prescription skin care suggestions

I've decided to go in to my local medi-spa and get some Latisse for my eyelashes. I also want to talk to them about some prescription skin care. I will be 38 years-old next month and my skin is aging (probably because of my years in the sun - although I use sunscreen religiously now). My main concerns are fine lines around the mouth and eyes, sun spots/hyper-pigmentation, and wrinkles in my forehead/brow line. The worst of it is definitely the furrows in my brow and I doubt a prescription skin care is going to be as effective as something like Botox for that particular area, but I'd rather just stick to skin care. Does anyone have any suggestions for prescription skin care? Maybe retinol? Thanks!

Retinol is great! I used it combined with Skinceuticals Phyto+ Corrective gel for dark spots (based on my doctors recommendations).

Just be sure to use proper sunscreen otherwise all your work and money spent will be a waste.

^Thanks to both of you. My DH actually just started using Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel. I sent him to my skin care lady at the medi-spa and that's what she recommended for him. At one point, she gave me a prescription for Obagi C-RX and I liked it, but it just wasn't enough, which is why I'm thinking about Retinol. Also, sunscreen is a "must" for me these days. I just wish that I had felt that way when I was younger!

retin-a!!!

I was confused about the difference between retinol and retin-A, so I looked it up. It sounds like retin-a may be a bit more effective from an absorption point of view. I'll ask my skin-care lady.
The one thing that bothers me the most about my skin is those tiny lines that I'm starting to get around my top lip. I was never a smoker, so I suppose it's just natural aging & sun damage. Nothing screams, "I'm getting old!" more than mouth wrinkles...

Retin-a has been FDA approved for helping to lessen acne, age spots, fine lines/wrinkles, and improving skin tone and texture. It's available in a number of different formulations--i.e. cream or gel such as Renova, Retin-a Micro, Retin-a; as well as varying strengths. There's tons of information available online.

My dermatologist gave me some tretinoin to be part of my Obagi skin care. At first, I used the tretinoin everyday then my skin became so ugly (peeling) on the first week but after all the peeling, I was so happy with the result. I just used tretinoin once in a while if I wanted to do some peeling. You can use retinol as daily maintenance coz it's a little mild and works great too.

Have you considered a light chemical peel? I am going to have one done later this month. I also had the brow furrows between my eyebrows and had a little botox and it has worked great!!! I have a friend that uses Obabji for some skin discolorations and she looks amazing now and a month or so.

^I would consider a peel. I'm just not sure that I want to do anything more invasive at this point and I consider botox to be a bit more invasive (although not as invasive as surgery). A good friend of mine is 40 and she told me about her botox secret. Her skin looks amazing and it really got me thinking. I just don't think I want to start that "regimen" just yet. I'll be 38 years-old next month and that's a lot of botox or the rest of my life if I started now. I've used Obagi too and loved it, but I think I need something more.

I actually think a peel or microdermabrasion (light) would be a great kickstart.

^^I agree . A very light chemical peel followed by microdermabrasion.

I know what you mean about the botox. I just did it and I will be 51 next month (eek!!!). My forehead looks 100% better and even got a little bit of brow lift from it and I only received 30 units, which to my understanding is pretty light. I don't have the wrinkles so much as an uneven skin tone, hence the peel. I'm glad you posted, becasue it's been my reminder to get my appt made. A peel and botox are my choice because they less invasive. Talk to your skin care specialist and see what they recommend. Good luck!!!

Anything with rx strength retinol will really do the trick for texture issues. A popular product now is Tri-Luma, which combines a strong retinol, hydroquinone (an effective lightening agent) and a mild steroid (to calm irritation from the other two active ingredients). It's also pretty expensive. I use generic 4% hydroquinone, followed by the 0.1% retinol, on my face, and use the retinol on neck, chest, and hands as well. Now granted, I also get Botox now in the forehead, but at 33 my skin looks light years better than it did when I was 28 (when I started all this).
