I have been enjoying bags in various shades of pink/red lately, including both new bags and vintage rehab projects. Here are pics of 3 bags that were "Made in New York City" in the 1980s.

I will show before and after pics of the 3 bags firsts and then post photos of the rehab process.

I had concerns about dunking these bags because of their reddish coloration, but they all needed a bath and so they got a bath! I also had to deal with significant verdigris on the hardware of 2 of the bags.

The first bag is a convertible clutch, here is a B&W catalog photo of the bag that was kindly provided by DemRam. I think that it is kind of big for a clutch, but it's a gorgeous bag!

Thank you to DemRam and Hyacinth for authenticating these bags! Thanks also to the TPFers that frequent the Rehab and Rescue thread for all the advice and encouragement!

Shoulder Sac 9730
Made in NYC, circa 1989
Savers Thrift Store $17.50

This bag was pretty clean and it in good shape; but it had some soiled areas and although you can't see it in the pictures - it had some soiled areas and significant water stains on the bottom and on one side of the bag.

Here are the before pics, I will post the after photos next.

Small Shoulder Bag 9530 (Burdandy? Eggplant?)
Made in NYC; circa mid-1980s
Salvation Army $12.50

I thought that this bag was burgandy or maroon when I bought it, but after I gave it a bath and conditioner it turned a deep purple or eggplant. I am not sure of the original color but it is a very pretty color now! Here are the before pics.

I love the color and style of the eggplant bag but in retrospect I probably should have left it behind at the thrift store. I originally saw it at the SA for $25 and I passed but when I found it for 50% off a few weeks later I decided to buy it.

The leather was really dried out and the straps have a fine network of cracks and the piping is cracked in a few places. I have stablilized the damage for awhile, but it is beyond my skill to fix the damage.

Here are some pics of the damaged areas.

When I bought the burgandy convertible clutch I knew that the hardware had significant buildup of verdigris. I could see the green gunk around and on the brass and there was even a furry green penny inside the bag!

I didn't realize that the eggplant shoulder bag also had serious verdigris problems. DemRam has said that she always removes the turnlock hardware when doing a rehab but that has not been my usual practice.

When I was removing the hardware from the burgandy clutch I noticed a "dark line" around the base of the turnlock of the small shoulder bag. I decided to remove the hardware on that bag too and I couldn't believe my eyes! The inside hardware of both bags was covered with nasty green crud!

Here are pics of the verdigris damage and of the hardware soaking in vinegar water. It is very simple to remove and replace turnlocks and taking them off makes it easy to clean both the hardware and the leather.
