People who know watches don't buy Relex

Like many of you have said, there is always going to be a more expensive, more "exclusive" limited production, creme of the crop watch out there... In the real world, I think most people would agree that a Rolex is pretty amazing watch and is highly enviable and few people in the real world are able to afford such an expensive watch, never mind a rare limited production time piece that is compareable to the cost of a car or even a house!. While they may produce more of them then other watch makers it is arguable that this is do to the world wide demand. There is no other watch maker that has quite the same brand recognition as Rolex. Besides, you should wear what you love and makes you happy, not just because some book says its the best, or not the best watch...

I think you should wear what you love, but I do agree with the comment. I wear a Rolex and love it, but my mother is a watch-guru person and rarely wears Rolex anymore. She prefers more obscure brands like Patek, Panerai, etc... that are really only known by people who are into watches. The problem with Rolex is that it is the most "mainstream" of the high end watches.

lol, i'm sorry, but you made a very misfortunate spelling mistake in your title, I was thinking this thread was about very bad fakes, like the PRADO bags from Sex & the City...

I don't know much about Rolexes, only that i'll probably never afford one...

That is the first thing I noticed too :shame:. DH has a rolex and he loves it and so do I. Get it if you can afford it.

Hahahaha !!!! I meant to say a hundred and seventy thousand plus!!! I'm not a lunatic, honest just very rubbish at math!!!!xxxx
But all the ladies who have posted have got the handle on Rolex and its place in the market amongst all the other brands, sure I would LOVE a really rare watch and would'nt give a rats ass if no-one recognised it,but I just don't have that sort of money at my disposal,I have seen and held some fabulously rare and expensive watches in my time in the trade, but thats as close as I will ever get!! So I went for build quality, looks and a good price range for me and Rolex came out on top of all the other brands in a similar price band and ongoing maintenace and repair costs, along with recommendations from trained watchmakers and made my choice, and now much further down the line I own two,and my husband has one as well!!!

Get what YOU want. This "watch connoisseur" is not a normal person like the rest of us. Don't let comments like that sway you.

People say the J12 is trendy, that the ceramic isn't timeless, whatever. I got it, and for the money I paid for it I could have gotten a Cartier or Rolex. I bought what I wanted to buy because I wanted it.

What's right for you might not be right for another person, and vice versa.

Well said!!! Its all about what floats your boat!!!!

A person has to realize that there is always something better. It almost doesn't matter what you pay for something because there will always be something that is MORE expensive, MORE exclusive or harder to get. I guess it depends how just how much you want to play that game. Do you want to get the piece that is right for you, that you love? Or do you want to seek out something you had not considered before to impress people you've never met?

Absolutely!

Yep,this lady says it best imo!!!!

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for in a watch. I agree with Conrad Ng's sentiment and Rolex don't appeal to me at all, I certainly wouldn't pay for one (I wear a JLC which I chose because it's well-priced, not mass-produced and not instantly recognisible by general public. Oh and it makes me smile every time I look at it) BUT, ultimately, if it makes you happy then that's what you should wear.

It sounds like part of the reason you are buying it is for business reasons, so its probably good to get recognizable luxury, like wearing a Hermes tie or a scarf. If you like the style and you think it will boost your confidence, go for it. It depends on the business circles that you're in, but I would think a Rolex or Cartier would work well for most. Of course my last purchase was a very overpriced (for an automatic watch) Hermes Medor - but I luuuuve it!

Thank you all for your opinions. And I'm sorry if this thread offended any of you. I didn't have any intention to do so. I'd honestly love to hear from people who have bought, owned and worn Rolex since I didn't own one and would like to know about it before buying one.

A couple of my friends have owned and worn Rolex for a decade, but I had no desire to own one until last month when I tried a Lady's datejust rose gold18k black dial with diamond marker on at the jewelry store in my neighborhood and I was stunned that how gorgeous it looked on my wrist. It's like Cinderella wears her glass slippers. It's like a spell! So, I just tried to learn about Rolex as much as I can before investing in one:smile1:.
By the way, Chanel-girl-Your Rolex watch really induced my Rolex appetite once more.

No offence taken!!! I hope you get your hearts desire,Rolex or whatever and you love it!! I have sold lots of Rolex to people who said they did'nt like them!! Its just that initial getting one on..............then the love affair starts!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you are quite right to check it out, thats very sensible, loads of people shy away from the brand because they are so well known, chunky, garish, vulgar etc,etc,etc...........................until they try one on and feel the quality actually see irl what its like on etc and they change their mind a good 95% of the time!!! So enjoy your shopping and please report back with pics!!!!XX
