avenue) too. Perhaps you can call ahead of time.

Call ahead... Sounds like a good idea. It would be nice if you recommend some SAs. At least I won't be "blind" when I enter the store!

Wow does that mean that scoring a Birkin requires you to get other stuff from the store as well? That sounds like Chanel to me. Haha. I remembered how I scored my Mini. Because my mom was a frequent customer, I was allowed to snag that bag (they said that they had no stock to me, a couple of times) :)

Chanel in USA is not like that. I can get it as long as they have it in stock. This store don't have, another will. Never had problem getting any Chanel.

Sigh. I think this will apply to Hermes. I'm reading some other threads and I realized the fact that you will have to buy something in order to get the Birkin. Well, I guess I have to tell my mom that. I'm sure she will buy something, like the Garden Party bag. Also, I'm in need of a new wallet. Anyone can tell me which wallets by Hermes are nice? Is the craftmanship as good as their bags?

The reality is : Hermes won't sell just anyone a Birkin. I would encourage you to foster a relationship with a sells associate. I visited my local Hermes every month on a particular day. I expressed interest in the brand. On my second trip, I expressed interest in a birkin. My fourth trip, I walked out with a Birkin. Granted, I did spend money on each trip, but now I am an "in". If decide not to go that route, I'd suggest a third party.

Thank you for the vote of confidence for Tysons. For some reasons, that store has a bum reputation. There are/were some scary SAs, but you have to get to know them.
I have found some beautiful things there that were not Birkins nor Kellys. I am actually bagged out I think. But, I have been treated with respect by everybody in the store as I do them. You know, a little smile or a bit of friendliness towards the guards, the SAs, etc., when you walk in the door is the done thing. It's amazing to me that everybody knows your name in that store. And, I am not a VIP by any means.
Remember, they can smell fear, LOL!!

Hi Balto Bag Lady, I am going to the DC in August and planning to go to Tysons. Could you recommend any SAs for a non VVIP member like me? Thank you so much dear! :smile1:

hey ladies,

I'm new to this forum too, will be heading to San Francisco, any chance I might score a birkin there? any personal experience and most importantly, any nice SA to refer to?

thanks in advance for the advice! :D

My SA in SF is also one of the managers. His name is Tony and off course, he's fabulous!!!!

My mom just came to Melbourne not too long ago and she was told by a SA in KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) that you have to be prepared to spend in order to buy your way to a Birkin. Aish, the road to a Birkin is not easy.

With this in mind, she bought herself a Bearn Etoupe in the Melbourne Store. Apparently, IT WORKS the same way in Melbourne too. Buy something, accumulate "points", get the bag.

Buying something from the Hermes store means that you have interest for the brand... oh well. I've decided to drop the hunt in US and focus on Melbourne instead. It's pricier but because of the 10 percent VAT, I'm not complaining. :) But still, I hope that i can get something off the shelves. :)

Has anyone experienced by getting the birkin off the shelves?

I think Megan in the SF store is fantastic. Very knowledgeable and extraordinarily helpful. I rarely see Birkins in-store.
