Saks Fifth vs. Neiman Marcus What makes you shop where?

I am sure you all already know this, but if you live near a Saks outlet... Off Fifth, all their bags are on sale for Buy One, Get One Half Off... and they have some great Marc Jacobs bags!! I think I am going to get a blue small karolina (I think that is what it was called) and the wallet... it will only be $750!

I think its fun to buy direct from the designer's boutique--like Chanel or LV or Ferragamo--if its possible where you live. You usually get to see the widest selection of merchandise, and the SAs are often quite knowledgeable about the particular line. In my opinion, you also have a better shot at getting a "fresh" bag--right out of the box--as opposed to one that has been on display or (yikes) returned.

As for Neimans vs. Saks, why choose???

Generally I also like hitting the actual boutique when I can. HOwever, that is not always possible. For me the only drawback with Neiman's is that most of them don't accept Visa. The only one I have seen to date that does is the Neiman's in Vegas.

I usually prefer Neiman's over Saks when I am paying cash because I feel that Neiman's offers a better selection in most cases. Saks is okay though and is definitely a spot I like to shop in.

Where I live, Saks has an amazing bag dept. they have Chloe, Prada, Gucci and separate Dior, Chanel and Vuitton boutiques - I usually buy my stuff at Saks, the S.A's are very nice without being snooty - N.M.which is also nearby has a bunch of uppity S.A.'s - I prefer Saks.

I like Saks....I've been to both and felt more comfortable at Saks..NM felt too "stuffy" to me lol I KNOW that's weird! Plus when I shop, I go to Chicago and between Saks, Marshalls, Bloomies & Barneys I think I can get every major brand of shoe, clothing, handbag without going into NM.
Although I have several Amex cards....that limitation would probably prevent me from shopping there on a regular basis.

I don't know why, but I've always preferred Neiman Marcus to Saks, ever since I was a teenager.

But my favorite really is Barneys (but only the Madison Ave location).

Neiman Marcus's reputation is stuffier and "older" than Saks' clientile. But NM is trying to enhance their contemporary departments, especially with Barneys rapidly expanding.

I personally prefer Neiman's only because I've always had really great service. Plus, I like the selection at my local Neimans (DC and VA) a bit better than the Saks in the area. It is annoying that they only take Amex or the NM card, but I can live with it.

Same here. I am not thrilled with either Saks in the area, although the Chevy Chase Saks (NOT their evil LV counter, mind you) has a better selection than the Tysons Saks. But since I rarely make it up to Chevy Chase to shop, my preference is for Neimans.

I also prefer NM to Saks online, for the same reasons others have mentioned, i.e. the NM site is just so much easier to navigate. Now that I can pay my NM card online, it's just about perfect for me. Except for the whole being broke part. LOL

Wanted to add here that I love both NM and Saks in St Louis. Whenever I'm in town visiting family, I always try to spend an afternoon (or whole day!) at Plaza Frontenac, hanging out with my SA buddies at Saks, NM, Coach and LV. I was there just last Sunday and it was wonderful, as always. (le sigh)

I have not set foot in either one of these stores (horrors I know!) but we don't have either of them in Seattle. Nevertheless my NM card gets a BIG workout with online shopping. They always have great service, returns (but not much goes back, ha!). All my Miu Miu, Juicy and Koobas came from NM!

I boycott Neiman Marcus so Saks would win. I hate the fact that you're going into a major store, and they don't take Visa. Then the local store here in Atlanta fired an employee who was trying to help a dog that was locked up in a car. It belonged to one of their big-time customers, so they fired her. Haven't shopped with the jerks since then.

I tend to buy more at NM than Saks...just out of habit and because I get catalogs from NM which is an incentive to go into the stores to look at the items in real life. But I like to go to the freestanding designer boutiques whenever I can for the best selection.

Hands down, Saks in South Florida, Dadeland has the best handbag selection across the board, in all brands. We have great Neiman's down here, but, when it comes to handbags and sales price, this Saks has it all over any in the Miami area.......

Atlanta has a great Saks. They have LV, Chanel, Dior, Prada boutiques and great SA's. The Neimans is good, with great choices too, but the SA's are better at Saks. Being that they basically have the same stuff...I shop where I get the best service!
