Scared to get Louis Vuitton luggage?

Sorry for bumping this old thread but my question is related to the OP and I also would love to hear from people who own LV luggage and travel often.

I'm considering getting a Horizon 50 either in Damier Graphite or Damier Ebene since I like to go on short trips to visit relatives living in another state. I'm also considering the Epi leather option (undecided on color but I might just get black) since I love the Epi line (LV should be given an award for coming up with the Epi leather since it's so durable). I'm definitely staying away from pieces that have vachetta/light colors since traveling whether by car, train, or plane is dusty, dirty, and just overall unpredictable.

How does the luggage hold up if checked in?
How did you get over your initial "fear" of using the luggage for the first time knowing that it's expensive and will get handled roughly?

I don’t own LV luggage personally but a few months ago, while flying AA, at the gate we were asked to check in our carry on luggage, DH had his Damier graphite Keepall B 55 B, while I had my regular no name brand roller case. When we got our luggage after landing, my carry on suitcase came out like all the other luggage the regular way but they’d put the Keepall in a clean bowl/container type thing. It was surprising and we were glad. I don’t know if this is normal practice as we’ve never had to check in our high end bags before. I know this doesn’t fully answer your question but I thought to mention

I have never had to check my bag - but came close to having to check at the gate. Because I have such small jets in my town I have switched to actually just carrying the smallest rolling briefcase. But I got over the luggage thing. It gets beat up just shoving it into bins at the top and rolling through rough areas to get to plane - so for a person who completely babies her purses I had to get over it.

But I guess I can handle jet checking and stuffing it on a plane. Not checking it ahead of time. But it’s going to get worn but I think that’s ok since it’s luggage, right?

I actually want mine to look little worn you know? Means you travel a lot and have used your LV. I remember that when I got a LV Keepall I was embarrassed to carry it to airport because the vachetta wasn’t tan. Making it look brand new - I like the worn look on luggage.

So just know if you get luggage it’s impossible to baby it. It’s not a purse and I had to overcome it and now I am fine.

I have the keepall 55 bandouliere. A word of warning; it is quite heavy when fully packed, to the point that I actually avoid using it. I usually opt for a small rolling carry-on suitcase when traveling through airports. It’s so much easier to navigate without that massive, heavy bag on my shoulder.

Check in luggage is suppose to get bruises. I would not recommend getting large lv luggage unless you fly private. For carry on luggage, as long as you are sitting in business class and fly between large cities, you are fine. If you do regional jets, i would get a keepall and not a horizon so you can avoid gate check and possibly have your luggage handled roughly. Personally I have a horizon I fly with. But if I know I will be flying a regional jet, I will use a carry on from Target.

Thank you for posting your thoughts and experience. I like your mindset about luggage getting that worn and well traveled look; having a pristine looking luggage kinda defeats the purpose of being well traveled when it’s going to be babied.

I might get a rolling luggage that’s pre loved so I won’t have to worry about scratches and dirt. Did your LV luggage protect your belongings despite going through the rigors of travel?

Thank you for your thoughts! What is your experience with the Horizon if you don’t mind giving more details? I’m quite interested in this model. Is it a 55 or a 50? I often fly first class from city to city so I won’t think it would be a problem for me but in that rare occasion that I might need to get it checked in while at the gate... did it handle well even when it was tossed by baggage handlers?

What I’m more concerned is the contents of my luggage and not so much the outside since I like having that well worn and traveled look. Also, I believe that LV designed these luggages to withstand stress and that’s what I’m paying for. The aesthetics is just an added benefit.

I have a Keepall 55 and I have never checked it but I do take it on the train. It gets squashed and bumped in the station and in the overhead storage rack- but it's luggage, not a piece of fine china. It still looks great. By the way, no one ever gives it a second look. I think we LV lovers overestimate the importance of our luggage. To most other travelers, it's just another brown suitcase.

Yes. The LV luggage is very sturdy. Everything was fine. I also have a TUMI luggage I love. But I think all the bumps and scratches are like a badge of honor. Now my purses I would freak out. But the luggage is ok. But small jets I have downsized because it’s like these days there is only room for a small bag! Such small jets! But I have the Horizon 55 and this may verge on too big for small jets. The 50 is close. The 50 is like international size which is better but still may be gate checked. I also lucky to have points to fly first class and get room above the seats special for first and I’m telling you I had a Tumi International size and barely got it in there! Big jets no problem if your lucky to get those on your entire leg of your trip.

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but I read this with interest.

I don't disparage anyone's opinion and totally understand people's concerns, but the whole reason I am here on tPF is because I am a former airline employee. People check their LVs all the time. My supervisor and I loved admiring the nicer bags that came through.

Some of us treated all bags like they are special, because to the owner, ever bag is special--special but not precious. There is the practical reality that bags need to be moved and stacked quickly and efficiently. The bags are meant to protect your belongings, irrespective fo the fact that it, too, is a belonging. So we treated with respect, oohed and ahhed at the LVs that came through, treated them with "luggage" respect.

In those years, I developed a real love of LV. It took decades before I started buying LV.

Great text! I also would love to buy a piece of luggage and have wanted them for a while. I really don't travel much now but there's something in me that wants one! The cost on a few of them aren't that much more than an LV handbag...The protector cover would be a good investment too! The Horizon mono 50 or 55 look so nice!

Question would be 50 or 55?

I have a Keepall 50. The 55 was too big on me and I thought it would get way too heavy. Also, the larger size made it a better candidate to get gate checked. I love my 50!
