For old and new, I think I am just going to nod sagely and say, "What @xincinsin said." Such great connections drawn between the older and our newer silks. It seems that when it comes to scarf design, the house of Hermes also follows Ezra Pound's modernist imperative to "Make it New." I have a fun example from this past season: Ugo Bienvenu's double faced design Les Mustangs II, which pays homage and reinvents Robert Dallet's iconic design. From The Story Behind on the website:
"We’ve seen any number of galloping mustangs—in books, films and even on scarves, since 1993, when Robert Dallet let loose this astonishing cavalcade worthy of the most beautiful westerns. On Les Mustangs II, a futuristic reinterpretation by Ugo Bienvenu, they charge across a plain with the courage of an army, as if their modern armor could protect them from every danger. Their robust bodies are covered in metal, from the forehead to neck, shoulder to withers, giving them magical superpowers. Like a cartoon drawn from the young illustrator’s imagination."
I have a bandana version of the Dallet and the recent 90 (thumbnails below). I am pretty sure that @Redbirdhermes and @Karenska have Dallet's original design in the 90 twill, so I hope those will make an appearance too!

So beautiful, all, and I adore your camel shortsleeved sweater and the grey-blue long sleeved one, Lkb.
Thank you LKB ... your green/yellow one is a beauty too. I have some more Peuples and will dig in my archive ... I love the design so much.

All so fabulous, it‘s worth another week.
Thank you @Karenska, @Croisette7 and @Snausages! We could indeed do a whole week on bi-color and changing borders and hems!

These are all great @Croisette7 and I love the earrings with the Belles and the brooch and cuff with Fleurs d'Indiennes. I just became your sister on the lovely Jeu de Cartes-- this blue is magnificent!
All those wonderful hems and borders! Keep them coming because they can apply to this week's theme too!

Something Old, Something New

Explore vintage vs new designs which share similar themes

One of my birthyear scarves is Promenades de Paris. I was tempted to find one, but my birthyear has several designs I like and this one is still in my Maybe-Someday list. When H re-issued it a few years ago, it was updated as a 70 with a delightful striped hem.

Similarly, the dashshund scarf Les Teckels was given the update treatment. The cws were modernized, a bicolour border and a striped hem added, and even the name changed to Les Bassets.
The original issue:

Les Pivoines is one of my favourite designs. The showy blooms spill out from a basket to fill the scarf in this vintage design.
View attachment 5692394
The flower's appearance in L'Ombre des Pivoines is equally showy but reinterpreted as dreamlike and ethereal.
View attachment 5692413
View attachment 5692414
Dreams - a common theme in H scarves. Nuees Imaginaires illustrates a delightful collection of fantasy animals.
View attachment 5692415
The fairly ordered dream descends into chaos in the amazing Nothing But a Dreamer which plays with both subject and perspective.

Take a look at your scarves. Do you see differences in the way a vintage design and a recent design treat the same subject? How does H update and change perennial favourites like Ex Libris and Brides de Gala? Come share with us your discoveries!
Thank you for this great intro full of amazing observations and connections @xincinsin -- always food for thought and so much to discover! Thank you for getting us started on the journey.
The Mors-- both of them-- make me so happy. Beautiful both @Croisette7!
Thank you for hosting hems and borders week, @Karenska , and welcome, @xincinsin , to old and new week.

Here are two scarves, both with large spotted cats and bright blue hems.

Robert Dallet's Panthera Pardus is from a painting done in a naturalistic style, while Baobab Cat from Ardmore Artists has a distinctly modern, rather cartoonish vibe. I've tied them on this morning wearing the same outfit and showing bits of the head of each cat. I think the most striking difference is the bright colors of Baobab Cat, versus the muted tones of Panthera Pardus.

I love both scarves and am delighted to show them both for my Scarves of the Day.
I just knew that I would be lost in admiration of your posts this week @Redbirdhermes right of the bat you nailed it for me! This is a great comparison and love your styling to showcase the two...

Such lovely spring-like colors on both @Croisette7 ...Do you prefer with or without the basket?
So true about the changing border color. Great thinking. These are all gorgeous examples. I love your Regarde look. The burgundy strip is so striking on a soft beauty
Thank you @Nomad-- that Regarde has very luminous borders...
A plumet is a bouquet of feathers used to decorate military headgear, including, of course, that of the cavalry. Given Hermes' penchant for all things equestrian, it's no wonder there was a plumet scarf, in 1989: Julie Abadie's "Casques et Plumets". You can see an image here. It's a busy busy scarf. The preponderance of mustard tones and the random leopard print background (why??) make this look rather dated, I would say! It does however capture the opulent plumets beautifully. (I don't own this scarf, in case that's not clear.)

We can compare this with the spring/summer 2022 scarf "Plumets et Panaches" - a much more modern plumet scarf with bright colors and a plain white background to make them stand out. It does have a polka dot overlay which is about as distracting as the leopard print of the older one! But I like the polka dots when worn. They give the classic subject matter a fresh, irreverent touch.

Oops, sorry! The selected item is no longer available.
That's okay, I got it. Whoever knew how to host this marvel, please let me know.
When I saw the theme of the week, I told myself that I wouldn't have much to show and that I'd mostly be looking at yours. What I love about this forum is that it makes me reconsider my collection. I still have a few odds and ends for this week. I'll survive.
To start, an iconic piece: Brides de gala. If any scarf has been revisited, it's this one.

View attachment 5692524For a long time I thought I couldn't be a true H collector without one. But its wide edge and ultra classic design intimidated me.View attachment 5692522View attachment 5692523
And then, the En finesse version made me fall in love with it. View attachment 5692525View attachment 5692526So, when it comes to the future, I really like the shawl version (I think these colours would suit me well) or Brides and Destinies...
View attachment 5692529View attachment 5692530Here we go again!
Fantastic post @Coco2606-- I really enjoyed all your examples and I plead guilty to being that rare scarfie who likes and collects new BdG iterations happily! Sisters on the gorgeous finesse. I am sure I will be posting my own Brides de Gala collage this week so thatn you for the inspiration!
We all know what the original Brides de Gala looks like... I am very partial to the modern reinterpretation Brides de Gala Shadow from a few years back, which I own both in gavroche and 90 format. Blurring the details and using bright colors gives this design a poppy, almost pyschedelic makeover, which fits much better with my casual wardrobe than the super classic original design.

Love this @ajaxbreaker -- I have only the 90 in the shadow version but it is the cw of your gav-- I love it! And yes I agree that this is a fun and funky version of what y grandson calls "the astronaut scarf"! Love love love your first mod shot. Wow!
This should be a really fun week, and one where I am already amazed by all the various ways of thinking of this theme.

At first, I thought well...hmmm....I mostly don't do the vintage scarves, sticking to modern designs these days. But after I got this scarf in I quickly noted a few things. (I also posted my ruminations in the 2023 seasonal thread.)

Here is Ugo Bienvenu's fab Rendezvous Galant, which I noted as soon as I got it in and unfolded it had flying birds and monkeys in the corner which immediately reminded me of Dallet's nature compositions. Then similarity after similarity hit me with MORE animals hidden in the foliage, the circular nature of the foliage itself as a round frame or surround, much like Dallet would do, around a central theme. In this case, the romantic pair (Jungle Love anyone?) in the center of the frame surrounded by all the many other animals. And as it was noted when we discussed it in the seasonal thread- they are mainly in pairs too!

So I feel like this scarf is a nod and update of more traditional nature theme's from past favorite and popular greats such as Jungle Love, Equateur, Treve de l'Eau and even Flamingo Party.

This is great @bunnycat and I followed the discussion on the other thread. I believe the connection is there and we can also note that Bienvenu did the Mustangs II reinterpretation/homage just the season prior so there's another Dallet connection! Your Rendez-vous is gorgeous, by the way and has one of the most spectacular blue floral corners ever done and set of by the amazing yellow hem... :ps:

Loving all of these photos @bunnycat! Especially Mr. Pickles in that perfect setting!
Thank you Cedar! Sir Pickles accepts all admiration with a benevolent nod of his head. But....he is also been known to sit like this too... He and his (much more petite) sister Snickers are right at 10 months old now.

This is the colorway I finally decided on and of course it’s no longer online right now. Such a fantastic yellow hem.

Beautiful finesse @Coco2606 and I also love the evolutions of this design

Another great BdG and excellent comparison of Plumets @ajaxbreaker

What a fabulous collex @AnnaE - I must try WS with a burgundy top! And wow the blue pattern mixing

Perfect scarf ring @Teaforparrots

Glurg I’ve been looking for this colorway - it’s divine @bunnycat and great comparison to Dallet
It's early days and I know y'all will find it @MAGJES and @Snausages ! Can't wait to be twins! (Errr--- triplets...)

I do recall and I think we are all on to something.... I must admit that blue corner is really pretty spectacular and again, that added yellow of the hem really makes the scarf just like the added yellow in the Cheval Vague I have made that one too.

OMG Pickles is so fluffy! Current kitty-in-residence Table keeps giving me the side-eye, so I don't think she will be amenable to modelling a scarf yet (or ever...)
Seen here enjoying the newest grocery box :giggle:

Oh yes! Great examples. I am in love with your purple border kuna. Stunning. I still remember your kuna twilly and how dramatic and beautiful that is

This entire parade….wowza. I am in love w your changeant. I never see this one. And the blue Cartes is gorgeous. This design is on my list due to the hundreds of hours I spent with my grandmother playing cards. Never can choose a cw. This might be it. The soft white look is stunning. And the peuple parade!! Must resist!!!!

I can tell the design in this plisse which is so cool! And the ring

Amazing examples. I didn’t even think of pivoines. You are really good! I also didn’t realize you loved that design. I absolutely love my one too.

Brilliant analysis. The pearl w the tight tie is perfection!

I hear you in the intimidating. Fully am with you. Funny how we have this instinctual thoughts and feelings about scarf designs. I am so glad you found your “one”. It is an inspired retake on the classic. I went with the heart gavs for my take ( before the marble haha). There is certainly one for everyone in this design. And so happy to be twins on marble!

Ok wow! Just wow! These are stunning autumn winter colors. And how the green highlights the border :faint:

Love shadow. Such an awesome take on the design.
Thank you Nomad ... of course you need a Jeu de Cartes!

These peuples are gorgeous Croisette. We are twins on the 2nd and 3rd one. I long for that first one!

STunning Karenska! I especially love the Mustangs bandana.

Thanks so much Thelittlefoxes!
Thank you MAGJES!
What a beautiful match in the 1st photo. The peach sweater with the sweetest of colors Tohu Bohu 90.

I LOVE that CSGM Tohu Bohu - insanely gorgeous. I am still kicking myself for re-homing this colorway of Les Alies.
Rehoming that Ailes was a mistake IMO.

Another great example for this week is Couvertures et Tenues de Jour. It showcases 10 horses in a grid, each covered with a different blanket of varying patterns. You can see a picture of the original issue from 1962 here. A true classic, it has since been reinvented multiple times in different formats.

I own two modern reinterpretations of this design. One is the straightforward bandana CSGM version. The bandana motifs give the classic equestrian scarf a fresh new edge. The design is simplified down to a minimalist 2-3 colors. And I love the bright red contrast hem of my CW - it was the reason I bought it. (From what I know, contrast hems are modern, yes? Most classic designs I've seen had hems that were the same color as the border.)
1673866918998.png

20200919_205954.jpg

I also have another interpretation of this classic design. Although i have never seen anything online to confirm this, I'm pretty sure Gianpaolo Pagni used Couvertures as his inspiration when he created Garde-Robe Pop, which features a similar array of horses in a grid covered in blankets of varying patterns. He omitted the central medallion, which to me is a rather dated design element. This helps draw the focus to the patterns of the blankets, which are echoed in the stripes and polka dots in the background. A perfectly modern, pop art reimagining of the classic scarf!

Just going to sneak in with a last post of another type of border-- the changing border! @MAGJES showed CSGM Botanica Grafica, which is one example and here are some others, including my own Botanica Grafica. You can see how the frame border changes color from side to side... (I believe @Redbirdhermes' noted that Au Coin du Feu also has a changeable hem?) Other examples?
