Paying a high price for items made in China

Haha! Love that analogy! Great image, there, and totally accurate!
I kind of agree with what people are saying about looking at the item, not fixating on where its made, but I'm also horrified by these things that come out every now and then. (Dog fur? Yikes.)

And there has to be a pretty much universal poor treatment of workers if its THAT much cheaper to actually ship nice materials somewhere else to have them made rather than pay your own country's fair wages. I hate that!

You're right Snowlikehoney.....
It's all about profit.
The brands think that their name is enough to make people buy their products....But customers are not dumb. Money is scarce....and you'll see that in a very near future lots of consumers will refuse to pay high prices for something made by a worker paid $200 a month.....

Can you believe it SweetFire, I was so upset that I couldn't sleep at night...
They also talked about the famous LV factories in France......We know that LV has factories in Spain too and LV doesn't mind talking about it....but...they also have a big one in Rumania... which represents 10% of the making...and of course....the brand doesn't want to answer the journalists' questions on that particular subject....
As for Chanel, the bags are made in Italy in factories that work for other brands....Unknown to Chanel, an Italian maker....subcontracted the job to a clandestine workshop where an employee told the French journalist that he received the leather and then got 45 euros for the making of a bag ....
Chanel answered that they are going to investigate....
Pretty depressing!

you're kidding?! 45 euro?!! that is disgusting!!! chanel charges SO much for their products

Maybe you should take it into consideration. We don't know what we're really buying.

Here's just one example -- Anyone remember the outrage at discovering coats made in China did not have "faux fur” but were made from dog fur? Clothing we could easily purchase at Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Nordies. Labels such as Sean John, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

Everyone said they had no idea-- well if the retailers and manufacturers had no idea, who does? :shrugs:

Edited to add- don't forget all those children's toys coated with lead paint.... made at a factory in China. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/19/business/worldbusiness/19toys.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0)

Everything is made in China though, don't know how we can get around it.

I don't know about you but I'm pretty good at telling fur from faux and what little I do have (minx fur ball) I've made peace with, I also have a fake fur (cotton blend) lined sweater that I washed and dried once out of laziness rather then separating it from my usual clothing and air dry, that went very wrong

I try to limit myself on buying plastics, my to go food containers are glass and I use glass jars and water bottle

I do my research esp with technology but regardless of where it's made I judge the quality of, for those who can't see a difference (I'm one of those rare annoying nitpicking types) then the labels are helpful and research is a must but my whole point is

Not to judge based on the label alone.

Ask a Chinese lady if she is ready to buy a made in China Longchamp.....for example....

All those prestigious brands that have decided to cut costs....are sawing the branch on which they are sitting...

Hey Maria ,
Thanks for stopping by, it must the European thing, I mean I am Asian but clearly... If I buy in Paris I want products made in France.
I bought gifts for my family in Korea and got rude look from the salesgirl at longchamps for requesting solely made in France leather.
My line was I don't mind paying money but it has to be made in a line of conduct I find 'acceptable'.
I am a real lover of French made products and thing they have invented luxury.
You live in Paris like I do, so I guess you know where I'm coming from.
The French bag designer Jerome Dreyfuss (husband of Isabel m), said that Chinese manufacturer come to Europe to buy the best leather they usually don't care about the price tag and even make it more expensive by their way of not caring about the number of 00000s to be written on the check.
That they buy and bring it back to Asia and get it manufactured by cheap workforce.
That its easier to handle things this way.
He struggles a bit ...
I admire his force and knowledge.
I think the money I had decided to spend on Chanel will be spend on a brand new Dreyfuss handbag and a vintage chanel.

I love Jerôme Dreyfuss bags, Hanae!:smile1:
And I totally agree with everything you said here and on the Chanel forum!:tup:

That's cost effective for sure, not caring about the 0's on a check written because its the "finest material", being Chinese and having dealt with them all my life I find it hard to believe that they didn't bargain or try to haggle on the price--

And would pay their workers penny on the dollar, while spending mindlessly on the material.

As good as the Chinese are at constructing when you're paid a few dollars your quality of work will show that, versus someone whose paid handsomely for his/her time in constructing the goods..unless you have a complete noob making the product being paid $xx per hour; and someone whose eyes and hands are good $.xx a hour

But seriously, Chinese not bargaining for material?!

ESP when I'm pretty sure that the Chinese are given a quota they have to meet per hour while those who are paid more and more time to construct; has quotas to meet per week, sometimes per month

It's quite sad to hear people really not caring about what they paid. I thin a product needs to please in more than just one way.
Such as it was not made by people who are underpaid/treated badly/atrocious working hours but by happy, extremely passionate craftsmen and women.
I don't know very well the Chinese mindset so ill leave it to you.
Lets hope this changes and becomes better.
Such as keeping the best craftsmen/women whether they are Italians/French and or Chinese but paying them decent wages, giving them decent workplace and most of all having passionate people putting their all into it
Far from what we have at the moment.
