Price Increase 2/1?

The more I hear about these crazy price increases the more I feel I am done with certain items.
I don't think I am going to buy anymore pocket squares and no more leather jewelry. And I really mean it.

I agree with everything you posted, but didn't want to quote the whole post. I selected this portion, because I completely agree with both sentiments. To add my own comments, here goes:

***caffeine induced rant on***

Pocket squares were the ONE thing that DH and I both viewed as a sort of fall back item. Not to trivialize them, but let's face it, they were a LOT cheaper than the 90cm scarves. Even with changes in our income the past 4 years, we could still pick up the occasional pocket square, scarf ring or Twilly. NO MORE. I'm sick of being screwed by luxury design houses.

Hermès isn't the only one doing this. The LV Suhali Lockit that I bought barely 6 months ago for $2640 was increased to $3100 on Monday!!! They also raised the prices on their already obscenely overpriced sunglasses. I'm done there, too.

All I can say is THANK GOD for the secondary market. At least those among us that truly appreciate Hermès items for their quality and historical value can still find them at reasonable prices. It takes some work, but at this point, I'd rather give my money to a consignment shop or reseller than to Hermès. I even told my SA this very thing yesterday. As I said to him: When I can buy THREE 90cm scarves on the secondary market for what ONE new 90cm costs, there's no contest.

In the end, just because a person has a limited income shouldn't mean they should be prohibited from owning beautiful things when you have a sincere appreciation for their craftsmanship.

Just because someone is filthy rich and CAN buy expensive things doesn't mean they appreciate the craftsmanship. Like you, trama turgo these are the people I truly resent...

PP~Agree as well, but not sure trama "resents" those newly rich, or at least that is how I read her post, and in a way that is how I feel, too, no resentment, just bemusement. We are just standing aside while the mad rush of the newly wealthy stampede to buy luxury goods. And the luxury houses raise prices IMO for two reasons~to make money, of course, they see they can raise prices and these newly weathly will buy because they can, and they have a huge pent up demand for these goods. The second reason is maintain exclusivity~if anyone can buy luxury then some of the luster is gone~
How can Hermes be highest end if the Chanel bags are reaching into the same price points? It is like a price war here, but on the high end of the spectrum. A Catch 22.
In Germany, the established people lament that they can no longer buy luxury goods on the K'Damm because they are all bought up by a new wealthy class that has settled there, and the prices go up and up, but this group keeps buying. Nothing left for anyone else.
I will probably still buy, but I will buy less, will buy some on secondary market and be more thoughtful about what I buy from Hermes. More importantly, will value what I already have~

Beautifully said, everyone.

I intend to buy less, buy more carefully, enjoy profoundly the secondary market. Oh yes, and keep risking life and limb at the sales, for the pure joy of it.

trama
That is an amazing post.
You are so correct and I understand what you are saying on every level.
Am struggling myself with how to move forward with a brand I love and heretofore could identify with. Not sure anymore.
Thank you for giving us all some excellent datapoints.
Really appreciate your insight~~

Thank you very much TT, I really appreciate that:smile1:

Oh yes, I have no resentment, just bemusement.
I had a quite international upbringing, and I am proud to have friends of all religions, colours and social positions, let alone political views!

You also nailed a very good point when you talked about the price war. What you said about Chanel and Hermès and the price point is oh so true!

Poor wording on my part in my earlier post. Let me try again. ;)

The resentment comes in with regard to so many "newly rich" not having the level of appreciation for Hermès craftsmanship and history that people with a longstanding love of the line have. It has nothing to do with resenting the fact that they are rich.

Too many "Nouveau Riche" (celebrities being my personal pet peeve) buy up luxury goods purely and simply for show, bragging rights and because they can. That makes me insane as someone who adores the brand for non-superficial reasons.
