Small-to-medium. I enjoy walking, and a big, heavy bag is no fun to lug around. It has to be big enough to carry a wallet, sunglasses and umbrella (if you only take one you always need the other), small cosmetics pouch, keys, phone, and my kindle or a book. However, when I do have to carry a lot, I prefer one big bag to 2 or 3 smaller bags. Multiple bags look very messy to me.

As with many things, I think the extremes are to be avoided. Most tiny bags and most huge bags look silly to me. The best-looking bags are somewhere in between, functional and proportionate.

I'm quite petite, so my biggest bag is still just a medium size. All the bags that I bought after having a kid are small or mini sizes. It's easier and more practical for me to be hands-free when bringing a young kid out.

I love medium bags because they fit what I want to carry: wallet, iPhone, sunglasses, small makeup/lotion bag, accessories case with a little room to spare.

And as for this guy...

i heard two quotes many years ago (one from a man) who said he judged women to date based on the size of their handbag. a big bag = low self-esteem and/or high maintenance b/c she needs an arsenal of stuff to feel good about herself
he probably doesn't want me judging his sorry self by the size of something he carries...
I mean really. What an idiot.

I'm overwhelmed by all the responses! Thank you so so much! You all have really been insightful and helped my research! I had no idea this would be such a debate. Keep the responses coming! Really appreciate it!

I prefer small bags...always have ever since my college years. My necessities are phone, six-ring key holder, card case (holds id, debit, gas card, credit card), key pouch (used for customer rewards cards), and whatever lipstick I am wearing that day. As long as my bag fits these items then I am happy. No point in a big bag as I would use only a fraction of the space. I do have a couple bigger bags (Alexander Wang Rockie, and Balenciaga Slim Hobo for carrying laptop, etc) that I use on certain occasions when I do need to carry a bit more but honestly they don't see much use. I have a couple really big bags for travel but they are strictly that...travel bags. My mother is the one who turned me off big bags. Growing up, she always carried huge bags and could NEVER find anything. She wasted so much time digging through her bags and she carried so much junk that she never really needed. So she is responsible for my dislike of carrying larger bags

I'm with you on this. I think the biggest I go would be a medium in most cases. I mean certainly all bags have their own place. I'm sure there are days you definitely need something big. Like packing for a day plus travel or something. But seriously! I think my things will get lost if I use big bags on a daily basis.

Small and medium. I have tried to wear big bags and I am not able to they just over power me. It looks as though the bag is wearing me. So after some costly mistakes I have learned my lesson and buy medium and small bags. Fortunately the bag maker I get most of my bags from in Italy normally makes a large and midi bag in the same style. Which means I get the style at want at the right size for me. Also all the bags are bespoke and hand made so I am able to make changes to my liking which I love. The brand is Massaccesi and I must say once you have bought a handmade Italian leather handbag it is hard to buy anything else.
Yes that's what I wrote about on my blog as well. It seems size is a big issue. Everything has to be proportionate. For petite ladies, I think anything over a medium would be disproportionate. But in the win win situation, even for taller ladies, I think small bags have it's place being more elegant and easy on the body.

only small/mini, has always been that way since my teens. 1) i just don't need to feel prepared every second. why carry nonsense and weigh myself down, no need to be mcgyver and have something for every 'what if.' 2) small bags take up less room everywhere you go and just weigh less on the shoulder/arm 3) i heard two quotes many years ago (one from a man) who said he judged women to date based on the size of their handbag. a big bag = low self-esteem and/or high maintenance b/c she needs an arsenal of stuff to feel good about herself. the other quote from Judith Leiber who said that there is no need for a woman to carry their life in their bag, which is why she designed small bags for women. 4) mother's influence, she never carried large bags and i guess i followed her example and instruction somehow
The story is quite interesting. I can't believe his comment though. Ignorant to judge... the quote by Judith Leiber is very interesting. Thanks for bringing it up. If you have more information on it, feel free to share. It seems quite insightful and will be interesting for me to write about on my blog and bring it up as a topic of debate as well. :)

I can't make a choice as a preference as they all have a different purposes.
Small - when I only need the basics, an evening out or travelling light I.e. Walking, maybe on a city break or just a stroll along the Seafront or literally popping to the shop. I don't do mini or micro, way too small for me to get one useful item in.
Medium - as a "day bag" when it's full of what to me are essentials that I'd need in the course of the day. Work can involve meetings with clients that will require a laptop, files etc. I need a bottle if water & maybe carry my lunch. These will be my most carried bags.
Large - I only own what I'd call one really large bag and that's a GM LV Neverfull which I use for travelling, flight bag, weekend away & also doubles up on holiday as a beach bag. Plenty of room fir towels, creams, water etc

Did this man ever see a woman wallop some carpark creepy with her mulb bayswater double zip tote?
Wait...guess he'd need to be following me around...

The perfect reply as ever my dear Remainsilly  .......and I only consider the beautiful Zipped Bays a medium, I'm sure there's something larger we could find to floor him with.

I can't imagine what a larger bag has to do with self esteem. He obviously doesn't understand women in the slightest and I'd guess has never managed to hold down a relationship for very long. I think he's confusing it with men with large cars :wtf: The implication is women are brainless, what about the need to carry a laptop for work & meetings, files or notes, all the bits and pieces that are required for your children or baby, or maybe we just like to be organised. Nether do I consider that I carry any of my life with me, just what I need in the course of my day. Maybe the woman that said this didn't have much going on in her life. It's also far easier to rummage about in a larger bag and find what you want.

When I carry a medium or large bag there is very little in it that is to do with how I look other than lipstick/, hand cream & possibly a small comb. I'd never travel anywhere without lippy as my lips get dry, same goes for a small hand cream as I can't bear the feel of my hands being dry & a bottle of water is a necessity. I always carry sunglasses as I'm photophobic, I prefer large purses/wallets so cards/money is all in one place, I don't get on with smaller ones at all and sold them all. I always carry cash & plenty of coins, DH being a man, never seems to carry cash & always raids my purse on the numerous occasions he needs cash. On an evening out he also always seems to have a pile of totally unnecessary keys that he'd like to fit into my bag. Whereas I have a door key attached to a chain on a pouch in my bag.

There was also a time when I needed to carry reading glasses or I wouldn't be able to see. After years of perfect vision it comes as a shock but glad to say laser surgery has been very successful. So now several less things to carry as multiple glasses were required according to what I needed to read or see!

I've better things to do than judge someone on what size bag they carry. I'm sure the quoted comments will raise plenty of eyebrows & promote many reactions. Lol as if we could possibly be so stereotype, I certainly don't care what someone would think about the size bag I carry. It depends on lifestyle, type of job, children etc and of course personal preference. I may admire a bag someone is carrying at times but size doesn't matter :giggle: I do often wonder how some women can get everything they need into a mini or micro bag.
