~~~~ Scarves with dancers ~~~~
Dancers and dance-related themes appear in many H scarves. There is a multidisciplinary field of study "Ethnochoreology" which studies the role of dance in social and cultural history. Dances can be sombre religious celebrations or intimidating war rituals or enticing courtship displays. They can range from the delicacy of ballet to the flexibility of street dance to the drama of native dances. Dancing can be more than earthbound. You could term the gymnastics of Cirque de Soleil a dance, or say the same about synchronized swimming.
My favourite dance scarf is Les Danses des Indiens. There is a vibrancy about the image that makes it almost 3D for me.
In 2012, H did a series of 50s-inspired American sock hop parties around the world. The scarf released for those events was Swinging Silk. I like the neon rings round the dancing couple. This is a recent buy and I haven't even worn it yet. In my fave size 70cm.
Acte III is based on Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. This play was also the inspiration for George Balanchine's first full-length ballet. There is a film of the performance, recorded in the mid-60s. I watched it at one of the many film festivals I frequented in my youth. Fairies are a perfect subject to transplant from drama to dance.
And now for a more metaphysical interpretation of dance. One of the aspects of the Hindu god Shiva is Nataraja or Lord of the Dance. His celestial dance encompasses creation, destruction and all that happens in between. While Shiva has not appeared on H scarves, I like to think Mr Bones in C'est La Fete embodies much of the metaphysics of the dance of life and death. This thread explores the symbolism in the design and I'm looking forward to the next incarnation of Mr Bones in SS20.
"Dance" is a very evocative word. It calls to mind symmetry and grace. We use dance-associated words to refer to flowers and leaves twirling in the wind and the elegant swoop of birds in the air. And in many an H scarf, horses are prancing in a dance choreographed by nature and augmented by humans. This is Ballet Equestre.
Amazing intro xincinsin! I love that you take the time to give us a bit of a lesson/explanation each time -and - help us come up with some ideas for the week! So helpful because I thought I might have any!
Dancing Pearls! Love!!! :girlsigh:
Really fantastic intro xcs! So many spectacular scarves! :dothewave:
Gorgeous scarves Croisette! Particularly love that pink Dance du Cosmos!
Speaking of Les Ballets Russes, as some here may know, George Balanchine was a dancer and choreographer with Diaghilev’s company in the 1920s and created two of his most iconic works during that time - Apollo and Prodigal Son.
Does anyone know the significance of the cross in this scarf? This cw is my particular favorite.
Calling @marietouchet !
@Karenska — There is also an Hermes Reference Library, and a scarf Identification thread to browse. You can search the title of the scarf in any thread to see if drops of wisdom have been shared.
All so gorgeous, Croisette! I love all your dance scarves!
Thank you for bringing up Balanchine’s (and the New York City Ballet’s) exquisite and witty rendering of Shakespeare’s masterpiece and tying it in with La Clairiere. It’s a beautiful ballet and one of my favorites, bar none. It’s the reason why I felt I could (at the time) splurge on a brand new Act III at H.com as a pre-retirement gift to myself (before it ran out!). Prior to then I’d only bought pre-loved on ebay. It’s one of my very favorite scarves, not the least because of this ballet. I’ll post mine later.
As for the 1966 film, which is no longer in print of any sort, clips of it may be found on YouTube, if you are interested. Off topic, what a time that was for the NYCB!
And what a beautiful introduction to this week’s theme, xincinsin. From your photos, it looks like you have two or three cws of Act III? Or is it how you tied them? I find I can change the look very easily with this this particular scarf depending on how I tie it. So much going on with it.
I have three cws of Acte III, Karenska. Almost bought a 4th (@papertiger's red cw) but after trying it on 4 times on 4 separate visits, I had to declare defeat and admit that it just wasn't me :sad:
I've watched the Balanchine 1966 film, scratchy and bad sound, probably 30 years ago. Have to admit that I'm more of a Vic-Wells fan. My fascination with Mythiques Phoenix has some of its roots in Margot Fonteyn's Firebird. And to bring the subject back to H scarves, Fonteyn was coached in that role by Tamara Karsavina who first performed the Fokine ballet when she was with Les Ballets Russes!
Shhh... Cookie, I have to be inventive - I have 2 left feet and not that many dance scarves :angel: Just call me Scarf Nerd :smartass:
Thanks so much, cincinsin. I love many of Act III’s cws and my first choice was the purple black with the red hem, but I couldn’t get it. Still, I adore the cw I have. It works well with my wardrobe, has some violet in it, and is overall so very pretty and lush with all that green.
Thanks for the ballet comments. My first ballet experiences were NYCB and I am a devotee, for sure. But I love all ballet and the Vic-Wells/Sadler-Wells history is very fascinating to me. As is Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. And Karsavina and her Firebird! Fonteyn’s is wonderful, and I’m devoted to Balanchine’s, with those fabulous Marc Chagall sets. I will have to take a close look at Mythiques Phoenix.
My scarf is pre-owned and so yesterday I saw a few snags on it...I’m not sure if they were there before or did the dry skin on my fingers caused them. Is there something I can do about them? I tried to pull gently in diagonal directions but it’s not helping much since it’s not like they are big pulled loops...should I just leave it and enjoy it? I know nobody else but me knows that they are there...
