Today I want to celebrate -ologies ; the Scientific fields, the arenas of Beautiful Nerds who dig themselves into one single subject and only rarely come up for air.

We do know the Big sciences Biology, Geography, Geology, chemistry, physics etc and they certainly have scarf designs to remind us of them (I am still looking for the perfect Mineraux and Geologie), and the field opens even more up with alchemy, astronomy, ecology, entomology, meterology, not to forget oceanography, hippology and mixology! Earlier this week @EtsyBoss gave us a Grand tour of scarf primatology and many others of you lovely people have also shared botany and zoology already.

I will just begin the parade today with mineralogy in La Vallee Cristal (cryptozoology represented by the unicorn)

and volcanology from Nothing but a Dreamer (the scarf that does for this theme what Animapolis does for every other theme)

View attachment 5931508

and the human with it’s head in a cloud from Sur mon Nuage - certainly a nephologist! And it happens in a cloud shaped like a sea shell - this calls for a conchologist!

View attachment 5931512

And we could all be considered ornithologists just by looking at birds on scarves!!

So please bring out your periodic systems, your constallations, your world maps and your cloud maps. And find the scientists, the spectators, the experts, the collectors and the recorders of details looking up to the sky, into the microscope and under the surface to study and describe it all.

I wish you a most nerdy day!
Another wonderful sub-theme for your week of hosting @HermesEchidna! I appreciate so much your insights, humor and observations and your beautiful illustrattions in silk!

For today’s theme offering I’m going with Carnival des Animaux… hear me out.

The story behind the scarf is that its inspired by Camille Saint-Saens’ musical score, but I can’t look at it without thinking of The Lion King and the iconic Circle of Life opening sequence.

Lion King:
IMG_9158.jpeg

A movie is of course typically more of an example of art than science, but The Lion King was a technical achievement as well, using computers to support the animation in ways that previously had not been employed before. STEM skills were certainly involved in creating the masterful stampede scene. Apparently a few distinct wildebeasts were designed using a 3D program, and then multiplied into hundreds, manipulated to look like animation using cel shading, and sent down the mountain using randomized paths. All in all the 2.5 minute sequence took two years to create!

And our own baby lion, who we often hold up and sing Circle of Life to (much to her chagrin):

I love it! (Both scarf, the insight And the baby lion). And happy to be scarf sister and not alone in associating the cliff on the scarf with the Lion King scene :giggle:
Both zoology and Biology and ecology are at play here. But the great animators should perhaps have consulted geography as the African circle of life in the movie also features a giant anteater - which is native to South America ;)

My SOTD can definitely fit within the STEM theme!
Claudia Stuhlhofer-Maier constructed her design [Tohu Bohu] on the principle of the mandala – a geometric diagram used for meditation and invoking the gods. Its colours and concentric circles symbolize the structure of the universe. This scarf is a mandala for the god, Hermés. (from Hermes story)
Mandalas are also rich in mathematics: they employ circle geometry and other geometric theories and the tools of geometry (protractors and compasses) are used in their design and construction. But @HermesEchidna also challenged us today to think of the "ologists". Hmmm. I put on my thinking cap and made the connection that a mandala is also a game (my kids loved it and it is still in the game cupboard here) and what do we call those who study game theory? Ludologists! Yes, Scarflandia, there is a word: Game studies, also known as ludology is the study of games, the act of playing them, and the players and cultures surrounding them. (wikipedia) So perhaps we also can be called Hermesologists as we expand our knowledge through fun and games as we study our scarves?

As a small child I loved to hunt for pretty rocks in the gravel at my local playground. In amongst the bits of granite I would sometimes find some smoky or rose quartz for my small rock collection. Years later we took our children on vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota. During our visit the rural B&B where we were staying got a new load of gravel put on the driveway, and wow, did it sparkle! Closer investigation revealed rocks with sheets of mica in the gravel. This soft, translucent, shimmery mineral is often used in cosmetics to give a bit of sparkle to your lipstick or face powder. We collected a few nice mica specimens for the kids' rock collections.

I did not go into mineralogy as an adult, but I still love pretty stones. Even today I sometimes find agates along the shores of local lakes. I'm wearing Mineraux today, along with an amethyst pendant, which is a favorite among my quartz jewelry,

Love the entire look! Perfection! I realized something on my last boutique trip. I can NOT follow in some of your amazing colors. I wlll have to just be smitten seeing these looks on you  . But so glad I can steal some colors from your wheelhouse

Love these happy colors.
Thank you, Nomad!
Beautiful coloration on this lovely soft cw @Nomad!

I hope that you will soon be feeling as marvelous as you look @Cookiefiend!

Feel better soon @Teaforparrots-- this is a wonderful design and color!

A great story and great choice of silks to illustrate it @mktlim!

Its beautiful on you @Jereni!

Yes and what a marvelous cw you chose @Agrume! It looks wonderful on you-- I hope you are enjoying it!

Stunning Petit Duc @Awillow!

Well that is a piece of silk folding magic for sure @labelo! I don't think you could possibly have planned it! Looks great, too.

I think this scarf can do no wrong @MabelJo-- I chose it for the exact same reasons you did. When we were children my mother always sought out gardens on our travels-- at the time we sometimes complained but for all of us the habit took hold on our own travels, as for you...

This is such a delicious cw for this charmer @Croisette7!

Thank you @Croisette7, @bunnycat, @Living.la.vida.fifi, @Jereni, @Maedi and @Mebeljo (and @Nomad-- lost your quote) for your very kind compliments on Jardin de Leila au Bloc! And @textilegirl -- I do in fact have three LE designs which each have particular meaning to the places I live: Battery Park (I lived and worked in NYC for 40+ years); New Orleans Creole Jazz for a city I have a long family connection to and spend winters there, and Salt Marsh, as we live on a salt marsh on Cape Cod Bay! They are special indeed to me. Thank you for the comment.
Thank you, LKB!
Thanks for the sweet comments. I will catch up later. In the meantime, sticking with the same theme, I am headed off to the office in Petit Duc.View attachment 5931630

It’s snowing and that means I dress rough, too rough for scarves.
Archive of Les Ailes.
A Personal stem related scarf. The father of my children has a stem career. During our courting phase in college, he would invite me to go out, at night, and hunt for bugs of all kinds, including moths. He would have to collect and study them. So I can either wear this scarf and think of our hunting death days   Orrrr the much more acceptable thoughts of this being for science!
View attachment 5931098

Oh, such a great colorway! I'm not a big fan of moths, but this ties beautifully.

On the topic of scientifically-focused students, my mother once went on a college date with a guy. Walking across campus, she looked up at the sky, sighed romantically, and said, "isn't it a lovely night?" At which point he stopped walking, said, "oh my gosh - I'm missing my astronomy lecture!" and ran off, leaving her alone on the quad.

Reader, she married him.

In honor of my destined-nerdiness and the science of astronomy, archive shots of Hemispharium Coeli Boreale and Feux du Ciel:

I’m so jealous - I love that design but could not find a colorway that works for me!

A so so short post. As You all say…finally! 🤣. It would be much shorter without the science tie to theme  .

Appaloosa. A go-to of mine. A horse scarf ( like this gorgeous breed) will sometimes remind me of humans involvement in the reproduction of horse breeds, and our need and business practice to carry a horse’s pedigree through its progeny.
A veterinary reproductive specialist, is also called a theriogenologist ( thanks internet)
I am blinded by blazing sunlight off all the ice and snow

That’s a really cool choice for the theme! Love it. And what an absolutely gorgeous shade of blue.

SOTD was Versailles, with its geometric figures, as already shown by others. Have a good evening!
