I'm unable to start a new thread with my question, so I'm going to try and tag onto this post :) I'm wondering about the following diamond:

2.0 carats, G, VS2
Depth 59.6%
Table 60%
Crown Height 13.3%
Crown Angle 33.7%
Pavilion Depth 43.2%
Pavilion Angle 41.0
Girdle Thickness-Thin to Med

HCA 1.8

This is a Tiffany diamond and I've read that their diamonds tend to be cut deep. On paper, I thought this diamond looked pretty good due to it's smaller depth percentage. My husband is insistent on Tiffany, so I have to work with what they have. I hope to see it in person on Friday.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated :)

The depth isn't the problem, the table and the crown angle/pavilion angle combo is. Keep looking. Find my post near the end of the reference thread for the numbers you wanna look for. The depth on this is actually great, if the table was 55% where it should be.

Thanks, Ame. I think this one better matches your recommendations.

1.90 carats, H, VS1, faint fluorescence
Depth 61.8%
Table 56%
Crown height 15.7%
Crown angle 35.5
Pavilion depth 42.8%
Pavilion angle 40.7
Girdle thickness-medium
HCA 1.9

Neither of them really cut or source their own stones outside of their proprietary stuff. Tiffany has purchased mines and can do their own melee, but for their larger stones, they still mostly only cut their specialty cuts. Their rounds are predominantly from outside sources still. Both are working in that direction to control what they sell, but most of their round stones are sourced from the same general sources as any other retailer. They select stones mostly based on a strange set of criteria, and I guess "eyeball" it as to what they think is acceptable.

Doing some additional research, also took this diamond home and it's no more brilliant than the EGL Int'l stone currently mounted.

What's the deal? Why is it even called Excellent cut if HCA says it's only good?

If GIA is supposed to be the most reliable cert, what is so good about EX/EX/EX

It's not brilliant.....

So... how did the story end? Are you engaged? Did you find a diamond you both love?

I hope the OP got her refund. Then seems like a break from looking at diamonds would be helpful. I generally make better decisions after a cooling off period, especially if a decision has been complicated and stressful.

Thanks guys! I am happy to say, YES! I am engaged!

Sorry for the delay in update, I wanted to get it all mounted up and everything so that I could share some photos. I picked it up yesterday!

With the help of the AMAZING. Ame, I got a 1.20 VS2 I color AGS 0 Ideal cut diamond from Brian Gavin Diamonds. It's part of the Brian Gavin Blue collection and has VERY STRONG BLUE FLUORESCENCE... I was terrified of the fluorescence, but is it ever a wicked trait to have in a diamond! SO BEAUTIFUL.

I am at University today and I forgot to charge my laptop. I will plug it in during my break and upload some super cool photos of my ring =)

My DF LOVES the blue fluorescence. He thinks it's so cool, which I'm glad because I wanted him to love the diamond as well. He said the cut looks like "how a diamond looks in the movies". I am so grateful that we tried the online shopping experience, I just wouldn't have gotten something this beautiful here.

Thank you all <3
