Saffiano--what's your general opinion?

Thanks for the heads up on the Gucci materials! 👍Unfortunately, though, now I have more on my list to hunt. 😂
And I completely agree on saffiano. To me, Prada is the only saffiano.

They actually look quite different. Saffiano has a cross hatch pattern whereas epi has a wavy horizontal pattern. They also feel different to me. But they are similar in that both are water resistant, provide more structure than glove / soft leather and come in beautiful bright colors. I'm planning to buy an LV epi bag for my knock around every day bag because of that beauty and durability.
The leathers are made very differently. I looked up the exact process for making LV Epi leather so I didn't go off memory. From a blog "Epi leather is tanned with plant extracts and then dyed. The dyeing process means the leather comes in many vivid colors and is very shiny. The curing process makes the bags water resistant." I didn't read anything about it having a wax (or other coating.)
Hope this helps. 😊👍

thank you for the explanation. that helped me.. now I need to see the epi leather in real life :-) :D

Subjectively and for some strange reason, I can´t stand the harsh touch of saffiano, how it bumps and scuffs against things, or the way it rubs against my tender arm skin if it´s a shoulder-carry piece. It just gives me the willies, and I don´t like the smell of it at all; I can´t help it. However, it doesn´t bother me on other people´s bags, and it looks quite neat on them.

I love Prada saffiano and I intend to buy more bags in the material. The look and the durability cannot be beat. If I want a soft material to love or cuddle I would probably buy a super soft leather coat lol. Love a bag that keeps on looking good!!

What are your thoughts on saffiano leather? I am not typically a fan, but it's become really popular and many designers are using it lately. Is there a reason for that? Demand from consumers? I don't really love the "pattern" on it, and it seems really stiff and often looks (to me) kind of like they're trying to conceal lower quality leather by embossing it.

Is there something I am not getting about this stuff?

It is durable and practical, literally indestructible, sand/waterproof and stain-proof. It doesn't look attractive like soft leather but it is useful. I have about 3 bags that're all-saffiano and I like knowing that I don't have to baby them.

You are correct as far as I am concerned. I just bought a new MK in saffiano leather and it's so stiff and unforgiving that it's going back. It feels like I am carrying around a lumber box on my arm. Afraid I'll get bruised from this "saffiano leather". Now, the color is deep Atlantic and it's a beautiful deep green like I've never seen before. But the stiffness of this bag makes it not worth keeping.

I've never had to baby my nice leather purses. This new saffiano leather bag from MK is so stiff it's like carrying around lumber.

I just pulled out my Prada Saffiano crossbody the other day and it's feels so luxurious and soft. It's definitely a far cry from (as an example) Kate Spade saffiano leather, and other leathers that have been called saffiano. I actually like the look of the texture on my bag, which is small enough to double as a clutch, and as such the texture is not too overwhelming.

I usually prefer softer, less structured leathers but I think there is charm to a beautiful saffiano leather and always enjoy carrying my Prada. It also adds structure to the bag which I quite like.
