Regretting my tank francaise …what to do?

Hi ladies,

I’ve been thinking for a while about starting this thread. I’m not really sure if there is anything I can do, but I would appreciate any thoughts, advise or support.
About 3 years ago, my lovely in-laws gave me the option of choosing a high- end watch as an engagement present. My parents gave my now-hubby the same present. We all went together, and I have to confess that the various opinions might have influenced my decision. This was definitely a very big purchase, that I don’t see myself repeating in the near future. (I also have a ss rolex perpetual which was a present from my parents when I graduated. Its, been more then 10 yrs since then, I I still love that watch.)
At the time I was between a rolex, date-just two tone, the ballon-bleu or the tank francaise. Although have always leaned towards round, ss watches, I chose a two tone large tank francaise. I was between the medium or the large and I chose the large between I definitely wanted an automatic watch.
I have buyers remorse about the watch. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I always have this doubt that I chose the wrong one. A key doubt is fact that I went with the 2 tone, as I feel that the large tank is more sporty and would look better as ss.

My options now are
1. do nothing. It was a present and it would be rude to change it.
2. Sell it and buy another watch. This is a difficult one. I am afraid of insulting my in laws if they find out and I would probably need to buy a second hand watch. Not sure where to start with that…
3. Buying a ss bracelet from Cartier to put on my watch. I have talked to a Cartier boutique and they would be willing to do that. It wouldn’t be very cheap, but I have been saving for another purchase would be able to do this instead. This way, I still have the two tone bracelet if a chose to go back to it. But, do you think it would be weird that the screw would be gold and the rest of the watch ss? Would it look bad?

Apologies for the long post. I would really appreciate your thoughts.
I think this depends upon your relationship with your husband and your in-laws. If your husband is ok with it, then move on to the in-laws. Know that if they give you lip service to go ahead but are hurt by your actions, that resentment can last a long time. Could you consider wearing their gift watch specifically when you two are going to be with them? Depending upon your relationship and the nature of the in-laws, this issue could become one of those "family things" that takes on a life of its own over the years. This may sound strange, but could you get used to wearing the watch when you are wearing long sleeved tops? It might be less noticeable. You might also mention that you want to keep it in really good condition as you plan to give it your future daughter (their granddaughter) one day.

Hello Ladies, I just discovered this forum and I like it very much.

I have the same watch but the small version. I used to wear it every day for a few years and than I regretted the small size and the two tones. I wanted to change the bracelet in SS but my jeweller said that Cartier has the serialnumbers and that they don't accept a SS bracelet on a twotone watch. So I kept it in the safe for a few years. I bought some beautiful bigger watches, a gold Cartier Roadster, a Rolex datejust and a few others. But now, a few years later, a love the elegant small watch. It's the only watch I have in two tone and now I appreciate it very much. So maybe your taste will change too.

I'm very curious what your decision will be. :-)

Hi! Thanks for sharing!
I haven't decided yet really. I'm leaning towards changing the bracelet, but keeping the two tone, in case my taste changes -and because it was a gift.
I had asked a cartier boutique some time ago, and they had told me that they could sell me just the ss bracelet.

I think you made the right decision, I'd rather keep my ILs happy than anything, after all it's a HUGE deal they bought it for you, what a lovely gift and they should see you wear it.

If you can 'customise' it so much the better, it'll make it even more special.

I' m happy for you that you have the possibility to change the bracelet. I'm living in The Netherlands and that's maybe why I can't change the bracelet. My opinion is that the watch looks gorgeous on your wrist and I wish I could trade mine for your size.

I have the midsize in all stainless. I love yours with the two tone yellow gold! There isn't all that much yg showing, so it is subtle. Anyone who sees it knows it is a more expensive version than the all stainless. I really wouldn't pay for a stainless bracelet and effectively downgrade the value of the watch. It would give you the flexibility to occasionally wear yellow gold jewelry pieces, and I think that would be great!

But to answer your question, I think it would be very risky to sell or trade the watch. If you are really unhappy with it, I think changing the band and saying you want to keep the two tone one in good condition is the best option.

I think that it's more than just a gift, a gift from your in laws ....their gift of acceptance of you into their family. I say bite the bullet, wear it every time the families get together get over it and get another watch. The watch has nothing to do with you, it's about them.

Thinking about this I would leave it as is, I agree with the above, why downgrade the watch-- it's so luxe with the gold- and also I agree with wearing it around the family since you bought it with them. I don't know if it's worth potentially hurting someone's feelings. Buy a different watch and wear this around them and I think it will be more a relief for you so you don't have to worry about feelings
