How rude!

And since when are the samples been reserved for the people who just wear the specific brand... Isn't the point of giving a sample the chance of a new customer?

Exactly what I thought! There are several products I never would have started using if I hadn't gotten a free sample first.

I always shop at sephora because I hate when SA's at counters try to push products on me that I don't need. Once while visiting family out of town, I was at their local sephora and this girl would not let up!! I got what I needed, went to pay, and then she tried to sell me some lip plumper.. I laughed and said politely I didn't think I needed it. Then she started to tell me about some promotion. I interrupted, thanked her and told her I wasn't interested. She rolled her eyes and then went on to try and sell me some tooth whitener!!! I was getting really annoyed and asked if someone else could ring me up. I prefer online shopping. I never like when people try and help me shop. I never shop aimlessly, I always know what I want. Unless there's something specific I want that I just can't locate on my own, BACK OFF SA's!!!

haha thats hilarious! I never goto macy's, i goto dillards and sephora and i am yet to experience this... The SAs are super nice in both stores. I liked the on SA at clinique when she had mentioned the free sample of the eye cream a few months back and i asked do i really need to use that yet? she said when i turned 20 i should start using it... I am 24 :) )

I hear ya! I just had a bad experience at Clinique in Macy's today. I ended up buying the product, and then returning it for my money back and went to get it from Dillard's. Thought she didn't deserve that comission.

Regarding the sample issue...

In a way, you kind of have to know the background story before you semi-understand MUA's way of thinking. See, all of you ladies actually use samples as a test run before you committ to a full size. However, a lot of people (a surprisingly large amount) just want freebies (without buying anything) and often, they sell it on eBay. Just search "Clinique" or whatever and you'll see these travel sizes and samples sizes being sold. Depending on the product, a lot of these can sell for $5-$25. They also sell them at local swapmeets. In addition, when MUAs have samples that are obviously not suited to someone's skin (e.g. oily skin samples is not suitable for some with super dry skin), some people want samples or free stuff so badly regardless of need that they'll take it anyway. Surprisingly, cosmetic companies do not send a lot of samples to each store. If there are, they'll often for a specific purpose, like an event or a mailer that was sent out or advertised about.

The worst is during Gift with Purchase time. Then we had people who would buy just enough to get the gift and they would buy a bunch and want a gift per item (if it met the minimum). We would give out samples for preselling, so these people would buy like 10 lotions, get 10 gifts and then 30 samples.

Then, they'll go to another store and return ALL 10 LOTIONS! They keep the gifts/samples and resell them.

NOT that I'm supporting being rude to customers who ask for samples...but I wanted to share the other side of the story. I never ever would say that to anyone and I can't imagine anyone who worked at my counter with me saying that either. Oh, and since I don't work in cosmetics anymore, I see what it's really like being a customer now.

but being rude to a consumer is absolutely unnacceptable!!

SA= Sales Assistant. emphasis on Assistant!! as in assist the client!! that lady was not doing that!

And because one sales associate was not doing her job, that means it's ok for her to make a crack about SA's in general and how they don't "make that much money"..uhh
I'm a sales associate and I think her joke was offensive.
Yeah she was insulting the one lady, but it's not like that lady's pay cheque is not comparable to that of other SA's

You took the words right of my mouth. I'm also not supporting being rude, but the facts are the facts. I worked at a counter before and this is what a lot of people do..lol people are crazy

The other day I had to return something to the mall, and remembered that I needed some more eye cream. And I really like one that I had bought from Clinique, All about eyes rich. So I wandered my way into Macy's and up to the Clinique counter and told the SA what I needed. She must have been new b/c she had to ask where it was and how to ring it up yadda yadda. So she tells me, you also can get a free sample, pick out the color, and pointed to a bunch of eye shadows. So I tell her I want the pink one and she goes to grab it. Another older SA looks at her and goes "What are you doing, she doesn't get a free sample just for buying anything, doesn't look like she wears our products anyways."

(lately I have been just so fed up with rude people, and I'm the kind to shy away from confrontation, and I was so mad I let her have it.)
I just so happened to have my coach makeup case in my bag, with which most of everything in there was Clinique.
So I pull it out and say to her, "It's okay, I think I shop here enough and have enough eye shadows already" and dumped my case on the counter.
She looked at me and immediately told the new SA that she was going on lunch break, and high tailed it out of there.

Was I wrong to be so b**chy???? I guess all of the times I just run away and hide whenever someones rude to me added up and I let it out on her....
But it felt good...... lol

That's incredible!! :wtf: How rude of her!

Wow :wtf: I never knew people would do it to that extent!

To emma_puppy:

Hi, you seem to have a lot of experience in this job so I'll ask you: What does one have to do to work at a counter (Macy's/Dillards)? Where or to whom do you need to send your resume? The more information the better.:smile1: Thank you a lot in advance!
