I read about this recently, so I've been trying to be conscious about what I buy and wear/wash. It is difficult to find clothes nowadays that don't have synthetics. Even mid-range brands have clothes for $1000 with polyester blends. Even when I'm thrifting, many of the cute vintage clothes are polyester. It's so sad. I'm trying to replace all of my polyester clothes with natural fibers (and I've amassed a nice collection over the years, although it's not perfect yet), but I agree with that article. It's not always easy for every consumer to be able to dedicate themselves to this, and obviously the best answer is to consume less.

There’s a thread in reddit female fashion discussing this issue as well. Someone mentioned the Cora Ball as a way to catch the loose fibers in the wash for synthetics. Has anyone heard/tried it? I have an old large top load washer. I love the size and it came with the house when we purchased it so I’m not inclined to replace it until it breaks but am considering the Cora ball ...

had never heard of it but i'm intrigued! honestly, i've never thought about the environmental impact from washing synthetics. will definitely make me think twice when purchasing items now.

So many clothes are now made with plastic. They can also exasperate skin conditions, such eczema. But the getting into the food chain via micro plastics is real anathema. Basically I avoid anything with Polyester, Acrylic, Acetate, Triacetate, Nylon even Lycra.

I love the idea of this thread thanks for starting it. I’m always looking at the fabric content of my clothing when shopping. Glad to know I’m not the only one doing it lol.

Hi Pixiejenna! Please share the brands that you have been pleased with. I am always on the look out for new ones to discover or rediscover [emoji6]

I don't really have any specific brands to be honest. I generally dress pretty casual. I do like be love and synergy for tees, tanks, and sweatshirts. Llbean for sweaters and flannels. I'm in the process of upgrading my clothes I just bought a great sweater by theory. I'm hoping to add one or two cashmere sweaters this year. I don't want to spend a million dollars on them but I want them to be good quality. I'm a bit afraid of washing them and ruining them. And eliminating all the stuff I don't wear anymore. I was wearing a bunch of nordie house brands for basic tees but the quality has gone down.

I do the same! I have been for over 20 years, ever since I saw a news report about how fast synthetic clothing burns during home fires and the enviornmental impact. That really scared me. Really impacted my choices not only with clothing, but home furnishings, too. I saw something a few years ago about how fast a home burns now (twice as fast) compared to 30 years ago. Also, home fires are much hotter now because of all the petroleum based items in the home now.

Petroleum based fabrics also create unhealthy environments and cause skin irritation. Excema in particular can became super inflamed.

I was reading that in the Uk they will ban the use of plastic straws and plastic ear buds within a year. The EU has also banned the use of microplastics in cosmetics, (they used to be in all the exfoliating scrubs and even in some serums) the best thing to do is simply not buy any clothes with plastic. Sequins, nylon, polyester are now banned from my wardrobe. ( though I still have elastane and some Lycra for swim suits)
