Did Elizabeth change her name? I never knew that they change their names, must find out more!
No she was born Elizabeth of York. The monarch can pick what name name they'll reign under. Queen Elizabeth's father King George VI's given name was Albert. He was known in the family as Bertie. There have only been a handful of British queens. As such, QE2 could only choose from Elizabeth, Victoria and Mary (or maybe one of wives). Actually she could have chosen anything, I guess. But the Brits are known for their devotion to tradition. It's also been rumored that Charles may stay with Charles but Charles I and II were dubious kings. In the end only he know what he'll choose or not.

^ Yes, George VI chose to use a middle name to give a sense of stability and establish continuity with the reign of his father, George V, after the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII (the Duke of Windsor). Supposedly shortly after Queen Elizabeth succeeded she was asked what name she wanted to use and she said "my own, of course." Some people had thought she would use a different one because Queen Elizabeth I is such a towering figure in history.

I think it's nice they chose George. The Queen adored her father and George is also one of Prince Charles's middle names. It's a classic name, a classic Windsor name and of course, George is the patron saint of England.

Newly enthroned King Philippe and family are on vacation in France. The family posed for pictures on an island in southern France today.

They are very matched. If the adults wore a different color I'd like it more. This was they look like the the Partridge Family.

I think Elizabeth could have chosen any name she wanted, whether or not it was one of hers or another queen's. I don't think it's like the papacy where the pope must use his own name or the name of a predecessor.

Purseproblem, Triotrio, lovehgss1 & yellolabkiss:flowers:Thank you all for the information. I think choosing a regal name is so fascinating. Thank you all for explaining it to me!!:flowers:

The Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) was called David, if I remember correctly.

I think George is very traditional but very nice, I'm glad they chose it: as you rightly say he's the Patron Saint of England!

The baby is HRH George Alexander Louis Prince of Cambridge.

Well, I am 21 and I adore normal, "traditional" as you call them, names. What's wrong with Anne, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Charlotte, Mary and Thomas, George, Henry or Jonathan, these days? Does everyone need to be called Tyler, Knox, Isla, Kitty or whatever new "fabulous" name people may invent? I am in no way endorsing Katie Hopkins' views, but are we really going to disapprove of parents that choose to give their children names that have been being used very successfully for centuries now?

Love Baby Prince Cambridge's name. It's my fathers name. Many Greek men have the name George. Perhaps it's a homage to Prince Philips Greek roots ? BTW, my brother is named Phillip!!! Ha

I wonder if they realized that George means farmer? Who knows? Little HRH might be an active environmentalist in the future. Good luck to the little man.and his parents.

I'm not quite sure why you quote my post, because I totally agree with you! My kids are older than you, and all have totally "normal" names! I've no idea who Katie Hopkins is, but I'm sure that she would cringe (like you and me) at the name "North West" which is the name Kanye West has given his daughter!!
