I store mine in their boxes. I label the back of the boxes with a removable label and keep them in alphabetical order. But I have a good memory or the system would not work.

I used to do this too unti the boxes became towers and taking one box out often meant the others came tumbling down. Also, a tip passed to me by my SA who said the scarves shouldn't be kept in boxes - only store brand new for newly washed/cleaned scarves this way. You may want to leave your scarves in a current rotation out before cleaning and storing again.

Wait why???

Prob the reason why you shouldn't put anything away unless totally clean is bacteria multiplies and even the smallest amount of skin odour will attract moths. As I said, I think it's fine if they are new or freshly clean. Silk is a protein so the air should circulate around. You could fold them in cotton or linen bags and hang them up if you don't like the idea of them just threaded through a scarf hanger or all the room is open sunshine for long periods of the day (sunlight will weaken fibre as well as fade dyes). .

I use divider sell at IKEA to organize my scarves.

If I recall correctly, your collection has been growing quickly, I hope you have spare dividees ready to go :)

Yep, you are correct. Same reason as to why woolen / cashmere / fur winter items should not be put away for summer storage without being cleaned first. Leftover humidity, stains etc can damage fabric long term and attract pests. It’s also harder to notice if a scarf is having issues when things are away in boxes as well.

Having said that, if someone has, say, twenty scarves, and rotates through them regularly, or checks contents of boxes and makes sure everything is always clean, boxes should be fine. I would not be able to pull it off personally since I would risk death by boxes should they topple over.

I may have mentioned how I store mine, but happy to share again for newcomers as an extra data point. I fold scarves and store them overlapping in a drawer, similar to how most Hermes stores do it. I color code them by drawers. I have a red one, a pink / orange one, a blue / green one and so forth. I just started a new drawer — that was the last available one, but hopefully there is enough room to last me a long time. Since I have so many I cannot physically wear them all, I do take them out and refold them now and then so that the folds don’t set, to check for any issues, and to expose them to some fresh air. It’s a fun chore.

I line the drawers with acid free paper — most of the time I get it from Hermes bag boxes or other boxes (I think they make drawer liners, but I usually have enough on hand). I just asked for some at the boutique and now have enough to reline all my drawers.

I also like using Dyptique’s car freshener’s refills to keep in drawers. I get a huge kick of having a ginger one for orange scarves, a fig one for green / blue scarves, a rose one for red ones, and so forth. It’s not a strong scent.I pondered whether it would produce anything that would damage the scarves in the long run, but then decided life is too short to obsess over every detail...

Ooooohhhh, nice!
I haven’t found “drawer liners” I like, so I use the tissue from the H boxes and a lavender sachet in a drawer corner under the tissue.
Less serious thought: We should all be challenged to drop (a photo of) our drawers here!
This was fun, Rhl2987, like going through my Nannie’s makeup table as a kid.
I’d personally love to see a couple folks from SOTD thread and their elevator-serviced skyscrapers of scarf storage. :hbeat:
