Pearl Education (Warning: Somewhat of a Rant)

I am new here, only browsed today because some bloke sent me a link to the above-mentioned post. I cannot comment on most of the posts on this forum, but I have personal experience with Fiji Pearls.

Pearls Fiji is owned by a man, a Mr. Justin Hunter. I've had the pleasure to report on his operation twice. Comparing his pearls to Tahitians is not an apples to apples comparison. His are a special breed, literally. He breeds his hatchery stock to accentuate the rare orange mantle not found in traditional, indigenous French Polynesian stock. His operation is quite small and very exclusive. His prices reflect that. A fine pair of comparable Tahitian pearls can be found for about a tenth of what his company would be willing to part with them for.

so then in your opinion, justin's pearls are so completely different that they warrant that higher pricing? I am going to call my friend and go have a look at some of her pearls this week. I knew justin's pearls were mostly multicolored but i didn't realize that they were cultured completely differently. I thought their pearl farm was like all the others except smaller. Now I'm excited.

Eliza, These are freshwater cultured pearls. The shape is determined by the shape of mantle tissue inserted during nucleation to encourage (or rather irritate) the oyster to coat it with nacre. Because the mantle tissue is easy to cut in a variety of shapes, there is often a lot of interesting experimentation in the freshwater industry with shape.
The price on that for TPFers would be $50 shipped.

Thanks so much for answering! :D

I just placed the order for the necklace and added a note in the comment section for you. It is a really fun necklace.

I'm not a jeweler or an appraiser, kashmira, so "good" or not is beyond my skills. When I looked at them, I was not happy with them. The Freshadamas were far better in immediate visual impression than the AAA quality freshwaters, but I was not happy. I was def. pleased that PP refunded so quickly and easily though.

Thank you:flowers:

Wow, alot of exchanges within such a short period. I must say I have just learnt more stuffz!

As for me, I was and still am happy to have learnt abt TPO, PP, FF, and more online sites selling pearls. I have thus far only received my rope 6-7mm FWP from TPO which I totally loved since it came at such an attractively low pricepoint for me. I wear this rope with almost anything. And as in my other posts, I am waiting for my other purchases to come before I can comment further on the quality, whether there's consistency or not.

As the Chinese saying goes, you pay a penny, you get a penny's worth! What's most impt is for you to feel that your penny was well spent.

I own some SSPs which I bought from my local jeweller who brought them in from Japan as well as Australia. They are of superb quality and very round in shape.

In summary, I will buy midrange pearls online as I feel the risk is lower, & higher end ones direct from my jeweller as I want to be very sure of the quality, how the pearls look on me as well as to save the hassle of shipping, returning and any potential loss.:smile1:

geminisparklers, thanks for this, ITA!

Pearls, like diamonds, are very subjective. Some people will only go for top end, others for mid range etc. I like variety for daily wear, and classics for special events...to each its own :smile1:

I love this thread, as it has taught me so much about pearls

I think the pearls warrant a different category. They are not Tahitian pearls they are Fijian pearls. So from a strictly price perspective, they cannot be compared. The colors are very different, and those grown by Justin (but not the smaller Fijian farms) are larger.

Just to share my tiny collection of SSP jewellery and my FWPs...:p

The 10mms are a pair of dangle earrings with 5 diamonds leading down to each pearl, the 12.6mm is a ring, the 13.2mm is a pendant with diamonds and the last baroque is a 18mm ring. All were customised.

The 2nd pic shows 3 different strands of my FWPs which I bought from some local beading shops and knotted as well as beaded together.

The 3rd pic shows my new 100" rope from TPO.

And the rest are closeups of my SSP jewellery...
